AIMPLB members demands withdrawal of Waqf Amendment Act 2025
Suleiman Khan, assistant general secretary and State Convener of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and AIMPLB district convener Dr. Mohammed Asgar Chulbul criticised the Central Government for introducing the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, and said that they would continue to protest until the bill is repealed.
Mr. Suleiman and Dr. Chulbul, addressing joint press persons in Kalaburagi city on Tuesday (June 17, 2025), alleged that the newly amended Waqf Act is aimed at weakening the foundations of Waqf governance and undermining the rights of Muslim community.
They alleged that the government wants to control the Waqf properties by regulating their management and the power it gets through the new Act to determine whether the property belongs to Waqf or not. Opposing the inclusion of non-Muslim members on the Waqf Boards, Mr. Suleiman said that it would interfere with the Muslim community's right to manage its own affairs, given by the Constitution.
Dr. Chulbul alleged that the Modi-led Government was targeting the Muslim community by misusing its majority to bring in discriminatory amendments to the Waqf Act forcibly against the will of the community. Furthermore, the condition requiring a Waqf (donor) to be a practicing Muslim for at least five years is not only against the Indian legal framework and constitutional Articles 14 and 26 but also conflicts with Islamic Sharia principles, he added.
'We wish to make it clear that these amendments not only violate the fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 15, 25, 26 and 29 of the Indian Constitution but also expose the government's malicious intent to gain total control over the administration of Waqf properties' Dr. Chulbul expressed.
These new Waqf Amendment Act prevent the Muslim minority from freely managing their own religious endowments (Waqf). Articles 25 and 26 of the Indian Constitution guarantee the freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practice, and propagate religion, as well as the right to establish and manage religious and charitable institutions, but the newly enforced law deprives Muslim community of these fundamental rights.
They urged the immediate intervention of the President of India to withdraw the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, citing it as undemocratic and anti-minority.

Will Centre pay 18 months' DA arrears to employees, pensioners frozen during Covid? Finance Ministry gives MAJOR update
The government has responded to a question on whether or not central government employees and pensioners will get their three instalments of Dearness Allowance (DA) and arrears frozen during Covid-19, saying that it was 'not feasible'. Answering a question at the Lok Sabha on August 11 regarding the roll out of three instalments of arrears that were frozen during Covid-19, Member of Parliament Anand Bhaduria cited economic disruption during that time and said that the arrears were frozen due to that reason. The government pays DA and arrears a cost-of-living adjustment to its employees and pensioners to offset the impact of inflation. DA is usually given twice a year to employees, while DR or Dearness Relief is paid to pensioners. The arrears are credited on a pro-rated basis. However, during Covid-19, the government had frozen these arrears for a period of 18 months, which comes down to three instalments. Here is a breakdown of the questions asked at the Lok Sabha and the government's answers on August 11. Answer: The decision to freeze three instalments of Dearness Allowance (DA) / Dearness Relief (DR) to Central Government employees / pensioners due from 01.01.2020, 01.07.2020 & 01.01.2021 was taken in the context of COVID-19, which caused economic disruption, so as to ease pressure on Government finances. if so, whether fiscal condition of the Government is still under pressure and is on the verge of bankruptcy. Answer: The fiscal deficit of the Government of India has narrowed from 9.2 per cent in the Financial Year (FY) 2020-21 to 4.4 per cent in the FY 2025-26 (Budget Estimates). Answer: The adverse financial impact of pandemic in 2020 and the financing of welfare measures taken by the Government had a fiscal spill over beyond FY 2020-21. Therefore, arrears of DA/DR were not considered feasible.

Gujarat govt stands by its decision to suspend Par-Tapi-Narmada project: Minister
The Gujarat government on Wednesday made it clear that it stands by its decision to suspend the Par-Tapi-Narmada River linking Project, and neither the state government nor the Central government has any intention to take it forward. Responding to a query at a press briefing, senior minister and spokesperson of the state government Rushikesh Patel said that the government stands by its 2022 decision of suspending the project. Patel alleged that the Opposition Congress was trying to mislead the people of Gujarat by doing politics over the issue. Asked if the government has suspended the project or cancelled it, Patel said, 'Two states are involved in the project and consent of both the states is necessary. However, we have already made our decision – the Gujarat government does not want to go ahead with the project. We have clearly informed the Central government that we (Gujarat government) do not want to move ahead with the Par-Tapi-Narmada project.' The project was suspended ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections after widespread protests against the project, mainly by tribals from south Gujarat. Later, quoting Patel, an official statement said, 'In 1980, the then government had tried to bring the Par-Tapi-Narmada project for the first time. After that, in 2011, the then union government of Prime Minister late Manmohan Singh had presented it. In 2017, the detailed project report (DPR) was prepared by the concerned ministry.' 'The announcement to suspend the project was made by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Navsari MP C R Paatil in 2022. Since then, till today, no movement has been done related to the project either by the Gujarat government or the central government,' the statement said. The statement referred to a question raised in the Rajya Sabha related to the project and said that the reply made a reference to the DPR related to the project. 'The DPR mentioned in the Rajya Sabha is that of 2017 and after 2017, no new DPR has been made public,' the statement said. 'Union Minister for Jal Shakti C R Paatil has also made it clear on August 10 that neither the central government nor the state government has any intention of taking this project forward. The Gujarat government too decided not to take this project forward in a cabinet meeting. The government stands by its decision of suspending the project in 2022.' The project proposed to transfer river water from the surplus regions of the Western Ghats to the deficit regions of Saurashtra and Kutch. It proposes to link three rivers — Par, originating from Nashik in Maharashtra and flowing through Valsad, Tapi from Saputara that flows through Maharashtra and Surat in Gujarat, and Narmada originating in Madhya Pradesh and flowing through Maharashtra and Bharuch and Narmada districts in Gujarat.

Savarkar defamation case: Rahul Gandhi disowns 'threat to life' plea; Congress says lawyer 'acted without consent'
NEW DELHI: Congress on Wednesday said that Rahul Gandhi 's advocate filed a statement citing a "threat to his life" without consulting the leader or obtaining his consent. In a social media post on X, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said that Rahul "strongly disagrees" with the statement and that his lawyer will withdraw the application on Thursday. "Rahul Gandhi's lawyer had filed a written statement in court citing a threat to his life without consulting him or obtaining his consent," Shrinate said. "Rahul Gandhi strongly disagrees with this action. Therefore, his lawyer will withdraw this written statement from the court tomorrow," she added. Shrinate also attached Rahul's lawyer Milind Pawar's statement in which he said that the contents of the application were drafted by him without consulting Rahul. This comes hours after Pawar, in a written application, told a Pune court that Rahul is facing a "threat to life" from the complainant in a defamation case related to his remarks against Savarkar, Bar and Bench reported. In the application submitted to the court, it was said that the complainant is a direct descendant of Nathuram Godse and that 'preventive protection is not only prudent but is a constitutional obligation upon the State." "Given the documented history of violent and anti-constitutional tendencies linked to the complainant's lineage… there exists a clear, reasonable, and substantial apprehension that Shri Rahul Gandhi may face harm, wrongful implication, or other forms of targeting,' it was submitted. 'In view of the grave history associated with such lineage, the defence harbours a genuine and reasonable apprehension that history must not be permitted to repeat itself,' it added. Reacting to the plea, Satyaki Savarkar said it was frivolous, and filed with the intention of delaying the trial. "The facts mentioned in the application by Gandhi have nothing to do with the present case," he told reporters. What is the case about? Satyaki Savarkar has filed a complaint against Gandhi, alleging that in a speech made in London in March 2023, the Congress leader claimed that V D Savarkar had written in a book that he and five to six of his friends once beat up a Muslim man and he (Savarkar) felt happy. Satyaki Savarkar said no such incident ever took place, and that V D Savarkar never wrote any such thing anywhere. He has sought Gandhi's conviction under Section 500 IPC and compensation under Section 357 CrPC. The court has already granted bail to Rahul in the case.
