‘Special' Max Dowman, 15, adds to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal dilemma as he shines in same position as Saka and Nwaneri
Mikel Arteta has had his eye on 15-year-old Dowman for the past 12 months and regularly introduced him to first-team training sessions.

Had it not been for regulation barriers in both the Prem and Uefa, the Hale End schoolboy would have made his competitive senior debut by now under Arteta.
That's how highly rated he is by everyone at London Colney, leaving most first-team players stunned by his progression, ability and unflappable nature.
Even Arteta has been shocked by how quickly Dowman has become one of, if not the, most talented teenagers in the country, and it will now be a surprise if he is not named in most of Arsenal's matchday squads next season across all four competitions they are involved in.
After travelling with the squad on their mid-season warm-weather Dubai camp back in February, the plan was always for Dowman and a select few others from the academy to fly to Singapore and Hong Kong.
No one on the outside looking in could have guessed how much game time he would get in their opening two games in Singapore against AC Milan and Newcastle last week.
A total of 55 minutes off the bench is not bad going, especially for someone who still needs to be managed, both physically with his slight and yet-to-develop muscular frame against elite man mountains, and mentally as he comes to terms with the pressure being on him as the golden boy of Arsenal's latest academy grads.
Arteta has a history in guiding young talents and transforming them into first-team players faster than most would predict, just look at Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
The pair were footballing nobodies at the start of last season – mere hopefuls – who looked their age, perhaps younger.
Now, they have bulked up, matured on and off the pitch and look like Prem regulars, and in Lewis-Skelly's case, potentially England's first-choice left-back at next summer's World Cup.
Arteta has known when to push them and when to give them some time away from the spotlight, a crucial period of development for any teenager adjusting to Prem football.
Arsenal CONFIRM £63.5million Viktor Gyokeres transfer as striker takes iconic No14 made famous by Thierry Henry
Nwaneri had just that after making his Prem debut aged 15 at Brentford in September 2022, waiting 17 months for his next one at West Ham in February 2024.
Once Dowman makes his first Prem appearances, the clamour for him to push on at lightning speed will be huge.
We have already seen what that could look and sound like on this tour. In Singapore, his name has been chanted at every game and he was hounded for autographs at the open training at the Singapore National Stadium.
Arteta will have to be the party pooper more often than not in the early months of the season, but should he perform like he has done against Milan and Newcastle, the handbrake may have to come off sooner than expected.
His touch, turn and dribble past several Newcastle players and into the box to earn a match-winning penalty in the final ten minutes last weekend shows what he can do against experienced players nearly twice his age.
Arteta has used Dowman off the right so far, a position the youngster has played a lot in for the youth teams for club and country, cutting in and shooting – often scoring – with his left foot.
There will be a method to Arteta's thinking – being on the wing gives Dowman some breathing space during games as he continues his adaptation.

He may eventually move into a more central position over the next few years, but Arteta likes his young players trying out different roles to aid their learning and to give him more options when picking squads.
Nwaneri played in a midfield three last season, but also on the right in Bukayo Saka's three-month injury absence, and Arteta has spoken previously of the 18-year-old potentially becoming a No9 later down the line.
Dowman could now start his first senior Arsenal game against Tottenham on Thursday in Hong Kong, and the crazy thing is that it does not sound that... crazy.
That's how quickly Dowman is progressing. Arteta called him 'special' after the Toon outing, and the Spanish coach does not chuck praise like that lightly.
Last term, Arteta would bring up Dowman's name unprompted in answers to questions about squad depth.

We must be careful not to hype up too soon someone who has not yet turned 16, but it is hard not to when he is getting better with every minute he plays around world class players while showing he has the guts to step up in penalty shoot-outs, albeit a friendly one against Milan last week.
Club captain Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice have acted as brotherly figures for him, but even they are struggling not to board the Dowman hype train.
Last March, Rice claimed he was the 'best 15-year-old in the country'.
With a loan move unlikely next season, Dowman is set to be a regular face on the bench as Arteta plots the talented kid's path from a nobody to a special somebody.

Hibs transfer news: Will Scotland star Hanley be won over by Euro drama?
Former Newcastle star in frame as reports claim Blackburn close in on Lewis Miller Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! And to win over any potential signing who just happened to be in attendance. Yes Grant Hanley, we're looking straight at you. David Gray certainly believes that last night's scenes at Easter Road, despite his Hibs side eventually slipping out of the Europa League courtesy of two world-class goals from mighty Midtjylland, couldn't have harmed his club's reputation as a prized destination. Scotland defender Hanley, sitting the main stand alongside former international team-mate David Marshall for a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat after extra time, would surely have been an interested audience of one. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Although Gray danced around his club's confirmed and obvious interest in the 33-year-old former Blackburn, Newcastle United and Norwich centre-half, the Hibs boss did respond in the affirmative when asked if the whole occasion would have impressed any potential signing who might have been there, saying: 'I would think so. It was a fantastic night in terms of the atmosphere. The fans were outstanding. 'The amount of tickets that were sold, the backing right throughout it. Because being there as a player, there's no better feeling than when you start to feel tired and the crowd get right behind you. They certainly did that.' Ex-Norwich defender Hanley has 62 caps for Scotland Asked outright if he was aiming to bring in Hanley, Gray said: 'No, I think we're just always looking into the squad to see what can be done. I think right now, whilst the window's open, you're always going to be getting speculation and rumours. 'But for me, I'd rather talk about the players that are in the building tonight, purely because of what they've given me. I think that would be the right thing to do. And then we'll look at that down the line.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs have made Hanley aware of their interest, obviously. Marshall's role as sporting director Malky Mackay's right-hand man suggests that there's been at least some discussion over the terms of any deal for a player whose loan spell with Birmingham last season saw the Blues win promotion to the EFL Championship. Seven-figure offers rejected for Socceroos star With reports down south suggesting Lewis Miller is bound for Blackburn, that leaves Hibs with a gap to fill. Wedded to playing three at the back, Gray needs a group of five central defenders on his books to cover for injuries and suspensions. Asked if Hanley's presence in the stadium suggested that contract talks had begun, Gray said: 'No, listen, I think, as I say, there's a number of players that we're looking at. 'There's a number of players that have come up. There's areas in which we might need to improve. There's areas in which we're always linked, players linked away from here as well. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'So whilst the window's open, there's always a need to be active, there's always speculation. So we always need to be moving towards making sure we finish the window stronger than when we started it. And that's what we're working towards.' Miller, currently out with a minor injury, had an extension clause in his contract triggered towards the end of last season. Hibs have already rejected a couple of £1 million-plus offers for the Socceroos star, who can play in central defence, right back or at right wing back – but reports in the Blackburn media last night claimed a fee had been agreed between the clubs.

Friday's briefing: West Ham's Lucas Paqueta cleared of spot-fixing charges
Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is training individually at Real Sociedad as his stand-off with Newcastle drags on. Ella Toone has revealed her grandmother died on the morning of England's Euro 2025 final victory over Spain. Paqueta cleared of spot-fixing charges West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta is looking forward to playing football 'with a smile on his face' again after four spot-fixing charges against him which could have effectively finished his career were found not proven. The Brazilian has been under investigation since August 2023, with the Football Association charging him in May 2024 with four alleged breaches of Rule E5.1, which relates to any attempt to improperly influence any aspect of a match. It was alleged he deliberately attempted to receive a card in four Premier League games between November 2022 and August 2023. He learned the outcome on Friday, and for Paqueta the decision has lifted a huge weight from his shoulders. 'Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations,' he said. 'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. 'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me – thank you for everything.' Isak training alone at Sociedad Alexander Isak is training alone at former club Real Sociedad (Owen Humphreys/PA) Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is training individually at Real Sociedad, the Basque club have confirmed. The Sweden international, who is reported to have asked Newcastle executives to explore a move away from St James' Park, has been heavily linked with Liverpool. His former club Sociedad confirmed on Thursday he was 'working with his trainers' at the club's Zubieta facility. The player did not travel with the rest of the Newcastle squad earlier this month for their pre-season tour of Asia amid speculation over his future, with the club saying at the time he was absent due to a minor thigh injury. The decision to train at his old club rather than his current one will heighten speculation that Isak sees his future away from Newcastle. Toone reveals grandmother died ahead of final Ella Toone has revealed her grandmother died on the morning of the Lioness's won over Spain (Peter Byrne/PA) Ella Toone has revealed her grandmother died on the morning of England's Euro 2025 final victory over Spain. The 25-year-old played the opening 87 minutes of Sunday's match in Basel as the Lionesses retained their title thanks to a penalty shoot-out win following a 1-1 draw. The Manchester United midfielder lost her father Nick to prostate cancer last September, three days short of his 60th birthday. He had been diagnosed the day after watching his daughter score in the Euro 2022 final as England beat Germany 2-1 at Wembley. 'Even in the highest of highs life can hit you with the lowest of lows,' she posted on Instagram. 'My Nana Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final. I have comfort in knowing she got to watch from the best seat in the house with Dad, her favourite person.' Crisis growing at Wednesday A message from Henrik 🇩🇰🦉 — Sheffield Wednesday (@swfc) July 31, 2025 The financial crisis at Sheffield Wednesday is causing growing concern within the English Football League over whether the club will be able to play their opening game of the Sky Bet Championship season, the PA news agency understands. It is understood Wednesday players have refused to feature in a scheduled behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley on Saturday after the club failed to pay their wages on time. The Owls are currently under an EFL embargo for unpaid transfer fees and owner Dejphon Chansiri is trying to sell the cash-strapped club. Wednesday appointed Henrik Pedersen as their new head coach on Thursday following the departure of Danny Rohl and, just hours later, Saturday's friendly was cancelled as players and coaching staff decided to boycott the match after not receiving July's monthly salary on time. What's on today? 24 hours until we raise the curtain on 2025/26 🫡 — Luton Town FC (@LutonTown) July 31, 2025 Luton begin their League One campaign following relegation last season against AFC Wimbledon at Kenilworth Road. Arbroath kick off the Scottish Championship season at home to Ayr United. The FA Cup continues with seven matches in the extra preliminary round.
