7 Home Affairs officials arrested for contravention of Immigration and Identification Acts
Seven Department of Home Affairs (DHA) employees have been arrested in connection with issuing fraudulent passports to undocumented foreigners.
This forms part of an ongoing operation run by the Serious Corruption Investigation component of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in Pretoria.

The operation emanates from a complaint by the DHA relating to the issuance of fraudulent passports.
Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale explained that allegations included corruption, fraud and contravention of the Identification Act and Immigration Act.
The crimes reportedly took place between February 2020 and July 2023, with the facilitation of fraudulent passports from DHA offices in Durban, specifically the Commercial Street branch.
'These unlawful activities took place outside regular business hours, including evenings, weekends and on public holidays when the DHA offices were officially closed,' said Mogale.
'Preliminary investigations by the DHA confirmed that local citizens [were] offered R300 to R1 000 in exchange for their co-operation, especially at DHA offices in Isipingo, Durban Central and eShowe, resulting in a case being opened for investigation.'
To date, 38 people have been arrested between September 2022 and now, seven of whom are DHA officials and 31 private citizens, explained Mogale.
He said 24 individuals – four of them DHA officials – were convicted and sentenced to a combined 310 years' imprisonment.
'The remaining five suspects were arrested by the Serious Corruption Investigation on Saturday in various parts of Durban and will face charges of corruption, fraud, contravention of the Immigration Act and contravention of the Identification Act,' he said.

The seven suspects arrested in connection with the issuing of fraudulent passports have been remanded in custody after appearing in court on Tuesday. The group allegedly facilitated the fraudulent acquisition of South African passports by foreign nationals at the department's offices in Durban, specifically the Commercial Street branch. 'Preliminary investigations by the [department] confirmed that the criminal activities were indeed conducted on off hours, where the local citizens offered R300 to R1 000 in exchange for their cooperation – especially at offices in Isipingo, Durban Central and Eshowe – resulting in a case being opened for investigation by Serious Corruption Investigation,' Mogale added. Arrests since 2022 To date, a total of 38 suspects have been arrested in connection with this matter since September 2022. Seven of them are Home Affairs officials, while 31 are private citizens. She added that the Hawks are not ruling out the possibility of more suspects being arrested. Seven suspects appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday for their alleged connection to a fraudulent passport syndicate. The accused— Mmeli Philani Trevor Zaca-Dlamini, Thandiwe Pretty Khwela, Zime Anita Shange, Fumani Hlayisi, Bongiwe Kubheka, Lindokuhle Bongumusa Mpanza, and Lungisani Siyanda Mzobe—face serious charges involving illegal passport issuance. The provincial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said the suspects allegedly worked with employees from the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to process fraudulent passport applications at various offices in KwaZulu-Natal. "These applications were allegedly processed after hours, during the night, on weekends and on public holidays when the DHA offices were closed," said Ramkisson-Kara. Ramkisson-Kara added that the fraudulent passports were processed for undeserving foreign nationals using the particulars of South African citizens who are lawful holders of identity documents but do not have passports. Confirmed: 10 fatalities in tragic R34 bus accident
Transport MEC Siboniso Duma confirms there were 10 fatalities – revised from 12 – from the tragic accident on the R34 between Vryheid and Ulundi early this morning (Tuesday). 'First and foremost, we wish to express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this morning's horrific accident involving a truck and a bus on the R34, Vryheid,' said Duma, after visiting the scene. 'I have also personally conveyed our sympathies to Marshall Dlamini, the secretary-general of the EFF. Innocent lives have been lost, and the lives of many families have been altered and turned upside down.' Duma said he inspected the scene of the accident, witnessing the trail of destruction left behind. 'Reduced visibility in the early hours of the morning and dismembered body parts resulted in miscalculation by RTI and emergency personnel,' said Duma. After Duma's interaction with Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and SAPS, the following was confirmed: 10 dead – 3 women and 7 men; 33 victims able to walk; 33 injured but not critical; two critical. 'We have visited mortuaries and hospitals. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to Dundee Mortuary. The truck and bus drivers are alive and in hospitals.' Investigation Duma said the SAPS and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) will conduct a comprehensive investigation to establish the cause of the accident, having received conflicting versions about what happened from the survivors. 'There are allegations that the bus driver tried to overtake. Other survivors have alleged that the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel. We do not want to speculate at this stage. We are confident that the investigation will shed light. 'We have in the past expressed our concerns about accidents involving trucks. Trucks are not supposed to be on this road in the first place and should be using the N2. Many innocent lives have been lost as a result of a huge number of trucks on our roads. 'We have been informed by Transnet that in the 2024 financial year, over 303 000 trucks used the Port of Richards Bay, averaging nearly 6 000 per week. It has been stated that the port's infrastructure was originally designed for a much smaller volume of trucks, approximately 200 per day. 'We continue to receive briefings from Transport Minister Barbra Creecy about efforts to resuscitate the rail network.
