Dan Orlovsky cannot stop talking about one Minnesota Vikings player ahead of 2025

USA Today5 hours ago

Dan Orlovsky may not have been the quarterback he had hoped to be in the NFL, but he has more than made up for it as an analyst and in how he now teaches the game to others. The former UConn quarterback now works out of the same state he played college football in as an analyst for ESPN.
As one of their lead football analysts, Orlovsky has the chance to talk about anyone and any team in the league. However, he has remained steadfast in his optimism about the Minnesota Vikings and J.J. McCarthy.
While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, Orlovsky displayed a trademark smile when asked if he was still high on J.J. McCarthy heading into the 2025 season and training camp.
The former NFL quarterback said, "I think he's gonna be awesome this year, honestly. I totally believe, production-wise, he'll play very similar to what Sam did last year. One, there's just a scheme and a roster talent — Minnesota's the easiest place in the NFL to play quarterback this year. It's as good an offensive roster as we have in the NFL. And then you combine it with scheme and play caller in Kevin O'Connell. . .I think J.J., the skills that he has and the foundation that he has, he's a play on rhythm, listen to his feet when it comes to where and when to throw the football, the timing of the way he plays the position. . .perfect for what is the necessary stuff playing that position in Minnesota."
Beyond just the coaching and atmosphere of the Vikings, the roster isn't half bad either. The work of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and his staff this offseason has McCarthy stepping into the best situation of a first-time starter in the recent history of the NFL.

Stephen A. Smith Facing Backlash After Cameras Catch Him During NBA Finals

Stephen A. Smith Facing Backlash After Cameras Catch Him During NBA Finals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. ESPN "First Take" and "NBA Countdown" host Stephen A. Smith has been, as usual, turning heads with his opinions on the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2025 NBA Finals. Advertisement In particular, he took offense to Tyrese Haliburton criticizing the way people like him in the media cover the NBA. Before Game 4, he stated on "First Take" that "players far more accomplished and far more superior have made their efforts trying to call me out. How has that worked out?" Then, as Haliburton and the Pacers battled the Thunder in a thrilling Game 4 on Friday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Smith was caught by a fan's camera doing something that would be hard for even him to talk his way out of. ESPN's Stephen A. SmithKirby Lee-Imagn Images Social media users were furious when they saw the photo of the $100 million ESPN star that went viral during Game 4. Advertisement A fan at the game looked down and took a photo of him appearing to play solitaire on his phone during the game. Though it was unclear when the photo was taken, the crowd in the background was standing up and appeared to be engaged in the action on the court, unlike Smith. "How can you have all of these opinions while you're playing solitaire instead of watching the game @stephenasmith?" the user said. "This who @espn paying 100 million," said another harsh fan. "They pay him to be an entertainer, not an analyst," another critic said on X. "When you look at it that way, it all makes sense. ESPN continues to be a joke." Advertisement "Please let this absolutely explode, modern day media is TERRIBLE," wrote a jaded fan. In the end, the Thunder evened the series at 2-2 with a massive 111-104 win before heading back to Oklahoma City for Game 5 on Monday. Raiders Predicted to Cut Ties With Fan Favorite RB Before Season

Raiders Predicted to Cut Ties With Fan Favorite RB Before Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders' running back room is going to look quite different this season. First-round pick Ashton Jeanty will almost certainly be the starter, and veteran free agent signing Raheem Mostert is the likely backup. Advertisement That's going to leave several talented players left to fight for either one or two roster spots. One player who is going to have an uphill battle is 2024 sixth-round pick Dylan Laube. He was impressive in training camp last offseason, which led to him becoming a quick fan favorite. However, he fumbled on his first career carry, and the Raiders didn't give him another one for the rest of the season. Las Vegas Raiders RB Dylan Ward-Imagn Images Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal put together a 53-man roster prediction ahead of training camp, and he projects that Laube will miss the cut. "It was obvious during the Raiders offseason program that Jeanty, the sixth overall pick in this year's draft, is not a typical running back," Bonsignore wrote. "His combination of power, balance, grace and burst is exceptional. The only question is how high his ceiling is and how quickly he can reach it. There will be competition for snaps behind him, as Mostert and McCormick have been productive when given opportunities in the NFL. White also reported to OTAs and minicamp in great shape after a disappointing season. Laube, a 2024 sixth-round pick, is likely on the roster bubble and may need to shine on special teams to earn a spot." Advertisement Laube would be a great candidate to make the practice squad, but it's difficult to see a scenario where he makes the 53-man roster to start the season. $132 Million WR Was Trying to Get to Raiders This Offseason, Says Former Player

$132 Million WR Was Trying to Get to Raiders This Offseason, Says Former Player originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders had a very busy offseason, but new general manager John Spytek has shown a lot of discipline early on. Instead of spending a ton of money on big-name free agents or trading for disgruntled star skill position players, he's exercised a more patient approach. Advertisement However, the Raiders did have a big need at wide receiver this offseason, and DK Metcalf was an obvious fit due to his previous ties with head coach Pete Carroll. The team already made one trade with the Seattle Seahawks by dealing for Geno Smith, so another transaction wouldn't have been out of the question. Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Plus, it sounds like Metcalf really wanted to go to Las Vegas. Carroll was a guest on Da Get Got Pod With Marshawn Lynch & Mike Robinson. The topic of Smith coming to the Raiders came up, which led Lynch to talk about how Carroll wanted to bring a lot of former Seahawks to Las Vegas. "I know, remember DK (Metcalf) wanted to go there," Robinson chimed in. Advertisement They quickly moved on from that talking point, but it was a very interesting note for Robinson to drop. He was a former Seahawks player, and Lynch played with Metcalf briefly, so it stands to reason that they'd have some insight into his thought process. It's not entirely clear why the Raiders wouldn't have wanted to trade for the star wide receiver. He did end up costing the Steelers $132 million once he got traded, so perhaps the team just didn't want to pay him that kind of money after a trade.
