Two individuals appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court on May 15, 2025, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and unwrought gold valued at R16 million.
Colonel Katlego Mogale, provincial spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), stated that a multi-disciplinary team, including the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime unit and the Gauteng SAPS Flying Squad, acted on a tip-off to successfully apprehend two suspects during an intelligence-led operation coordinated by the Germiston-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit.
'Acting on a tip-off, authorities intercepted a grey BMW reportedly travelling from the Free State to Gauteng, allegedly transporting unwrought gold meant for illegal trade.'
Mogale explained that the authorities intercepted the targeted vehicle on the R21 and successfully stopped it. A thorough search of the vehicle and its occupants revealed a bag holding 80 gold bars, each weighing 100 grams, with a combined estimated value of R16 million.
'The pair could not furnish the officers with documentation to be transporting such materials and were subsequently arrested for unlawful possession of unwrought and possession of suspected stolen property,' she added.
Daniel Schubert (61) and Adriaan Petrus du Plessis (49) appeared in court, but their fate remains uncertain as their case was postponed to May 22 for a formal bail hearing. Both men remain behind bars.
Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, praised the team for their exceptional dedication and outstanding work in executing the operation.
"The Hawks remain steadfast in their mission to dismantle illegal mining and smuggling networks. Criminals must understand that no one is beyond the reach of the law. We will continue to use every available resource to combat these unlawful activities that exploit our country's precious metals for personal gain," Kadwa emphasised.

A practising attorney, entrusted with about R6 million, is set to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court. She faces numerous charges, including fraud, theft, contravention of the Attorneys Act, and money laundering. The 47-year-old lawyer was allegedly entrusted with the R6 million in cash from an estate. Warrant Officer, Fikiswa Matoti, says the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Bloemfontein served the attorney with a summons. 'This amount was supposed to be held in a trust account on behalf of the complainant, but it was kept in the suspect's personal account. The lawyer allegedly aided a person to escape police custody in Limpopo. Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa said the first suspect was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle. 'He was handcuffed, and while police officials were busy with the arrangements to take the suspect to the police station, his attorney took him to his vehicle (attorney's car) and drove away at high speed.' Minister Parks Tau faces pressure over lottery licence award

Image: Supplied Trade, Industry, and Competition Minister Parks Tau is facing mounting pressure after a losing bidder for the fourth lottery licence, Lekalinga (RF) Pty Ltd, applied to the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, seeking to review and set aside the decision to award the licence to Sizekhaya Holdings. The court application comes as the DA has called for Tau to appear before the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition to clarify how he selected Sizekhaya Holdings and how he struck a deal with Ithuba Holdings, the current operator of the National Lottery. The DA has written to the Chairperson of the portfolio committee, Mzwandile Masina, demanding that Tau and the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) chairperson, Barney Pityana, appear before the committee to account for the opaque manner in which Sizekhaya Holdings was appointed as the new licence holder. Lekalinga (RF) Pty Ltd, a Serbian-based company that teamed up with local partners, has filed a court application that seeks to force Tau to produce the record of his decision when awarding the licence to Sizekhaya Holdings. The company, founded by Vladimir Vukovic, is questioning whether Sizekhaya could lawfully be awarded the licence, given its alleged non-compliance with some of the conditions bidders had to adhere to. Vukovic said in his affidavit that his company had teamed up with local partners to bid for the licence but was not informed of the reasons for the decision. "As a result, Lekalinga does not know the basis on which the licence was awarded to Sizekhaya or why the other bids were unsuccessful," he said. Vukovic raised concerns regarding Sizekhaya's alleged links to the JSE-listed gaming group Goldrush and the potential for indirect financial interests held by prohibited persons. "The record should reveal the extent to which the minister assessed whether any political party or political office-bearer holds a direct or indirect financial interest in Sizekhaya and ensured compliance with the applicable prohibitions," he said. Vukovic also questioned Sizekhaya's ability to take over the lottery within the stipulated five-month timeframe. "This timeline is significant. It points to the ability to mobilise resources, infrastructure, and operational capacity within that timeframe," he said. Tau's spokesperson, Yamkela Fanisi, said Tau respected the decision made by Vukovic. "The minister respects the decision by those who were not successful bidders... He believes the process was credible and followed due process. At a time when the portfolio committee calls us to account, we will do so," Fanisi said. Meanwhile, Tau has applied for leave to appeal against a recent court ruling that set aside his decision to grant a 12-month temporary licence to Ithuba Holdings. The appeal, lodged with the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, effectively allows Ithuba to continue running the lottery until the appeal outcome is reached. Ithuba has agreed to continue operating the National Lottery, ensuring that all games, draws, and prize payouts will proceed normally. The company has reassured the public that it will maintain their commitment to integrity, transparency, and the benefit of South Africans. While Ithuba's continued operation provides short-term relief, the long-term future of the National Lottery remains uncertain. Sizekhaya Holdings is set to take over the lottery in June 2026, but questions remain about the transparency of the licensing process and the impact of further legal challenges, and how Tau struck a deal with Ithuba to hold the fort while Sizekhaya is obtaining its licence.

Activists detained in Egypt ahead of Gaza humanitarian march

Image: File A PAGAD (People Against Gangsterism and Drugs) delegation was detained for 11 hours and were at risk of deportation as they made their way to the Global March to Gaza. They are part of the thousands of activists who travelled to Egypt's Rafah Border Crossing to the strip on Friday to demand the entry of humanitarian aid. National Coordinator Haroon Orrie was detained along with six others. PAGAD's spokesperson, Cassiem Parker, said: 'The seven went through normal immigration procedure and then were told that they were being detained and might be deported. 'Their luggage was taken from them and was kept in a holding area from 3am to 2pm, Egypt time. 'They were kept with several hundred other people from other countries coming into Cairo. At 2pm, they were told that they could continue but were not given any reason for their detention. 'They have subsequently said there are reports of raids on hotels, etc.' ANC regional spokesperson, Muhammad Khalid Sayed, said they note the information around the PAGAD delegation. 'We want to commend them for embarking on this global march to Gaza. It is in line with the South African stance of solidarity with the people of Palestine. "But we are extremely concerned with the news that has come to us, and we hope that our authorities in Egypt make every effort to assist in having this particular matter resolved.' GOOD Secretary-General Brett Herron said: 'The GOOD Party condemns the detention of members of the South African-based organisation PAGAD by Egyptian authorities, reportedly ahead of their planned participation in the Global March to Gaza. 'The delegation, whose mission was one of solidarity and peace, is now being threatened with deportation.
