AIMPLB urges political parties to address Justice Shekhar Yadav's controversial remarks

New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has formally appealed to major political parties to take appropriate action regarding remarks made by Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court during a speech delivered on December 8, 2024, within court premises.
In its representation, the AIMPLB conveyed deep concern over the lack of response to what it described as a troubling deviation from constitutional values. The letter, authored by AIMPLB General Secretary Maulana Mohammed Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, condemned the speech for allegedly reflecting a sectarian viewpoint under the guise of constitutional interpretation.
'The Learned Judge,' the Board stated, 'appears to have disregarded the constitutional stature of his office and spoken from a perspective shaped by personal beliefs rather than the inclusive spirit of India's secular principles. Such remarks challenge the neutrality expected from the judiciary and threaten the Rule of Law.'
The Board underscored that religious freedom and cultural practices -- particularly within the domain of personal laws -- are safeguarded by the Constitution and must be protected in a nation as diverse as India. It cautioned that silence in the face of such incidents could set a dangerous precedent.
Six months after the speech, the Board voiced disappointment with the political leadership's failure to respond. It urged all parties to reinforce the constitutional ethos and ensure that members of the judiciary maintain impartiality and refrain from expressing partisan positions.
The letter concluded with a strong call to action: 'It is imperative that the political class initiates appropriate constitutional steps to uphold judicial neutrality and safeguard the secular character of the nation.' (ANI)

A software engineer, accused of raping a woman on a false pretext of marriage, has moved the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Rajasthan High Court which directed his wife to be present in the country if he wished to travel abroad for a job. The matter is listed for hearing on August 8. The counsel argued that the direction suffered from procedural irregularity and legal perversity, having been passed without affording a hearing to the person affected. "He will be going for a specific period and he undertakes a specific oath before this Court that he shall make himself available for trial as and when directed, therefore, there is no question of delay in trial and also there is no question of his absconding," the plea said. The engineer was booked for rape at the Christianganj Police Station of Ajmer. Accused and the woman met online According to the petition, the accused and the woman met on an online matrimonial site and had a close acquaintance for a period of approximately four years. It was alleged that the man entered into an intimate relationship with the complainant, promising her that he would marry her. Under apprehension of arrest, the engineer moved an anticipatory bail application, which was allowed. He then moved an application before the trial court to allow him to go abroad to the USA for employment. The trial court dismissed the application, which was assailed before the high court, which allowed him to go abroad but imposed a condition that his wife must remain in India.

The SIR in Bihar has sparked protests from opposition parties. Earlier on Sunday, TMC leader Derek O'Brien termed the exercise as 'silent invisible rigging". The anticipated meeting between Shah and the Bengal MPs is scheduled for the same day the TMC is holding a virtual huddle. Mamata Banerjee is expected to address all her party MPs, many of whom are in Delhi for the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament. Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee called it a "calculated attempt" by the BJP to undermine Bengali identity and demanded immediate suspension of the police officer along with a public apology from Delhi Police, the BJP and Home Minister Amit Shah. "Bengalis are not outsiders in their own homeland," he stated. However, BJP's West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya defended the police, arguing that the language used was "absolutely correct" and distinguishing between Bengali literature from India and Bangladesh. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya accused Banerjee of defending "illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators" and stated that national security would not be compromised for "vote-bank politics." CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim posted the controversial Delhi Police letter on social media and mocked the department's ignorance.
