Three more arrested for murder of JMPD officer

Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD) cop in Vlakfontein last week. They were allegedly found with the slain officer's service pistol that was stolen during the attack. The suspects aged between 20 and 35 were arrested on Saturday in Dobsonville, Soweto, said Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale. Their arrest brings to five the number of people held in connection with the murder. 'Information led the team to a residence in Dobsonville, where the vehicle allegedly used by the suspects [on] the date of the murder was found. Further investigation led the law enforcement team to another residence where two firearms, one with [the] serial number filed off and the second belonging to the slain officer, were found,' Mogale said. She said the trio were traced by a multi-disciplinary team led by the Hawks' Vaal Rand and Pretoria-based serious organised crime investigation team, the national priority violent crime investigation unit, the JMPD, Ekurhuleni metropolitan police, provincial crime intelligence and the Gauteng provincial tracking team.

Two individuals appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court on May 15, 2025, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and unwrought gold valued at R16 million. Colonel Katlego Mogale, provincial spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), stated that a multi-disciplinary team, including the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime unit and the Gauteng SAPS Flying Squad, acted on a tip-off to successfully apprehend two suspects during an intelligence-led operation coordinated by the Germiston-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit. 'Acting on a tip-off, authorities intercepted a grey BMW reportedly travelling from the Free State to Gauteng, allegedly transporting unwrought gold meant for illegal trade.' Mogale explained that the authorities intercepted the targeted vehicle on the R21 and successfully stopped it. A thorough search of the vehicle and its occupants revealed a bag holding 80 gold bars, each weighing 100 grams, with a combined estimated value of R16 million. 'The pair could not furnish the officers with documentation to be transporting such materials and were subsequently arrested for unlawful possession of unwrought and possession of suspected stolen property,' she added. Daniel Schubert (61) and Adriaan Petrus du Plessis (49) appeared in court, but their fate remains uncertain as their case was postponed to May 22 for a formal bail hearing. Both men remain behind bars. Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, praised the team for their exceptional dedication and outstanding work in executing the operation. "The Hawks remain steadfast in their mission to dismantle illegal mining and smuggling networks. Criminals must understand that no one is beyond the reach of the law. We will continue to use every available resource to combat these unlawful activities that exploit our country's precious metals for personal gain," Kadwa emphasised. The Star [email protected]

Fake court documents scandal rocks Pretoria High Court

A Pretoria High Court employee is accused of enabling illegal stay in SA through fraudulent court documents. The allegations of fraudulent notices of motion issued by an employee of the High Court in Pretoria do not reflect on the failure of the justice system, according to experts. Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation spokesperson colonel Katlego Mogale said they conducted a search-and-seizure operation at the high court on Tuesday, following allegations that a court employee issued fraudulent notices of motion to illegal foreigners. Fraudulent notices to prevent deportation 'It is alleged the employee has been issuing fraudulent notices to undocumented foreign nationals to prevent their deportation. This matter was formally reported to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in March,' she said. Mogale said the search-and-seizure operation specifically targeted the individual believed to be central to the commission of these offences, adding exhibits were seized for further investigation. Political analyst Piet Croucamp said the fact that it happened at a court makes it seem more dramatic. ALSO READ: Are you the real Godfrey Lebeya? Fake Hawks head extorts more than R100k 'Not a reflection on the court of law' 'But it was just an administrative officer; it's not a reflection on the court of law. This is simply a misuse of administrative processes. There's a lot of corruption in immigration and deportation,' he said. Senior advocate specialising in criminal defence Johan Guam said it was concerning to read there was negligence on the personnel of the registers office. 'A motion notice is a process that's formally initiated through the office of the registrar to obtain relief from the high court and this is used to get illegal immigrants to stay in the country,' said Guam. 'If you are cited as an applicant or respondent in a motion procedure, you have to answer to that because you either have to obtain an order or interdict from the court against somebody or on your behalf.' corruption in immigration and border control Research specialist at the Institute for Human Rights and Criminal Justice Studies Anthony Minnaar said there was widespread corruption not only in courts, but also at Border Control Authority ports of entry and more specifically at the department of home affairs with regard to issuing false permits. 'South African ID cards and visa extensions for permanent residents are illegally issued by corrupt officials, especially in the more rural provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga,' said Minnaar. Rural criminologist Witness Maluleke questioned whether South Africa would ever be free of the alleged corrupt practices. 'The public service departments are becoming a circus. We often hear about the same normalised corrupt ways of living in South Africa, with limited deterrent actions seen from the police service,' he said. Pretoria High Court employee allegedly issuing documents to prevent deportation of foreigners

The Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation component conducted a search and seizure operation at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria following allegations that an employee was issuing fraudulent documents to illegal immigrants to prevent their deportation. The operation was conducted on Tuesday, 13 May. Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said it is alleged that the said employee has been issuing fraudulent notices of motion to undocumented foreign nationals to prevent their deportation to their countries of origin. Mogale said the matter was formally reported to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) in March 2025. 'This search and seizure operation specifically targeted one office and an individual believed to be central to the commission of these offences. Exhibits were seized for further investigation,' she said. Meanwhile, in April, the Department of Home Affairs confirmed an increase in the number of illegal immigrants deported from South Africa, which is the highest in the last five years. The number of deported illegal immigrants increased to 46 898 in the 2024/2025 financial year that ended on 31 March number surged by 18% compared to the previous year's 39 672. The Department said this is the highest number of deportations carried out in at least five years and is triple the number conducted in recent years. The performance of South Africa's Department of Home Affairs over the past year exceeds the number of deportations conducted by France (22 000) and Germany (20 000) combined over the same period. The total number of deportations for the past five years are as follows: 2020/2021: 14 859 2021/2022: 20 093 2022/2023: 22 560 2023/2024: 39 672 2024/2025: 46 898 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
