Bollywood actor
Vijay Raaz
was acquitted on Thursday by a Maharashtra court in a
sexual harassment case
filed against him in 2020 by a female crew member during the shoot of Vidya Balan-starrer Sherni. The Gondia court held that the prosecution had "failed to present sufficient evidence" to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
Court cites lack of evidence and lapses in investigation
As per PTI, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahendra Sorte dropped the charges under Sections 354-A (sexual harassment) and 354-D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code, citing serious lapses in the investigation.
The complaint had been filed at the Ramnagar police station in Gondia, alleging that
Raaz
harassed the woman between the night of October 25 and morning of October 29, 2020, at a hotel where the film's cast and crew were lodged. The actor was arrested on November 4, 2020, in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, and was granted bail the same day.

According to the court order, the investigating officer did not visit the alleged crime scene nor did they record the statements of hotel staff members named by the complainant. 'The evidence presented by the prosecution appears weak and insufficient,' the judge observed. Even the CCTV footage submitted by the prosecution 'did not clearly show the accused committing the alleged act.'
The court noted that 'the oral evidence presented by the prosecution was not sufficient to convict the accused,' and therefore, Raaz was acquitted. The benefit of doubt, as per criminal law, went to the accused.
Raaz arrested, granted bail the same day
Raaz's lawyer Saveena Bedi Sachar welcomed the verdict, stating, 'He was shooting near Nagpur for Sherni when the case came up. Not only did he have to leave the shoot midway, but he also lost work thereafter.' She further added, 'Now that the court has declared him innocent, this should be an eye-opener for those who treat every accused as guilty from the moment allegations are made.'

Court dismisses Justin Baldoni's $400 million defamation suit against Blake Lively; rules her harassment claims are legally protected

In a major legal setback, Justin Baldoni's $400 million defamation lawsuit against Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds has been dismissed by a judge. The court upheld that Lively's sexual harassment allegations are legally protected. Lively's legal team hailed the decision as a victory, planning to pursue attorneys' fees and damages against Baldoni, accusing him of abusive litigation. A judge on Monday threw out Justin Baldoni 's $400 million defamation lawsuit against Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds , ruling that Lively's sexual harassment allegations are legally protected and cannot be challenged in court. Judge Lewis J. Liman dismissed Justin Baldoni's sweeping $400 million lawsuit — which included claims of defamation, extortion, and more — ruling most of it legally baseless. However, the court granted Baldoni permission to amend and refile limited claims related to alleged interference with contracts. Blake Lively's legal team celebrated the court's decision, calling it 'a total victory and a complete vindication' not just for Lively, but also for those named in what they described as a 'retaliatory lawsuit,' including Ryan Reynolds, Leslie Sloane, and The New York Times. Labeling the $400 million suit a 'sham,' the lawyers said the court 'saw right through it.' They added that they now plan to pursue attorneys' fees, treble damages, and punitive damages against Justin Baldoni, Wayfarer co-founders and other parties involved in the 'abusive litigation. In his Monday ruling, Judge Lewis J Liman found that the original allegations—filed with the California Civil Rights Department and later shared with The New York Times—were protected under litigation privilege, a legal safeguard that shields such claims from defamation lawsuits. Judge Liman also ruled that The New York Times was shielded by the 'fair report' privilege, which protects media outlets from defamation claims when reporting accurately on legal proceedings.

Nepal man held with explosives near key suspension bridge in Pithoragarh

Pithoragarh: A 37-year-old man from Nepal was arrested by the Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB) on Sunday night near a key suspension bridge in Dharchula area of Pithoragarh district, which connects India and Nepal, after explosives were found in his possession. Officials said SSB personnel spotted Yam Bahadur Khatri, a resident of Padampur village in Surkhet district, "loitering suspiciously" near the bridge. Upon searching his bag, they recovered one kilogram of explosive emulsion and five detonators. He was immediately detained and handed over to Dharchula police on Monday for further investigation. KS Rawat, circle officer of Dharchula, said, "The explosives Khatri was carrying were made in Nepal. During interrogation, he claimed he was transporting the material for construction purposes. He said the route on the Nepal side was in poor condition, so he decided to take the Indian road to reach his destination. That's when he was arrested by an SSB patrol team." Dharchula SHO Brijendra Saha said, "A case has been registered against Khatri under sections 4 (punishment for attempts to cause explosions, or for making or keeping explosive substances with the intent to endanger life or property) and 5 (punishment for making or possessing explosive substances under suspicious circumstances) of the Explosives Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo He was produced before a judicial magistrate on Monday and remanded to 14 days' judicial custody. It is frequently used by locals from both countries for trade, essential services and family visits. Citizens are permitted to cross the border without a visa or passport. The area holds geopolitical significance as it is situated near the India-Nepal-China tri-junction. The nearby Lipulekh Pass is a strategic corridor for India that connects to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route and overlooks China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

2 Charred To Death As E-Rick Being Charged Catches Fire

New Delhi: Two men, including a 55-year-old, died after a fire broke out when an e-rickshaw was being recharged in east Delhi's Dilshad Garden late on Sunday night. The deceased were identified as Shashi and Ballu. Police received information about the fire in Tahirpur Kodi Colony around 11.39pm on Sunday. The cops described the building where the incident took place as a ground floor and three upper floors built on an approximately 25 sq yard plot. "The fire had broken out on the ground floor of the house. Head constable Rajkumar acted promptly and evacuated a woman named Meera Devi," a police officer said. After the fire service extinguished the flames, the bodies of Shashi, 25, an e-rickshaw driver, and Ballu, 55, a vagabond who occasionally drove e-rickshaws, were discovered. They were sent to the hospital to ascertain the cause of death. Two e-rickshaws were also found scorched. Police said that the charging point was illegal. "Inquiries revealed that e-rickshaws were being recharged on the ground floor of the house. The fire was caused by a short circuit," the officer revealed. Shashi lived in the house with his parents and three brothers. A case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita's sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence) and 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter) has been registered at Nand Nagri police station. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Anurag, Shashi's brother, claimed the fire was triggered by a short circuit in the electrical board. He said the malfunction caused the inverter to catch fire, which quickly spread and burnt a motorcycle parked nearby. "My brother worked as a bus conductor, but more recently, he had started earning a living by driving an e-rickshaw," said Anurag. He added, "Ballu, who had no permanent residence, occasionally accompanied my brother on rides in the e-rickshaw. At night, Ballu usually slept on the ground floor with Shashi. At the time of the fire too, they were together." Anurag explained that after the flames started spreading, the tenants present in the building managed to escape safely. His elderly mother was also evacuated from the premises in time. "We used to charge both our e-rickshaws outside the house because there wasn't enough space inside," he said.
