Justin Rose wins nail-biting playoff against JJ Spaun to claim FedEx Cup title

The Guardian18 hours ago
Justin Rose produced a sensational finish at the FedEx St Jude Championship with six birdies in his last final eight holes to win a playoff against the US Open champion JJ Spaun.
The English golfer, who at 45 became the oldest European to win on the PGA Tour in the modern era, looked out of it after a bogey at the 12th dropped him to 12 under. That left Rose two off the pace with Tommy Fleetwood, the world No 1 Scottie Scheffler and Spaun ahead of him.
But four birdies from the 14th catapulted Rose to the top of the leaderboard and he just missed a 13-foot putt at the last to win outright. He produced two more birdies in three playoff holes, one a clutch effort after Spaun had holed from distance, with the second from 14ft after Spaun was half that distance away proving decisive as his opponent's attempt to extend the contest raced past.
'That was an amazing last 90 minutes. I never stopped believing,' Rose said. 'I played unbelievable golf coming down the stretch and had so much fun with it. JJ dropped a bomb on me [at the second playoff hole], it was a lot of fun.
'When I bring my best I know I'm good enough to play against the best players in the world. This is going to be a fun one for us to celebrate.'

Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) still unable to practice

August 11 - Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford missed Monday's practice in an unexpected development as he continues to nurse a back injury. Los Angeles coach Sean McVay declared over the weekend that the 37-year-old signal-caller would participate in his first training camp practice on Monday. Instead, Stafford was dressed in street clothes and reporters observed him stepping into an Airstream-type trailer known as an Ammortal chamber at the team's training complex in Woodland Hills, Calif. The Ammortal chamber is advertised as a "wellness device that aims to optimize human performance and promote holistic health through a combination of non-invasive technologies." Stafford is dealing with an aggravated disc in his back, which has limited his preparation as he heads into his 17th season. In his absence, Stetson Bennett IV threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 31-21 preseason win against the Dallas Cowboys in Inglewood, Calif. The Rams open the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 7, with a visit from the Houston Texans. Stafford completed 340 of 517 passes (65.8 percent) for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season while starting all 16 games in which he appeared. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Stafford has completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 59,809 yards, 377 TDs and 188 interceptions in 222 regular-season games (all starts) with the Detroit Lions (2009-20) and Rams. He ranks 10th all-time in touchdown passes and passing yardage -- and second to Aaron Rodgers among active quarterbacks. The Lions selected him with the first overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Georgia. Stafford led the Rams to a 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. --Field Level Media

Veteran stock-car driver dies after crash in North Carolina

A veteran stock-car driver has tragically died after suffering a medical emergency during a race at a North Carolina short track over the weekend. Robbie Brewer, 53, was competing in a 20-lap Sportsman Series race at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem when his car struck a wall head-on on the quarter-mile (0.40-kilometre) track. His vehicle came to a stop near the start-finish line. Track workers quickly removed Brewer by peeling away the roof of his car, before an ambulance transported him to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist hospital, where he later died, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Track officials confirmed the news in a statement on Sunday, saying: "We are saddened by the passing of Robbie Brewer after he was transported to an area medical facility following an on-track medical incident. Robbie was a talented and passionate racer, and highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie's family and friends at this time." The specific details of the medical emergency have not been released. Bowman Gray Stadium is a popular venue, drawing thousands of fans weekly for races across four four divisions. Brewer made his career debut at the oval in 1990 and amassed nearly 260 starts in the Sportsman Division, notably winning the points championship in 2011. Fellow Bowman Gray driver Brad Lewis, whose race shop is close to where Brewer lived, paid tribute to his friend. "He was like a big brother to me even though we were not that far apart in age," Lewis said. "He was a wheelman through and through. I'm not only going to honour him the rest of the season but for as long as we race out there. He'll be missed."
