Inflation rose the highest in these Southern California metro areas

Using the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a new study has found how inflation impacts people in different parts of California.
In its latest report, the federal agency put the year-over-year headline inflation rate at 2.7% as of June 2025, which is the highest since February, and up from 2.4% in May.
Various factors, such as the war in Ukraine, labor shortages, and recent tariffs, drive this higher-than-average inflation, according to WalletHub.
Despite the country not meeting its target yet, the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates at the level set in December 2024, the study authors say.
Inflation rates increased year-over-year in Southern California
It may come as no surprise to California residents that where you live is a major factor in how much you fork out for everyday goods and services.
In the latest WalletHub study, they compared 23 major MSAs (Metropolitan Statistical Areas) across two key metrics related to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures inflation.
They looked at the CPI for the latest month for which BLS data is available, two months prior, and one year before get a snapshot of how inflation has changed in the short and long term.
In California, the study found that the amount consumers spend on daily necessities like food and medical care has risen the highest over the last year in three major metro areas in the southern part of the state.
In the San Diego and Carlsbad region, the CPI rose by 3.8%, making it 19 times higher than the increase in CPI (0.2%) in Phoenix, Arizona, the lowest in the study.
While the CPI rose by 3.2% year-over-year in the Los Angeles/Long Beach and Anaheim metro area, per the WalletHub study, it appears prices have remained relatively steady over the last few months, increasing by just 0.1%.
In the Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ontario metro areas, prices rose by 2.6% year-over-year and 0.7% in recent months.
Meanwhile, in San Francisco, the CPI changed the least of all California metro areas in the study. Over the last year, the prices increased by 1.5% and 0.2% in recent months.

Elon Musk Was the First Person To Have a Net Worth of $400 Billion: What Could It Mean for Tesla Stock?

Elon Musk's business ventures have turned him into the wealthiest person on the planet. He was also the first person to reach a net worth of $400 billion, though his net worth has since fallen to about $342 billion, per the Forbes Billionaires List. Although Musk has many companies, none of them have impacted his wealth more than Tesla. The electric vehicle (EV) maker is tapping into autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve long-term revenue growth, and these catalysts are part of the reason Tesla is worth approximately $1 trillion. Read Next: Find Out: Read on for more details about how Musk and his wealth could affect Tesla stock going forward. Musk Is Heavily Invested in Tesla Although Musk has many ventures, Tesla is the most significant portion of his wealth. This bodes well for Tesla investors since Musk has to maintain Tesla's value to maintain his wealth and fund other ventures. If Tesla crashed, Musk's fortune would take a big dip, and that could hinder his ability to start additional ventures and fund his existing ones. Even though it may look like Musk isn't fully focused on Tesla from time to time, especially with his recent entrance into politics, it is a vital piece of his wealth. Musk, like any billionaire, likely strives to increase his wealth to the best of his ability, and most people share that goal. Other ventures could serve him well, but Tesla is the foundation. Cybercabs and Optimus represent two of Tesla's moonshot opportunities. Musk made EVs popular, and with his leadership, he could also make cybercabs and humanoid robots mainstream. That could make for plenty of happy shareholders. Check Out: Musk Still Has Other Companies Musk still has a bunch of other companies, such as SpaceX, xAI, X, Neuralink and The Boring Company, that contribute to his wealth as well. Each of these companies will grab some of Musk's attention, and he may turn to smaller ventures for outsize gains. For instance, it's likely easier to turn a $10 billion company into a $100 billion company than it is to turn Tesla from a $1 trillion company to a $10 trillion company. Some investors have praised Musk's ability to generate meaningful growth for Tesla while focusing on other ventures. However, other investors may wish that he exclusively focused on Tesla. Musk's ventures, however, could also be great news for Tesla, as they could possibly give him more assets that he could use to drive more innovation and demand for Tesla, potentially resulting in a higher stock price. Musk Remains the Pulse of Tesla Stock Few stocks can command valuations as high as Tesla's, but few companies have leaders like Musk. The tech billionaire remains the linchpin that decides Tesla's fate. His entrance into politics, for example, caused the stock a lot of volatility this year. It's down over 15% for the year as of July 17. Some investors still remain bullish on Tesla, while others are more cautious after its significant drop this year. Although short-term noise can drive plenty of price movement, many investors remain committed due to Musk's leadership and the company's exciting opportunities. Uber, Lucid partner on new robotaxi service, taking on Waymo and Tesla

Uber (UBER) is betting big on robotaxis, with pure-play electric vehicle maker Lucid (LCID) as its partner. The two companies, along with autonomous tech firm Nuro ( announced on Thursday morning a 'next-generation premium global robotaxi program' exclusively for the Uber platform. The new robotaxi program would outfit the Lucid Gravity SUV with Nuros Driver Level 4 autonomous software, deployed on Uber's platform and fleet management systems. Uber says the goal is to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid EVs equipped with the Nuro Driver over the next six years. The Lucid EVs will be owned and operated by Uber or its third-party fleet partners, and the service is expected to launch next year in a 'major US city.' A Lucid robotaxi prototype using Nuro software is already being tested at Nuro's Las Vegas proving grounds. As part of the deal, Uber said it will invest $300 million in Lucid, and a similar 'multi-hundred-million dollar" investment in Nuro. 'We're thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi program, purpose-built just for the Uber platform, to safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people across the world,' Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement. 'This investment from Uber further validates Lucid's fully redundant zonal architecture and highly capable platform as ideal for autonomous vehicles,' Lucid interim CEO Marc Winterhoff said. 'This is the start of our path to extend our innovation and technology leadership into this multi-trillion-dollar market.' The Uber-Lucid-Nuro robotaxi program is the latest bet on robotaxi services in the US, following Waymo's leadership in the space as the only true operator. Uber has also partnered with Alphabet's (GOOG) Waymo in deployments in Austin and Atlanta. And just this week, Tesla (TSLA) expanded its robotaxi testing in Austin, and Musk said the company would expand testing to the San Francisco Bay Area. However, reports suggest those applications for those state permits have not been submitted. Uber once had its own robotaxi operations, but the company pulled its efforts following a high-profile accident in Tempe, Arizona, in 2018. As for Lucid, the California-based company announced a strong second quarter of deliveries, with the new Lucid Gravity SUV arriving in showrooms. Lucid's goal to deliver 20,000 Air sedans and Gravity SUVs in 2025 seems ambitious, but the orders coming from Uber will help meet that goal, assuming Lucid and ramp up Gravity production. Uber and Lucid, respectively, are Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund's (PIF) top holdings, which may shed some light on why the companies are partnering up. Per PIF's latest 13F statement, noting the fund's holdings as of March 31, the fund owns a $5.31 billion stake in Uber and a $4.29 billion stake in Lucid, though PIF's stake in Lucid makes it the majority owner. US Bancorp quarterly profit beats estimates as bad loan provisions shrink

(Reuters) -U.S. Bancorp beat second-quarter profit estimates on Thursday, as the bank set aside less money to cover potential loan defaults. Shares of the lender fell 3.7% in premarket trading due to a third-quarter interest income forecast that fell short of expectations. Resilient credit quality and steady consumer spending have helped stave off a sharp increase in bad loan provisions across the banking sector. The Minnesota-based bank's provisions for credit losses declined 12% to $501 million in the quarter, driven by improved credit quality and loan portfolio sales, beating analysts' average expectation of $610.3 million in bad loan provisions, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. The sale of certain loans in the quarter resulted in a $53 million reserve release. Credit quality remained stable to improving, despite ongoing economic uncertainty, the bank said. On an adjusted basis, net income attributable to the lender was $1.11 per share in the three months ended June 30, beating expectations of $1.07. "Both loans and NII were down fractionally, but over time we would expect USB to get its share of loan growth," Oppenheimer analyst Chris Kotowski said. INTEREST INCOME LAGS Net interest income, or the difference between loan earnings and deposit payments, totaled $4.05 billion in the quarter, missing estimates of $4.12 billion. The bank said NII was partially hit by lower noninterest-bearing deposit balances in the reported quarter. Chief Financial Officer John Stern said last month that with rate cuts pushed out, NII was expected at the lower end of the $4.1 billion to $4.2 billion range. U.S. Bancorp expects third-quarter interest income between $4.1 billion and $4.2 billion, compared with expectations of $4.24 billion. Net interest margin, a key measure of lending profitability, narrowed to 2.66%, from 2.67% a year earlier.
