Dolphins lose key offensive piece for 2025 after neck surgery
The Miami Dolphins will have to adjust their running back rotation before the season even begins. Alexander Mattison, signed just this offseason, will miss the entire 2025 campaign after suffering a neck injury in Sunday's preseason game against the Chicago Bears.
Injury and immediate surgery
The injury happened on a 21-yard reception in the first half when Mattison took a hard tackle. He was transported by ambulance to a Chicago hospital, where doctors performed neck surgery later that day. Sources say the procedure was successful, and Mattison is expected to fully recover in time for 2026.

Depth chart impact
Mattison, 27, was listed as the third running back behind De'Von Achane and rookie Jaylen Wright. Miami brought him in on a one-year deal after his 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he played 14 games and started seven.
In his six-year career, including five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Mattison has totaled 2,790 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns, and 136 catches for 1,012 receiving yards with seven receiving scores.
Possible replacements
Veteran Jamaal Williams was in Miami for a workout Monday, a sign that the team is already looking to fill Mattison's spot. Williams last played with the New Orleans Saints and has experience as both a lead back and a short-yardage specialist.
The Dolphins' preseason plans now shift, as coach Mike McDaniel will have to sort out running back depth before Week 1.
Miami will play the Lions on Saturday and finish preseason on August 23 against the Jaguars. The regular season opener is set for September 7 at the Indianapolis Colts.

The leaks were all true. The NBA officially announced its opening night and Christmas Day matchups Tuesday, and they won't come as a surprise to those who have been paying attention. The defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder will kick off the 2025-26 NBA season on opening night in a matchup against Kevin Durant's Houston Rockets on Oct. 21. That game will take place at 7:30 p.m. ET. Later that night, the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors will square off to open the season.
