How the ABT housing programme is transforming South Africa's housing landscape

The Alternative Building Technology (ABT) housing programme, supported by the National Home Builders Registration Council and the Department of Human Settlements, has been hailed for its potential to accelerate the construction of RDP houses and temporary shelters for disaster relief.
Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane praised the ABT initiative during her visit to the Eric Molobi Innovation Hub in Soshanguve, a facility launched in 2005 to develop innovative building methods.
She said the project aims to help the department explore affordable, weather-resistant housing solutions in response to the country's increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
She highlighted examples of various materials tested at the innovation hub, noting that some houses built with these materials have withstood durability tests for nearly 20 years, demonstrating their strength and resilience.
'They are water-resistant, fire-resistant, and off the grid; they can provide lighting. They are also suitable for climate response and also they have to withstand the harshness of the weather when it is hot and when it is cool they are able to retain the heat taking the temperature that is outside the building,' Simelane said.
She explained that the government no longer wants a situation where it rushes people to temporary residential units during disasters, only to pay for a short-term solution, when in reality, some people may end up living in the temporary units for 10 years or more.

She said with the ABT the government is able to build a water-resistant house in about 10 days to two weeks, depending on the size.
This, she said, allows the government to move people in permanently, reducing emergency costs and speeding up our housing delivery.
The rollout of ABT houses is currently prioritised in provinces such as Kwa-Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, North West, and Free State.
'You will remember that the weather patterns are not necessarily the same. So, the strength, durability, and tests we are conducting in the weather of the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are likely to yield different outcomes,' Simelane said.
Tamlyn Bouwer, CEO of the National Home Builders Registration Council, said the entity's aim is to promote the potential of ABT, which can help address South Africa's housing backlog and provide quick shelter solutions during disasters.
She said: 'There is research around these technologies and how they assist in terms of the housing backlog. And also in times of disaster they can assist so that we quicken the time that our citizens can be helped with adequate shelters.'
Vusi Hartley, acting building specialist, noted that ABT houses are constructed using alternative materials such as plastics and prefabricated boards.
According to him, the initiative's goal was to accelerate the construction of RDP houses using innovative materials.
He said that several building systems have failed to gain traction due to concerns over their durability and longevity.

Search for missing pilot to resume on Friday after aircraft crash off Durban beach

Image: DOCTOR NGCOBO / Independent Newspapers The search for a missing pilot will resume on Friday morning after a light aircraft crashed into the ocean near Battery Beach on Thursday afternoon. This is according to update provided by ALS Paramedics. The light aircraft had been participating in an airshow linked to the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Summit, which was being hosted at the Durban International Convention Centre this week. The summit is the third annual global meeting organised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). The Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) said the crash occurred near Suncoast Casino at approximately 13:45pm. 'The accident occurred at approximately 13:45 when the ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft that was performing its final display crashed into the sea,' the AIID said in a media statement. Pictures from the scene showed that wreckage from the plane had been recovered. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said he went to the crash scene immediately after receiving the report. 'I was received by the Director of SA Civil Aviation Authority, Ms Poppy Khoza and her team,' Duma said. 'Ms Khoza informed me that the authority's Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has taken over and will be conducting an extensive investigation to establish the causes of the accident. Polokwane woman finally receives title deed after six-year wait
POLOKWANE – Kgaugelo Malebana (62), a retired temporary worker, finally received the title deed to her RDP house in Extension 133, Polokwane, six years after it was first awarded to her. The title deed was handed over by the Minister of Human Settlements and former Polokwane mayor, Thembi Simelane, during a ceremony that formed part of her department's national Title Deeds Friday Campaign. Malebana expressed mixed emotions about the milestone, raising concerns over basic service delivery in her area. She told the minister that while she appreciated finally owning her home, a lack of water and electricity in her yard and surrounding homes makes it difficult to celebrate fully. 'Electricity and municipal rates are very expensive. I am retired and not working. If these services remain unaffordable or unavailable, I may be forced to sell,' she said frankly. The handover formed part of a two-day oversight visit by the Minister and her deputy, Tandi Mahambehlala, to assess Limpopo's progress in delivering sustainable human settlements and achieving national 2025/26 targets. Simelane was joined by Human Settlements MECs from other provinces and local executive mayors. The campaign specifically focused on handing over title deeds to senior citizens between 60 and 70 years old in honour of Women's Month. Simelane urged beneficiaries not to sell their properties, warning that this has been a common issue with RDP housing programmes. 'These homes are assets that must be protected and passed on to future generations,' she said.
