11 killed in stampede at cricket celebration in India
Dozens were injured as fans attempted to enter a stadium through a small gate
At least 11 people died and over 50 have been injured in a stampede at a cricket stadium where celebrations to mark their team's first Indian Premier League (IPL) title were taking place.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when a massive crowd gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Indian Bengaluru to celebrate the Royal Challengers' victory over Punjab Kings. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000, was overwhelmed by an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people.
No one had expected "such a huge crowd," according to the minister. The surge led to chaos as fans attempted to enter the stadium through a small gate, resulting in the fatal stampede.
Media reports suggest that a rumor about free passes being distributed at another gate had intensified the crowd's movement, contributing to the tragedy. Emergency services faced difficulties reaching the victims due to the dense crowd. In response to the incident, a planned victory parade was canceled over safety concerns.
The secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devajit Saikia, expressed regret, stating, "It is very unfortunate. This is a negative side of popularity. People are crazy for their cricketers. The organizers should have planned it better."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered condolences, describing the event as "heartrending" and expressing his thoughts for those who lost loved ones.
The stampede has overshadowed Royal Challengers Bengaluru's historic IPL victory, raising concerns over crowd management and safety protocols at large public gatherings. In January, at least 30 people were killed as tens of thousands of Hindu devotees rushed to bathe in a sacred river during the Maha Kumbh festival, the world's largest religious gathering.

"When New Leadership Role Comes...": Ben Stokes On India Test Skipper Shubman Gill
Ahead of the first Test against India, England skipper Ben Stokes said that the visitors have an "exciting time" in the longest format of the game as they have announced young Shubman Gill as the new captain of the national team. After batting wizards Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bid adieu to Test cricket last month, India was left short on experience. With India bereft of its torchbearers, the management turned to youngsters to mark the beginning of a new era. After their decision, the captaincy baton was passed from Rohit to Gill. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Ben Stokes told the media, "I think Subhman Gill is a very fine player. He's been around a long time now, considering he's only young. He's played a lot of cricket, a lot of IPL cricket, actually a lot of cricket for India. I think it's an exciting time for Indian cricket to be under the new leadership. It's a lot of pressure to be the captain of any Indian team. But yeah, it's an exciting time. I think it is always for teams when a new leadership role comes into play. So yeah, obviously, he will be my opponent for the next six weeks so that I won't go into it too much, but all the best." At 25, Gill has become one of the youngest players to hold the position in recent years. Though he lacks captaincy experience in the red-ball format, he has led India in a five-match T20I assignment in Zimbabwe in 2024. Gill has also been captaining the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gill has also served as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. He was Rohit Sharma's deputy in India's victorious Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025. In Test cricket, Gill has played 32 matches and scored 1,893 runs, including five centuries. India tour of England will take place from June to August 2025, with matches to be played at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). A new era beckons for India in the Test format as the modern-day giants gear up for their first assignment without the prized batting bigwigs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Shubman Gill, India's youngest Test captain, has taken the baton from Rohit to guide the nation to success and challenge for the World Test Championship mace. India squad for England Test series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc, wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. England on Wednesday announced its playing XI for the opening Test of the five-match series against India, which will kick off on June 20 at Headingley. For the opening Test, England has retained the majority of the XI they fielded against Zimbabwe during the one-off Test last month. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett will open for England, followed by Ollie Pope at number three. England Playing XI for the 1st Test: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir.

A look at Hardik Pandya's family: The people who shaped the cricketer
Hardik Pandya, one of India's most explosive all-rounders, is someone who comes from a fiercely determined family. From a struggling home in Baroda to international stardom, his rise has been powered by a father who gave up everything, a brother who walked the same path, and a mother who held them all together. Here's a closer look at the people who helped shape the cricketer's life before it took to the field. Himanshu Pandya: 'The father who risked it all' Himanshu Pandya may not have been a coach or selector, but his role in Hardik's success is impossible to ignore. He ran a small car finance business in Surat until he gave it up, moved to Baroda, and chased a dream that wasn't even his. This decision came at a cost. According to OneCricket, the family faced intense financial strain. Himanshu took odd jobs just to make sure his sons had what they needed to play cricket. That struggle left a deep impression on Hardik. In 2021, tragedy struck. Himanshu passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest. Hardik rushed home from national duty and later shared an emotional farewell: 'You were a happy soul! I will miss you every day, dad.' In a Times of India interview, he spoke about how grateful he is for everything he has received and that he believed his father was still watching over him. Nalini Pandya: A quiet backbone While Himanshu was the risk-taker, Nalini Pandya was the steady hand. She kept the family grounded through both the financial hardships and her husband's declining health. As OneCricket notes, she was a key force behind Hardik's ability to stay focused and driven through uncertain times. Brothers in arms and on the pitch Hardik's relationship with elder brother Krunal Pandya goes beyond family—it's cricketing kinship. Krunal, who joined Kiran More's academy first, paved the way. Together, the two played countless matches across Gujarat, sometimes earning prize money that helped the family stay afloat. Krunal carved out his own path, representing India and making his mark in the IPL. As of 2025, he is part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore setup after stints with Mumbai and Lucknow. Hardik Pandya's ex-wife and child In 2020, Hardik married Serbian model and actress Natasha Stankovic. That July, they welcomed their son, Agastya. But four years later, the couple announced their divorce. In a joint statement quoted by Mint, they said, 'After four years of being together, Natasha and I have decided to mutually part ways... We are blessed with Agastya, who will continue to be at the center of both our lives.' Despite the split, Hardik has embraced fatherhood fully. He has spoken in interviews about how Agastya brings calm to his chaotic cricketing world as both a source of joy and a reminder of what truly matters.
