
Approach to AFLW's 10th season suggests some remain unconvinced of its value
The AFL has faced criticism this season for its new broadcast deal which has given Saturday's men's matches exclusively to Foxtel in Victoria, in an attempt to increase Thursday night coverage on Seven.
While Seven is still finalising its programming, only the season-opening Thursday night double-header of Carlton v Collingwood followed by West Coast v Gold Coast, as well as Sunday afternoon slots, are set be shown to Victorians on Seven's main channel over the first three rounds.
The qualified support for the women's code from Seven comes as AFL head office seeks to accelerate growth in a competition entering its tenth season, and address negative perceptions about the AFLW.
On Tuesday, the AFL chief executive, Andrew Dillon, rejected the language used in a story in the Age earlier this month which claimed the AFL told clubs at a CEOs' meeting that the AFLW was 'losing $50m' each year.
'That's certainly not a line that's ever been run by the AFL, we have a big investment in AFLW, but it's an investment absolutely worth making,' Dillon said. 'You can talk about direct profit and losses, but I think what's also important when you look at a competition like AFLW, [are] the indirect benefits that we have from having an elite women's competition.'
The comments appeared to be a stern response to a persistent rhetoric from some in the AFL industry who see the women's competition as a waste of resources. Dillon said people shouldn't forget the impact of the AFLW on helping clubs win grants to build new clubrooms, attract new sponsors and retain female fans.
This year will see the men's and women's seasons overlap, triggering a first-ever 18-match mega round. Last AFLW season began during the AFL's pre-finals bye weekend, but this year's first round coincides with round 23 of the AFL. However, the women's competition will still be be prominent on free-to-air, with 11 of 27 matches over the first three rounds screened on Seven and 7plus nationally. All matches until the finals are shown on Foxtel/Kayo.
Dillon this week highlighted the progress in AFLW, given it was conceived barely more than a decade ago: 'If you'd said that we would be here 10 or 11 years later with 18 teams with 30 players, being the [league with the] most professional female athletes employed in Australia, and the fourth-highest combined salary cap of any sport in Australia – men's or women's – I would have said you were crazy.'
But when asked for his reflections on the league's priorities, he instead offered a nostalgic perspective of the early years, when fans came to largely unticketed venues in their droves.
'If we can make that match-day experience as compelling, as engaging maybe as it was in years one and two where there was just so much joy in the game … ' he began saying at an AFL summit of hundreds of club staff on Tuesday, before amending his language. ' … Not that there's not [joy today], but I think that's something if we can rediscover that – I wouldn't say it's a hidden gem because it's really well known – but I think that we've got a really solid base from which we can grow.'

About 200,000 attended the 29 matches in the first season in 2017, including almost 25,000 to Carlton v Collingwood at Ikon Park for the historic opening match. The inaugural season had an average crowd of close to 7,000 according to website Austadiums. Last year, 108 fully ticketed matches attracted more than 290,000 fans, but at an average of less than 3,000 a match.
The competition now appears better set up for the longer term. The league is now settled into its late winter/spring window. The compressed fixture of last year has been scrapped, and matches in 2025 have been given traditional timeslots. There are no midweek fixtures and there has been an effort to build rituals into the season such as Indigenous round and Pride , as well as capitalising on the men's grand final week when the Geelong women play at home on Thursday night before four AFLW matches in Melbourne on the Friday public holiday.
Despite the hopes of some players and the construction of new change rooms at the MCG, there will be no double-headers with the AFL. Rather, officials are trusting that the athleticism and skill of AFLW athletes, some who have now played for 10 seasons, together with a refined marketing strategy will be enough draw more fans to mostly suburban grounds, and offer a television product that repays the faith of Channel Seven.
'It will be really interesting to see how the two-week overlap goes this year in terms of attendance at games and viewership,' Dillon. 'But I feel it's a competition and it's a game that deserves its own time and its time to shine.'

Excelling in … Excel? Inside the high-stakes, secretive world of competitive spreadsheeting
Six years ago, Melbourne-based film-maker Kristina Kraskov read an article about an international Microsoft Excel competition and had two thoughts. The first: 'What the hell, that can't be real.' The second: 'There's got to be a film about this – I want to watch it so badly.' There wasn't a film about competitive spreadsheeting, so Kraskov decided to make it herself. The subject appealed to the director, whose work captures 'different inner worlds that are a bit unusual on the outside', including a short film titled Party in the Back, about a mullet festival. Spreadsheet Champions, which will screen at the Melbourne international film festival, follows six young competitors from around the world as they head to Florida for the 2023 Microsoft Office Specialist world championship to showcase their skills. It might sound silly, but Excel is an incredibly sophisticated application – according to the documentary, the average person uses only 10-15% of its capabilities, but would-be competitors are required to understand closer to 70% of what it can do. The competition is built and run by Certiport, a performance-based examination provider, and officially endorsed by Microsoft. It's a two-parter: the first half tests proficiency in formulas, functions and features through a series of complex questions, graded on both accuracy and speed. The second section is a more creative application of this knowledge – as Kraskov puts it, 'understanding the story of the data, or the soul of what it is actually telling you'. The championship has run since 2002 and is open to students between the ages of 13 and 22. Each competitor first has to qualify as the best in their home country. For such an esoteric endeavour, the stakes are oddly high – the MOS championship only allows competitors to enter once in their lives. 'In most sporting competitions, you have your main players that come back every year and your very set rivalries – but for this competition, they can only compete once, so everyone that's coming through can never come back,' Kraskov says. 'They qualify in their home countries at vastly different times around the world, so it made it really challenging for us – but as soon as anyone qualified in a country that we could go to, we would talk to them on Zoom, and work our way down from there.' The six competitors in Spreadsheet Champions are Alkimini, 20, from Greece; Braydon, 16, from Australia; Carmina, 16, from Guatemala; De La Paix, 19, from Cameroon (who doesn't have a laptop or wifi, so had to study at school); Mason, 15, from the US; and Nam, 21, from Vietnam. Each contestant has personality quirks which shine through in the film – from the camera-shy and stereotypically 'nerdy' to the charismatic and boisterous. 'Our intention is really about how amazing this competition is – we're not here to make fun of or disparage anyone,' Kraskov says. Kraskov and the film's producer, Anna Charalambous, spent about a week with each competitor in their home country, observing their day-to-day lives, from home to school, and spending time with their family and friends. 'People reveal themselves a lot if you just pay attention to how they live their lives,' Kraskov says. 'Teenagers are not quite fully formed adults yet, so they don't really connect things about themselves or their personalities – they just live their lives. The parents were so insightful and knowledgable about their kids – it gave us a lot of information about how they would potentially thrive or struggle, and who they really were.' Many of the contest's specifics are shrouded in secrecy, which posed another challenge for the film-makers. The competition is overseen by a man named – in a wonderful example of nominative determinism – Bing. 'It's so high-level security,' Kraskov says. 'Bing eventually trusted us and gave us questions that would be retired … At the end of the day, he has to deliver a hardcore, secure, world-expert level exam the next year, and our priority is to show the complexity of what it is and what they're doing.' Participating in the MOS Championship can set these kids up for adult life. Carmina, the Guatemalan competitor, is now 18 and studying mechatronics engineering at university. In the film, she is shown as a bubbly, bright teenager who loves One Direction (she still does) and excels at, well, Excel. Watching the documentary transported Carmina back to the competition and her younger self – and made her realise what she took from the experience. 'I knew the results already, but watching it again [I felt] a little bit of suspense,' she says. 'I tend to doubt a little bit of myself and with that experience [of competing] I learned to just go into it and try things out … It helped me a lot.' Spreadsheet Champions had its world premiere at SXSW in Texas earlier this year and five of the six students will be in Melbourne to attend Miff. Kraskov is proud to shine a light on them – everyday people doing something a little different with their lives. 'Celebrities, musicians and models get plenty of attention,' she says. 'But people that dedicate their lives to things that a lot of people don't care about – I find that so much more fascinating.' Going to waste: two years after REDcycle's collapse, Australia's soft plastics are hitting the environment hard
Two years on from REDcycle's collapse, 94% of Australia's soft plastics are still headed for landfill. Collection has restarted at supermarkets, and 42 warehouses of plastics have been cleared, but experts say the packaging industry must take responsibility for the mess. By July, supermarkets had mostly cleared the stockpiles, which by November 2022 reached 11,000 tonnes of soft plastics at 44 sites across the country, hoards accumulated as collections outstripped available recycling capacity and export restrictions increased the amount of plastic waste in Australia. The remainder – 3,500 tonnes at two sites, in Victoria and in South Australia – is due to be processed in the first half of 2026, according to the supermarket members of the Soft Plastics Taskforce. But as more than 100 new collection points have been rolled out since June in selected Woolworths, Coles and Aldi stores across New South Wales and Victoria, taskforce members have been careful not to collect more than can be processed. 'The biggest challenge still remains that there is simply not enough soft plastic recycling capacity in Australia to support full, nationwide collections,' a spokesperson for the taskforce told the Guardian. Soft plastic is defined by its ability to be scrunched into a ball, unlike 'rigid' plastics, which are moulded to hold their shape. Even at the peak of its operations in 2022, REDcycle was collecting about 7,500 tonnes – less than 2% of the 538,000 tonnes of plastic bags, food wrappers, bubble wrap and other 'flexible' plastic waste produced in Australia each year. 'We still have a real problem in that we consume too much [soft plastics], we discard too much and we don't buy back anywhere near enough,' says Gayle Sloan, the chief executive of the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia. While recyclers are increasing their capacity to process the material, Sloan says other problems remain: the vast quantities produced, design packaging that is too complex to recover and the lack of demand from packaging companies and other consumers for Australian-made recycled plastic. She says the onus should be on plastic manufacturers to invest in facilities to take back their own material. 'We've got to stop putting it on consumers to solve the problem.' Despite national packaging targets set by governments in 2018 for 70% of plastic packaging to be recycled by 2025, only about 6% of used and discarded soft plastics were being baled, sorted, shredded, washed, melted – or chemically processed – and turned into new products, according to data published in December by Soft Plastics Stewardship Australia. The rest has headed to landfill. Consumer plastics collected by households, while the most visible, are only one part of the story. Soft plastics are embedded in so many aspects of modern life, says David Hodge, the managing director of recycling company Plastic Forests. The material is widely used, for example, in sectors such as agriculture for storing grain and preventing weeds, and in transport for wrapping pallets. Consumer materials, particularly those used for foods – frozen produce bags, cereal liners or bread bags – are 'tremendously hard to recycle, some of them impossible', he says. They are often 'super technical', comprising different types of plastic, and contaminated by inks used for advertising, or food residues. While there is value for recyclers in processing plastics, such as PET (or polyethylene terephthalate) in drink bottles collected in container deposit schemes, Hodge says 'the economics is broken in soft plastics' because the energy, labor and transport required to collect, process and recycle them costs more than importing new materials. The lack of incentives or mandates for products made from recycled content – such as fence posts and garden edging, electrical cable cover and plastic sheeting – mean they often struggled to compete with non-recycled products. 'There has to be support for the purchase of products. That will create the pull through,' Hodge says. 'Bunnings needs to be given a federal government mandate to support Australian made recycled products,' he says as an example. Jennifer Macklin, a researcher at Monash University's Sustainable Development Institute, says the solutions to the soft plastics problem are similar to other material and waste challenges. They include designing plastic packaging so it can be more easily recycled (while retaining its function, such as keeping food fresh), developing recycling infrastructure capable of turning large volumes of soft plastic waste into a usable material and – crucially – reinforcing demand for the recovered material. 'That's the big chicken and egg that we have with recycling,' Macklin says. 'We're quite good at collecting and reprocessing but not very good at buying it to turn it into new things.' Consumers have a role to play, she says, but as a general principle producers and importers of plastics should be responsible for the material's entire lifecycle. In late 2024, the federal government consulted on options for reforming plastic packaging. According to its summary, 80% of stakeholders supported regulation, and 65% supported an extended responsibility scheme that would make plastics producers responsible for the entire product lifecycle. The government is now 'working with industry and state and territory governments to deliver fit-for-purpose packaging regulations as part of Australia's transition to a circular economy', a departmental spokesperson said. Sloan says voluntary approaches have failed. 'We need to have clear design standards and they need to be enforceable, and we actually need those who make this to be held accountable and invest in facilities to take it back,' she says. 'We've got to stop putting products out on the market that have no home and can't be recovered.'

Revealed: The tour where British and Irish Lions decided to take on Australian Rules Football teams in their own backyard
As the British and Irish Lions prepare to take on the Wallabies in the third and final Test tonight, Daily Mail Australia remembers the time the Lions came down under and tried to beat the Aussies at their own game. On June 16, 1888, more than 22,000 people packed the Melbourne Cricket Ground to watch Carlton take on a touring British rugby team under Victorian Rules. This was no ordinary football match. The visitors were a hand-picked squad of English, Irish and Scottish rugby players, later recognised as the first British and Irish Lions, attempting to master a code they had never played competitively. Their sixth game of the tour was their first under Victorian Rules and it immediately captured the public imagination. The tour itself was a bold commercial gamble. Cricketing entrepreneurs Arthur Shrewsbury, Alfred Shaw and James Lillywhite organised a 54-match schedule across Australia and NZ, mixing rugby union fixtures with matches under Australian football rules. The aim was to keep the tourists playing and earning gate takings across a long stay in the colonies. In Victoria, Australian Rules dominated the sporting scene and the organisers knew local clubs could deliver large crowds. Matches between the British tourists and the strongest Victorian Football Association teams promised both novelty and revenue. The English players were not without preparation. In New Zealand, they had been given instruction in the basics of Victorian Rules by local players PG McShane and J Lawler, but the differences between the codes were stark. Victorian football was faster, more open and far more reliant on accurate kicking, positional marking and quick handball. Rugby players were used to rucks, mauls and forward drives, not the constant movement and aerial contests of the Australian game. Carlton, reigning VFA premiers, wasted no time in showing the gap. The locals outpaced and out-thought the visitors, who played with spirit but little tactical cohesion. The Age remarked that the British 'worked harder but achieved less,' while the Bendigo Advertiser was blunt in its view that the tourists did not understand the game. Carlton won comfortably by 14 goals to 3, but the grit of the Englishmen and the spectacle of the contest kept the crowd engaged. Four days later, the tourists travelled to Bendigo and shocked the locals with a 5 to 1 victory. They followed this with a 3-3 draw in Castlemaine, showing signs that they were quickly adapting to the game. In South Australia they initially struggled against the strong Adelaide clubs, but the breakthrough came when they edged out Port Adelaide 8-7. The South Australian Register praised the performance as 'as brilliant as anything Adelaideans have ever seen at the finish of a game,' noting their improvement in ball handling, positional play and goal-kicking accuracy. The return to Victoria brought more success. Wins over Horsham, Sandhurst, Ballarat and Kyneton showed that the British had learned enough to be competitive. Their final Australian football record stood at six wins, one draw and twelve losses. While they were never truly a match for the top VFA sides, they proved far more adaptable than many had predicted. The tour demonstrated the skill gap between the codes but also the potential for cross-code contests to entertain and draw big crowds. The tour had little direct influence on Australian football's spread to Britain, but it was significant for rugby. It demonstrated the commercial potential of long, multi-match tours in the Southern Hemisphere. It also exposed British rugby's amateur restrictions, highlighting the value of professionalism for players asked to travel and compete so extensively. Many of the 1888 tourists would later be involved in the formation of the professional rugby league in 1895, with fourteen eventually playing the new code. The trip left a mark on both sides of the sporting world. Now, 137 years later, the British and Irish Lions are again in Australia chasing their own slice of history. Under Andy Farrell they have already secured the Test series with two wins from two, including last weekend's dramatic 29-26 triumph in Melbourne where Hugo Keenan scored the decisive try in the closing stages. The Lions now stand one victory away from completing a 3-0 clean sweep in Australia. The Wallabies squad has been hit hard by injuries. Captain Harry Wilson is leading a side missing several key players, with hooker David Porecki the latest to be ruled out and Brandon Paenga-Amosa called into the squad. Coach Joe Schmidt has spoken of the need to show composure and belief, while senior players such as Nic White, in what may be his final Test, are urging the team to deliver a performance that restores pride.
