Iran's possible closure of Strait of Hormuz to affect Iraqi oil exports

Iran's possible closure of Strait of Hormuz to affect Iraqi oil exports

Iraqi News8 hours ago

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq will need to find alternatives to continue its seaborne oil shipments if Iran decides to close the Strait of Hormuz because of the recent developments in its war with Israel, which recently involved a US strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Iran has vowed to shut a vital oil shipping channel in retribution for the deadly strikes carried out by the United States on three of its nuclear facilities, a decision that could have a significant impact on the world economy.
The Iranian parliament decided on Sunday to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane responsible for transporting 20 percent of the world's oil and gas, in response to the US military operation known as 'Midnight Hammer.'
According to Iranian media, the parliament's decision is not binding, and the ultimate decision must be made by senior Iranian security authorities.
If Iran refused access to big tankers that transport oil and gas to major countries in Asia and Europe, oil prices would skyrocket, potentially destabilizing the world's economy.
The Iraqi Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, confirmed that Iraq's oil production and exports have not been affected.
Iraq relies mostly on the Strait of Hormuz to transit the majority of its oil exports. Any disruption to this route might have major consequences for both Iraq's economy and the global energy market.

Telegram Channel Supporting Iran-Backed Iraqi Militias Issues Threats To Israel's Dimona Nuclear Reactor, Condemns Use Of Jordanian And Iraqi Airspace During U.S. Strikes As 'Eternal Disgrace': Iraqi

On June 21, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered strikes on Iran as American B-2 bombers struck Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The U.S. entry into the conflict against Iran comes more than a week after Israel launched a June 13 pre-emptive strike on Iran, targeting its nuclear program and key military leaders. The following week brought mutual airstrikes between Iran and Israel, which elicited a burst of threats by Iran-backed proxies in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, against U.S. military bases and personnel across the region, including action to block international maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab Al-Mandab.[1] Iranian Surface-To-Air Missile 358 And Missile 359 "Lurk, [Looking] For" Israeli Reconnaissance And Refueling Aircraft Over Iraqi Airspace On June 21, the "Naya" Telegram channel, which supports Iran-backed militias in Iraq, cited an unidentified source in the Iraqi resistance factions warning that Iraqi airspace could become "an unsafe area for hostile Zionist aircraft," namely, slower aircraft such as refueling planes, airborne radar system Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), and SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) aircraft, and various kinds of freight planes and drones. According to the channel, Iranian surface-to-air missiles, type 358 and 359, continue to "lurk, looking for enemy aircraft on Iraqi territory."[2] Jordan Is Israel's Gatekeeper In the aftermath of the U.S. strikes and ensuing retaliatory attacks by Iran against multiple areas in Israel, the channel reported the presence of U.S. aircraft over Jordanian airspace and that sirens sounded in neighboring Jordan. In this regard, the channel condemned the Kingdom's position and indirect involvement in the war, by allegedly intercepting missiles over Jordanian airspace. A cartoon features King Abdullah II of Jordan, portraying him as a goalkeeper in an Israeli jersey stamped with the Star of David, trying to intercept a missile. The net behind him shows the goalkeeper had conceded a few "goals," hinting at Iran's success in reaching its targets, regardless of Jordan's involvement.[3] Use Of Jordanian and Iraqi Airspace During Operation Midnight Hammer Is "A Source Of Eternal Disgrace" On June 22, the channel shared a graphic showing the timeline of aircraft deployed to carry out U.S. military's Operation Midnight Hammer. Commenting, the channel argued that aircraft flying over the Jordanian and Iraqi airspace is a source of "eternal disgrace" to both countries.[4] Threat To Southern Israel: "The Strikes Will Continue" Telegram channel "Naya" shared a short video in Persian showing what appears to be a 3D aerial photograph of the nuclear reactor in Dimona in southern Israel. The accompanying text described Dimona as "one of the most sensitive Zionist military infrastructure facilities," and warned Israeli "settlers" to "leave the occupied land immediately." The strikes will continue," the channel declared.[5]

Arab Journalists and Liberals Praise U.S. Strike On Iran: The Iranian Threat Is Over; Trump Saved Humanity; God Bless America

The June 22, 2025 U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear facilities was met with approval and satisfaction by many Arab journalists and liberals, who took to X to express their support for it. Some thanked U.S. President Donald Trump, saying he had "made history" and "saved humanity" from the nuclear threat posed by the Iranian regime. Others expressed hope for the downfall of this regime, and several mocked Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, calling on him to surrender unconditionally or else face a grim fate. It should be mentioned that some of these writers also expressed support for Israel's attack on Iran, launched on June 13, stating that this country was not defending only itself but the entire Middle East.[1] Below is a sampling of these reactions on X welcoming the U.S. strike on Iran. Saudi Journalist: The Iranian Threat Is Gone Saudi journalist Abd al-Aziz Al-Khames wrote: "The dream, the danger and the Iranian nuclear project have come to an end for a long time. Iran wasted billions that went down the drain at the expense of its people's livelihood. Will reason prevail, with Iran launching an economic development project instead of a military one of nukes and missiles?"[2] Saudi Journalist: Some Regimes Are A Burden On Humanity And Their Downfall Is A Chance For Salvation In a series of posts on June 22, Saudi journalist Wafa Al-Rashid implicitly supported the overthrow of the Iranian regime, writing: 'Sometimes the fall [of a regime] is not a threat but an opportunity for salvation'; '[Tolerating] the continued existence of some regimes is not political neutrality but a conspiracy against humanity'; 'Some regimes are not only a burden on their own people but on all of humanity! They feed on oppression, export chaos, impoverish the world and destroy the people. Their existence is not a 'sovereign decision' but a danger to the future of the world.'[3] Egyptian Liberal: Death To Khamenei, The Supreme Clown Amr Bakly, an Egyptian liberal based in the U.S., shared an image of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a clown and added "death to Khemenei."[4] Egyptian Liberal: President Trump Has Made History Again; God Bless America Egyptian liberal researcher Dalia Ziada, who also lives in the U.S., wrote in English: "President Trump has made history in the Middle East… for the second time. God bless America! I pray this will trigger the geopolitical reset that the Middle East has been craving since 1979. In case you are wondering, the first time president Trump made history in the Middle East was the Abraham Accords in 2020".[5] Emirati Liberal: This Is The Taste Of Victory; God Bless America Emirati liberal Amjad Taha posted in praise of Trump and the U.S. attack, writing in English: "To those still struggling with English or math: the U.S. won. Israel won. The Islamist in Iran lost. The Middle East just took its first breath of fresh, non-radioactive air. Trump didn't just send missiles, he sent a message. No nukes. No bullies. No threats to America's allies, especially Israel. This wasn't just war. This was diplomacy with a spine, a masterclass in keeping promises and crushing bad deals. Fordo was flattened. Natanz was neutralized. Esfahan was erased. These weren't peace-loving labs. They were ticking bombs. And now, they're gone with precision. Trump said it best, and for once, the whole world nodded. 'Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier.' And guess what? People from Tel Aviv to Texas, from Erbil to Rome, celebrated with one voice and a few B2 vitamins just for fun. Because when evil plans fall, good people rise. Moral of the story? Never bring uranium to a superpower fight. Always keep B2 handy. Apparently, it's what victory tastes like. God bless America. God save lives. As for Tehran's hardliners, someone please bring them chamomile tea, a therapist, and a globe. It's time they realize the world isn't flat, and it doesn't revolve around them. In the end, peace isn't given. It's earned, protected, and sometimes enforced. And those who chase destruction always forget.. justice doesn't knock. It lands."[6] Iraqi Journalist: Iran And Its Agents Must Be Eliminated; Trump Saved Humanity Iraqi journalist Sufian Al-Samarrai, chair of the Iraqi news website Baghdad Post, wrote after the U.S. strike on Iran: "Israel and the U.S. are waiting for retaliation by Iran, its agents in the region and the terror organizations. [Such retaliation] is needed in order to justify the elimination of these terror gangs and so that humanity can live in peace." In another post he wrote: "[Trump] did it along with the Lord of the World and saved humanity from the nuclear [program] of the extremist Nazi Islam." In a third post he shared an animated video mocking Khamenei, and commented: "Nobody [in the Iranian leadership] is left except for Khamenei, and now, if he does not declare his surrender, he will meet the same fate as [the nuclear facilities in] Natanz, Fordo and Isfahan. This is America's basic demand, and its first requirement is unconditional surrender."[7] Bahraini Liberal: This Is A Historic Turning Point; The Rule Of The Jurisprudent Will No Longer Threaten The Middle East Bahraini liberal Ahdeya Ahmed Al-Sayed wrote: "The U.S. has managed to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities in Fordo. This strike put an end to the efforts of Khamenei's regime to attain nuclear power. It is a historic turning point that will transform the Middle East, [leading to] a future in which the terror of the 'rule of the jurisprudent' [i.e., the Iranian regime] no longer threatens the region. With this step America fulfilled its obligation and put an end to the matter."[8] Emirati Political Analyst: The Iranian Regime Is Paying The Price Of Its Folly Emirati political analyst Salem Al-Ketbi posted: "The Israel-Iran war will go down in the annals of history as one of those moments of political folly that repeatedly [characterize] dictatorial regimes which do not understand the discrepancy between their own [capabilities] and the military and technological prowess of Isael… History will not spare those who refuse to develop but persist in a policy of collective suicide… The lesson is clear to all: he who does not learn from the past, [his history] will be written by bombs [that fall] on his soil in the present."[9]

Pro-Kremlin Russian Military Correspondent Yurii Kotenok: 'It's Very Likely That After Iran, They Will Be After... Us!'

Pro-Kremlin Russian military correspondent Yuri Petrovich Kotenok, whose Telegram channel has over 360,000 subscribers, analyzed the Iran-Israel war. In his Telegram posts, Kotenok stated that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) proved impotent in matters of defense. He then added: "Provided the world plan-maker goes further, trying to change the [Iranian] regime, it's very likely that after Iran they will be after... us! The temptation is great – Russia is encircled.' Russian military correspondent Yuri Petrovich Kotenok. (Source: Tsargrad TV) The following is a translation of Kotenok's Telegram posts:[1] "The IRGC... Has Proved Impotent In Matters Of Defense" "1. Iran is trying to respond to Israel, but the enemy methodically destroys not just military infrastructure, but infrastructure in general. An analysis of military actions between Israel and Iran evidence that Tehran, surprisingly, did not invest in air defence, did not build it, however, as well as the Air Force. Iran was investing in missiles. "2. It appears that Israel, contrary to the media, has not yet succeeded in destroying the stockpile of Iranian missiles (warehouses) that was accumulated over the past years. It is difficult to reach them [hidden] in the rocks. Israelis try to block the entrances to missile stockpiles carved in mountains with strikes; they also hit teams trying to clear the rubble in the adits. "3. There is a roughly similar case with the very same nuclear facilities. The main ones have not been destroyed by the enemy. Provided the Zionists cannot not reach the target, they carry out accompanying strikes: They take down electricity [systems] to block the facility, curb its operational possibility, etc. "4. There is no evidence of Iran's air defense system working. Perhaps the military bureaucracy is to blame for all of this and/or, considering the example of the gaps in Tehran's defense, the idiocy of the IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps], which grabbed all the functions of the state, from selling [illegal] drugs to providing security for the elites and cities. Tehran was guarded only by the IRGC, and now Tehran has to endure [the Israeli strikes]... IRGC, this omnipotent structure, which infiltrated all institutions of the country's economic and political life, has proved impotent in matters of defense. "5. Meanwhile, Iran continues to launch missiles, showing that it has the power and means to terrify Israel, which gives Iran credit. "6. Iran's saturation with Zionist agents, which are involved [in Israel's operation] has its effect. Unfortunately, Iran turned out to be not ready for war, having lost the support of Hizbullah and Hamas. The very same Houthis, possessing territory and forces much smaller than Iran, managed to build a system [of operations], fought and 'bit' to the last and, in general, remained with what they had. Despite the fact that two U.S. carrier strike groups and some of their allies were fighting them. Both even suffered some losses." "If The Iranian Regime Collapses, A Monstrous Migration Blow Will Be Dealt To Armenia, Azerbaijan, And Through Them, No Doubt, To Russia" "7. If Iran were willing to fight to the last man, like the Houthis, to inflict defeat on the enemy, coordinating strikes across the Iranian network, the situation would look different by now. The problem is that Tehran has buried this network with its own hands over the last two to three years – it allowed Hamas and Hizbullah to be defeated and the Assad regime to fall. Unfortunately, the IRGC is to blame for this too. This power structure has infiltrated all institutions of political and economic life, trying to pass all political and non-political solutions, and as a result has drowned in its own bureaucracy. And now the losses in the army and navy are far from that of the IRGC. And the army continues to strike Israel. "8. Trump has claimed that [Israel's] dominance has been established in Iranian airspace. It is very likely that the US will directly participate in the conflict, conducting strikes because Iran's air force has been virtually destroyed. We can with high probability expect an attempt at regime change in Iran. Trump is already demanding capitulation. "9. With such tendencies, Iran will be defeated. And the situation, in my opinion, will not be changed by Pakistan's promises to intervene in the conflict. So far, with our very eyes we see attempts at dismantling China's main asset – Iran. "10. If the Iranian regime collapses, a monstrous migration blow will be dealt to Armenia, Azerbaijan, and through them, no doubt, to Russia. "11. Provided the world plan-maker goes further, trying to change the [Iranian] regime, it is very likely that after Iran they will be after... us! The temptation is great – Russia is encircled. They will subvert the internal situation, creating challenges and threats along the border. They will try to continuously penetrate the border in batches of several tens of thousands of refugees. This will lead to excesses at the border territories, which will resonate throughout the country. "12. There is nothing good that the ancient Persian civilization is being crushed before our eyes. It is the most intelligent, softest, the most non-confrontational of Muslim civilizations with the deepest history. The state in which it now exists is in danger of collapse. Unfortunately, Iran has practically no moves left that could confound the enemy. Joint missile attacks, on which Tehran was counting, are currently only possible with the help of Yemen, and even then, will have a limited scale. At the moment, Iran can do little, alas... only fight to the last..."
