We will compel Modi govt to withdraw waqf law: Akbar
Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen floor leader in the assembly, Akbaruddin Owaisi , on Sunday called upon Muslims to unite in their fight, within the limits of the constitutional provisions, against the new central Waqf Act. He urged them to have complete trust in Allah that they will succeed in compelling the Narendra Modi govt to withdraw the Act, which is not in favour of Muslims. Akbaruddin Owaisi was speaking at a dharna organised by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park against the new waqf law. "They think they can weaken us through this Act, which is aimed at snatching away waqf properties, but we will not allow them to weaken us. Stand shoulder to shoulder and create a wall to face any action taken against us for protesting against the Act. We will raise our voice against injustice and will not part with our shariah, hijab, imaan, and waqf properties. We will continue to extend full support and will participate in every protest programme against the Act, organised by AIMPLB," he said. Referring to verses from the 'Quran', Akbaruddin told the gathering that Allah promises that he tests only those close to him. "We should thank the Almighty for choosing us. Today, 25 crore Muslims in India are going through this test. Have faith in Allah and continue the fight democratically. Allah will give us success. Let's participate in all protest programmes against the Waqf Act under the flag of AIMPLB," he said. AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, elder brother of Akbaruddin Owaisi, had also participated in the AIMPLB-organised public meeting at Dar-Us-Salam against the Waqf Act on April 19. Presently, Asaduddin Owaisi is part of an all-party delegation to Algeria to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism to the world. India has sent several all-party delegations to show its resolve against terrorism and garner international support against Pakistan sponsoring, patronising, and training terrorists.

Waqf protests against Modi government, not Hindu community: AIMPLB president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani
All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani on Sunday asserted that series of demonstrations against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, would continue, emphasising that the 'fight' was against the Union government and not against the Hindu faith or community. Mr. Maulana Rahmani, flanked by faith leaders from various religious communities, including Sikh and Christian, and Muslims affiliated to different sects and schools of thought, as well as politicians, was addressing a public meeting organised by the AIMPLB at the Dharna Chowk. He charged the Union government with attempting to undermine the unity of those opposing the legislation. 'Our fight is only against the Central government. It is not against our Hindu brothers. The AIMPLB is of this view, and will continue with our protests,' he said. He sought to buttress his argument by pointing out that 228 Members of Parliament had opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025. These MPs, he noted, were not all Muslim, yet had voted against the Bill in the spirit of secularism and justice. 'This is a country of love, brotherhood, tolerance, and generosity. We are certain that our Hindu brothers and those who stand for justice will continue to support us,' he said. He also expressed his gratitude to members of the Sikh and Christian communities who joined the protest and spoke against the Act. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi, who shared the stage with Maulana Rahmani, pledged support for the AIMPLB's campaign against the Act. He alleged that the Waqf legislation was not intended to protect waqf properties but to ruin them. He stressed that unity among protestors was essential for the withdrawal of the Act. 'Those who think they can weaken our resolve through this law will fail. We will not give up our prayers, hijab, or waqf. We will continue our struggle within the framework of the Constitution,' Mr. Owaisi said, expressing confidence that sustained pressure would force the Modi government to withdraw the legislation. Jaleesa Yaseen, representing the AIMPLB's women's wing, said the Act raised fundamental questions about Muslim identity and sought to strip the community of its rights. She maintained that women would stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the movement and ensure that the Act is repealed. Shia scholar Hyder Agha; Shafiq Alam Khan Jamai from the Jamiat Ahle Hadees; Khalid Mubashir-uz-Zafar, State president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind; and Syed Akbar Nizamuddin Hussaini Saberi, member of Telangana State Waqf Board, also addressed the gathering.

Back-to-back protests against the Waqf Act
Two major demonstrations are scheduled on consecutive days in Hyderabad to oppose the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025 The first protest, scheduled for May 31, is being organised by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), a collaborative effort of socio-religious groups such as Tehreek Muslim Shabban, and political figures including Amjed Ullah Khan, the spokesperson of the Majlis Bachao Tehreek. Members of the Congress party have also extended their support to the protest. According to JAC convenor Mushtaq Mallik, the group had earlier sought permission from the police to organise the protest but was denied on certain grounds. The JAC said that they would go ahead with the demonstration at Dharna Chowk from 2 pm to 5 pm. Memebers had previously led the city's anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests at the same location. Meanwhile, the second protest is scheduled for June 1 and will be led by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), a pan-India body comprising Islamic scholars, legal experts, and professionals. As part of its nationwide outreach, the AIMPLB has been conducting public meetings to raise awareness about what it perceives as a negative ripple effect of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025. In Hyderabad, the Board recently held a protest meeting at Darussalam, the headquarters of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). It also recently organised a Lights Off protest and a human chain, both symbolic protests against the new waqf legislation. Both the JAC and AIMPLB have expressed confidence in mobilising large crowds in opposition to the new Act. Both protests will take place at Dharna Chowk. However, there have been murmurs, that both groups are not on the same page. Efforts to organise a single protest on one day have not been successful. There are indications that this could be due to disagreements of a political nature. The AIMPLB team, speaking to the media, pointed out that that their demonstration is scheduled for June 1. Both groups have urged the public to attend the demonstration in large numbers. The Waqf legislation has drawn criticism from various Muslim organisations and INDIA alliance leaders who maintained that it is likely that the Bharatiya Janata Party would snatch waqf properties from the control of Muslims. The Act undermines the purpose and spirit of waqf .

Asaduddin Owaisi warns of RSS exploiting Waqf legislation
Hyderabad parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) would exploit provisions of the proposed waqf legislation to initiate disputes over mosques, claiming they belong to other religions. Mr. Owaisi was addressing a women's public meeting organised by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) at the Hockey Ground where AIMPLB president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, parliamentarians Maulana Mohibbullah Nadvi and Fouzia Khan, and the convener of AIMPLB's Women's Wing, Jaleesa Yaseen, among many others were in attendance. Warning of the potential consequences of the proposed law, Mr. Owaisi said, 'If this law remains, remember that the RSS has a list of places which they claim are not masjids but sites belonging to other faiths. They want to approach the collector with representations asserting this. Until the collector completes the inquiry, the place will cease to be treated as a masjid.' He contended that waqf boards are inherently religious in nature and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misleading the public. 'There is no secular work that takes place there. The BJP is lying when it calls waqf boards secular institutions. These boards perform purely religious functions. The fifth pillar of Islam is charity through zakaat. Waqf is connected to this obligation,' Mr Owaisi stated. Rajya Sabha MP Fouzia Khan described the Union government's submission in the Supreme Court, that waqf is not an essential religious practice of Islam, as a 'cruel joke'. 'Waqf properties were endowed for religious purposes by our ancestors in the name of Allah. To claim that this is not a fundamental religious practice — what kind of joke is this?' she asked. 'Did our ancestors not donate land to masjids as waqf? And when we die, is not the land in which we are buried considered waqf? Charity is a fundamental to our faith, and it is connected to sharia,' she said. Later, Ms. Yaseen, the convener of the Women's Wing, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the rhetoric of Muslim women's empowerment as a pretext to undermine Muslim personal law and the sharia. 'During the triple talaq issue, he said the same thing: that the status of women would improve. Look at the statistics. Since 2019, has their status improved? They remain where they were,' she said. She added that none of the amendments to the Waqf Act were aimed at protecting Muslim endowments. 'If they do not protect waqf, how can they claim to empower women?' she asked. Maulana Nadwi, Lok Sabha MP from Rampur, also criticised the proposed waqf law. He stressed the obligatory nature of charity in Islam and described waqf as an extension of zakaat. 'Zakaat is the superlative degree of waqf,' he remarked.
