Home Affairs scandal: Seven arrested amid backlog issues
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has landed in hot water following investigations. The Serious Corruption Investigation component of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation arrested two more suspects. Authorities arrested seven people during an ongoing operation in KwaZulu-Natal.
The matter is regarding issuing fraudulent passports to undocumented foreign nationals. The DHA is allegedly involved in corruption, fraud, and contraventions of the Identification Act and Immigration Act.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, said preliminary investigations found citizens offered the DHA employees between R300 to R1000 in exchange for the unlawful services. He said the unlawful activities happened when the offices were closed.
The crimes were prevalent at Home Affairs offices in Isipingo, Durban Central and Eshowe. The Serious Corruption Investigation is probing the matter.
Meanwhile, seven of the accused appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes court. Philani Mmeli Zaca, Fumani 'Guru' Hlayisi, Zime Anita Shange, Bongiwe Kubheka, Thandiwe Pretty Khwela, Lungisani Siyanda Mzobe, and Lindokuhle Bongumusa Mpanza made their appearance. The court postponed the case to Friday, 20 June, for legal aid and a formal bail application. The court also remanded the accused in custody.
National Prosecuting Authority Regional Spokesperson for KZN Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the accused face numerous charges. They face charges of fraud, Contraventions of the Identification Act, 68 of 1997, diverse Contraventions of the Immigration Act, 13 of 2002 (as amended), and Corruption (accepting gratification).
The arrests follow allegations that at least a quarter of a million people are still waiting Home Affairs to process their late birth registration applications. The Children's Institute has filed a court application with the Western Cape High Court. This seeks to compel the DHA to act on the backlog.
The institute says the Home Affairs Department has affected the fundamental rights of children and their parents, and caregivers. As a result, it wants the court to order the DHA to develop a clear plan to deal with the backlog.

The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu has condemned the threats and intimidation directed at humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers while delivering lifesaving assistance to flood-affected communities in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. Mchunu said the Gift of the Givers has consistently been a source of hope and dignity to South Africans in their hour of need. 'Any attack on them is an attack on the very principle of ubuntu. No individual or group will be allowed to profiteer off disaster or compromise the safety and well-being of our people. Law enforcement will act decisively. 'The SAPS will ensure the safety of all humanitarian workers in the area, and hold those responsible fully accountable under the law. We have also been made aware of individuals who go to the homes of those who lost their lives due to these floods, with a view to committing acts of theft from these homes. Police have been deployed to ensure the safety of the property of the deceased.' In response, the OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape said it is appalled and deeply disturbed by the threats directed towards officials of the Gift of the Givers Foundation. 'We wish to state without fear that extortion is a crime and it is a moral betrayal of the highest order, especially when directed at those extending a hand to the helpless. Wanted criminal shot dead near Nigel in Ekurhuleni
A notorious criminal wanted for numerous armed robberies was shot dead near Nigel in Ekurhuleni yesterday. Ridge Times reports that Presby Linda Nyamakazi (49), known to pose as a labour relations inspector, committed various armed robberies. Nyamakazi's death followed a robbery of a butchery in Balfour earlier the same day. He allegedly fled the crime scene in a white Renault Sandero, but a private security officer spotted him in Nigel. The officer managed to stop the Sandero, but when he tried to arrest Nyamakazi, a confrontation ensued, and Nyamakazi was shot and killed. Nyamakazi's details and photos had been circulating over the past six months, and a 'be on the lookout' alert was sent out for him. In one of Nyamakazi's alleged latest crimes, a well-known business in Sundra was targeted last Friday. More robberies occurred in the following days. Nyamakazi used cloned vehicles and false registration plates to avoid detection, often switching cars between incidents. Vehicles used included a blue VW Polo, a white Renault Sandero and a red Ford Fiesta, some of which were regularly spotted in Delmas, Sundra and Eloff. According to a trustworthy source, who wanted to remain anonymous, Nyamakazi allegedly committed his first armed robbery at the age of 14. Various arrests for offences such as armed robbery, hijacking and impersonating a government official followed. He also spent time behind bars and was, at the time of his death, apparently on parole. White River shooting suspect appears in court under heightened security
A man linked to a shooting that left one person dead and another critically injured, near the White River Rugby Club in Mpumalana earlier this month, appeared in the White River Magistrate's Court this morning. Lowvelder reports that Marco Schalekamp (42) surrendered on June 17 and faces charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident on June 5, in which Pieter Burger died and Arno van Niekerk was injured. Schalekamp appeared in court this morning under heightened security. The case was postponed to June 25 amid concerns over his flight risk status and unresolved questions surrounding his background.
