Champions League giants could build stunning new 120,000-capacity stadium as talks begin over biggest ground in Europe

BENFICA could build a stunning new 120,000 capacity stadium that would make it the biggest ground in Europe.
Their Estádio da Luz home is one of the most eye-catching arenas in Europe and has hosted the Champions League final.

It once boasted 120,000 seats but limitations in its current design mean it cannot be expanded beyond a 70,000 capacity.
Architects Populous, who designed Wembley and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, have been consulted over an expansion.
Benfica currently fill out their 68,100 seats and they plan to add a fourth level to the stadium.
Populous have also been brought in to help with designs to build a 10,000-capacity multi-purpose indoor arena.
It will contain two indoor sports halls, with capacities of 2,500 and 1,500 respectively, a swimming pool as well as a 500-seat theatre and a rooftop football pitch.
A fan plaza with space for 10,000 supporters will be built along with food and drink outlets, as well as shops and restaurants.
But some within the club want a return to a 120,000-seat venue, including vice-president Rui Passo.
He said: 'We cannot go beyond 70,000 in this stadium, for reasons of safety, comfort and regulation. We have to start thinking about a new stadium.
'There are two sports in which we want to be stronger, women's football and rugby.
'This stadium can be the home of women's football and rugby. I want to dream of crowds of 40, 50 and 60 thousand people watching rugby and women's football matches. We must start dreaming about a new stadium.
'We have full boxes with waiting lists. We have executive seats with waiting lists. We have red pass seats with a huge waiting list. Roughly speaking, it is not difficult to increase the number of red pass seats from 45,000 to 70,000, executive seats from 5,000 to 10,000 and boxes from 150 to 300.
'We have a waiting list to buy these seats (almost 17,000 for the red pass). It is quite possible to start thinking seriously about a project like this.'
Former club president Luís Filipe Vieira, who stepped down in 2021 after being arrested on suspicion of a breach of trust against Benfica, also dreams of a 120,000 capacity venue.
According to Correio da Manha, Vieira plans to use this idea as a cornerstone of his bid to become club president again in the October elections, and he has already consulted an architect about the plans.

Perlight Black Grid solar panel review: best for long warranty

This Perlight Black Grid review explores why this panel is a top choice for homeowners seeking both long-term performance and an extended warranty. It's part of our expert-reviewed guide to the best solar panels for UK homes. If you're weighing up whether solar panels are worth it, this review — and our full guide to the best solar panel installers — will help you make an informed decision. The Perlight Black Grid solar panel stands out in a crowded market, not only for its sleek design and solid efficiency but for offering one of the longest warranties available. Choosing the best solar panels for your home involves more than just headline specs, especially as installation is often the most expensive part of the total cost of solar panels. That's why long-term durability matters. Commercial solar growth has driven significant tech advances in recent years. Many panels now offer similar specs on paper — comparable power output, 25- to 30-year lifespans, and sleek all-black designs. But with installation often being the largest part of the overall , and British weather posing its own set of challenges, the stakes for getting the right system are high. While solar panel prices have dropped dramatically, thanks in part to China's manufacturing scale and innovation, installation costs remain high due to labour, scaffolding, and system integration. So it's worth considering the total system cost, not just the price per panel, when selecting the best panel for your home. Why choose the Perlight Black Grid? Price, installed: £895 to £1,195 per kW Efficiency: 26 per cent Wattage per panel: 500W Type: N-Type Made in: China Degradation: 87.4 per cent after 30 years Warranty: 30 years Founded in 2006, Perlight is a Chinese manufacturer of solar panels with a long track record. Its Black Grid solar panel offers an impressive 30-year warranty — five years longer than the industry standard — making it ideal for those looking to maximise long-term savings and reduce replacement concerns. This longer guarantee can offer extra peace of mind, particularly if you're financing your solar panel system over time or plan to remain in your home for decades. That said, many panels rated for 25 years will likely keep performing beyond their warranty period. In terms of performance, the Perlight Black Grid solar panel also offers better efficiency and a higher power rating, delivering 500W per panel, than other solar panels on our list. While the degradation rate is slightly lower than other top-tier models, it still holds up well, retaining nearly 87 per cent of output after 30 years. The company is also somewhat shy about filing facts about itself compared to its competitors, although it passes all the necessary regulatory hurdles. One downside is that Perlight isn't a Tier-1 manufacturer, meaning it hasn't been ranked by BloombergNEF for financial transparency and bankability. However, it has a long track record and its global footprint — shipping to over 100 countries — and compliance with international standards suggest a reliable product. The panels also have high pressure resistance, meaning they should be able to withstand the bumps, bangs and weather that 30 years on a roof will throw at them. The panels are built with high pressure resistance, which should help them withstand the UK's often unpredictable weather over several decades. Like most solar panels on the market today, these are manufactured in China, which has invested heavily in clean energy production and now dominates the global solar supply chain. China's lead in silicon refinement and solar R&D means many of the world's best solar panels come from Chinese firms. While the cost of panels has fallen by about 90% since 2000, installation costs have risen due to labour and inflation, so total system cost still needs careful budgeting. Pros: Market-leading 30-year warranty High efficiency and power output Cons: A 30-year product warranty is hard to come by in any product but Perlight offers one of the longest warranties available in the market Paul Evans, head of renewables at solar panel fitter Glow Green How we compiled our guide To compile our list, we spoke to experts on the ground and have broken down the top-performing brands based on real-world value, not just technical specs. We've prioritised long-term performance, value for money, and the reputation of the best solar panel installers in the UK. And if you're wondering if solar panels are worth it for your home, this guide is designed to help you make a smart, informed decision that pays off over time, whether you're upgrading an old array or fitting solar panels for the first time. Most panels are guaranteed for 25 years and offer similar power output, size, efficiency and looks. So we've weighted our judgement towards cost and degradation, which describes how much power the cells will provide after a number of years. The higher the percentage, the better. Much of your decision will also depend on which installer you go with, as many have preferred brands they work with due to bulk purchasing. You'll also see a lot of unfamiliar Chinese names as you do your research, but many of these are Tier-1 manufacturers in clean energy with strong track records in quality and durability. Slovenian ace Sesko and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins formed the two man shortlist as United sought to give Ruben Amorim the firepower he craves. United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell and negotiator Matt Hargreaves flew out to Germany in a bid to get the deal over the line, although the Old Trafford club will try to negotiate Leipzig's asking price down. Vivell was previously with the Red Bull group that owns Leipzig and Sesko's previous club Salzburg for seven years and knows the 6ft 5in striker, 22, well. In a recent interview in Germany, Vivell said: 'Benjamin Sesko is among the game's top young talents and has enormous potential to become a top player. He has all the qualities to do that. 'He's extremely quick, has a great jump on him and is strong in the air. Benjamin is a real goalscorer, who is mobile and technically strong. His abilities make him a special player with a special profile.' Sun Sport understands that Sesko, who was also on Arsenal's shortlist over the summer, would prefer to move to Old Trafford rather than Tyneside. That is despite the fact that Newcastle offer the prospect of Champions League football, while United have no European football at all this season. Toon boss Eddie Howe is also thought to be growing apprehensive about his prospects of landing Sesko, who has scored 39 goals over his two seasons in the Bundesliga, now that United are making their move. They are sticking to their £70m valuation and dismissed all attempts by Arsenal to bargain them down, leading to the Gunners eventually landing Viktor Gyokeres instead.

Man Utd make final Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins decision as transfer 'accelerates'

Benjamin Sesko has moved above Ollie Watkins in Manchester United's pecking order as they look to add the RB Leipzig striker to their squad ahead of the new season Benjamin Sesko has moved to the top of Manchester United's wish-list as they look to add the striker to their ranks. The Red Devils have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, but Ruben Amorim is open to adding more firepower to his side following the club's dire 2024/25 campaign. ‌ The highly rated Sesko looks set to move on after Leipzig missed out on Champions League football. United will be absent from European football completely this season, but that is not thought to have put the Slovenian off. ‌ Sesko is reportedly favouring a move to Old Trafford over Newcastle, who are also in the market for a top forward, with Liverpool-linked Alexander Isak angling for a move away from Tyneside. According to The Athletic, Sesko is Man United's priority if they go for another striker this summer and they are said to have made 'informal' contact with Leipzig. ‌ The Red Devils are also admirers of Ollie Watkins, although Aston Villa have insisted the 29-year-old is not for sale. A move for Sesko looks more realistic, with United also favouring a player of potential over a proven quality like Watkins. United have been linked with Sesko in the past, but they balked at paying his previous club, RB Salzburg, around £2m in 2019. He will now cost many times more after emerging as one of the most promising strikers in Europe, scoring 39 goals in 87 appearances for Leipzig since his arrival in 2023. ‌ His current contract runs until 2029, having only signed a new deal last year. It reportedly came with an understanding that he would be allowed to depart if another club offered in the region of £69m to £78m. Untied's signings will need to be offset by some outgoings, with a number of players declaring their desire to leave the club. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia were left out of the tour of the United States, with the so-called 'bomb squad' training at the club's Carrington complex. Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan. United's transfer dealings have been widely criticised in recent seasons but Amorim has said chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox would not be taken advantage of just to get rid of those surplus to requirements.
