Take action against officials for preventing SC people from performing rituals at temple, says forum
Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front representing the Scheduled Caste people of Uthapuram submitted a petition with the Madurai district administration recently, seeking equal rights for performing rituals at the Muthalamman Temple in the village.
S. Sankaralingam, a villager and one of the petitioners, said that despite the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court's order directing the district administration to ensure that the SC people received equal rights at the temple, the Divisional Revenue Officer, who chaired a meeting between people of the two community ahead of the temple festival, had instructed the SC people to not broach the topic of performing 'Arasamaram' and other rituals.
Following the court order dated April 21, 2025, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court said that the SC people could offer prayers at both Muthalamman temple and also at Mariamman Temple. 'Besides, the court also directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department officials in Dindigul to convene a committee to arrive at a solution to the 'group worship' ('koottu vazhipadu') within one year. Also, it must be ensured that the 'Arasamaram' is not damaged while performing the ritual by any group, Mr. Sankaralingam said.
Based on the court order, on April 22, more than 500 SC people went to the temple and offered prayers by adhering to the court's order. However, the following morning, when the SC people went to the temple to perform rituals such as making Pongal and sacrificing goat, the police and revenue officials denied them permission stating that the court's order did not specify about granting permission for such rituals, he added.
'While the caste Hindus were allowed to perform similar rituals even early in the morning, the officials discriminated the SC people alone by stopping them from performing the rituals,' said T. Chellakannu, State president, Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front.
Despite pointing out the court order which stated that equal rights can be enjoyed by all during worship, the officials refused to give a suitable reply and prevented only the SC people from performing the rituals, he alleged.
'The police informed that they had locked the temple at about 3 in the morning itself. But, later in the evening, the locks of the police and revenue officials were found open,' he said.
As the police did not follow the court's diktats, the Collector should initiate stern action against the revenue and police officials who acted in a biased manner, Mr. Chellakannu said.

Internal reservation: Survey of SCs to continue at 'citizen centric services' centers
Bengaluru, A provision has been made to continue the survey for gathering the empirical data, aimed at providing internal reservation among Scheduled Castes in Karnataka, at the 9,400 state level 'citizen centric services' centers from June 9 to 22, the commission overseeing the survey said. With about 10 per cent of the survey yet to be completed and amid requests for time extension, the commission headed by retired judge of the Karnataka High Court H N Nagmohan Das, who has been tasked to recommend to the government the internal reservation among SCs, has made this announcement. "Currently, the 'Comprehensive Survey of the Scheduled Castes-2025', is being carried out across the state of Karnataka from April 5 onwards in 2 modes at special camps and online self-declarations. As of date i.e., , an overall progress of 90 per cent has been achieved in the survey across the state," an official release dated June 7 that was released to media on Sunday said. It said about 10 per cent of the caste survey is yet to be completed. In addition to this, some Scheduled Caste organisations have once again submitted representations, requesting for time extension to complete the said survey. The commission, however, pointed out that in the wake of the schools reopening in the state, the teachers who were appointed as enumerators for the survey have been relieved from the survey work. "Thus, in order to facilitate the continuation of the SC castes' survey for those Scheduled Castes' households of Karnataka, who are yet to submit their data in the Scheduled Caste Survey, a provision has been made to carry out the same at the existing 9,400 state level 'citizen centric services' centers, such as , "Karnataka One", "Bengaluru One" and "Grama One" and also at the 198 "BBMP ward offices", from June 9 to June 22," it said. In order to submit the required information, the Aadhaar card or ration card of the citizen is required, it further said, adding that a separate camp will be set up at each of the 198 Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike ward offices, to carry out this survey. According to officials, the SC population in the state according to the 2011 census was 1.04 crore. In 2025, the projected SC population will be 1.16 crore and out of this 1.05 crore, have been enumerated. Apart from this, the same facility for the survey will also be provided at the Bapuji Seva Kendras, across the state. To enter the said information at the centres, the citizen's Aadhaar card or the ration card number is required. Further, the time limit for Scheduled Caste families for submitting online self declaration has also been extended up to June 22. This can be done through the link: https: As per the government orders earlier and the terms of references, the Commission has to obtain empirical data regarding the representation of the 101 Scheduled Castes' in education and government services in the state of and has to submit a report with suitable recommendations on internal reservation of the Scheduled Castes. A section of SCs, like 'SC Left', have been demanding internal reservation, alleging that only a few influential sub-castes were taking away a majority of the benefits, while many communities were still marginalised. The internal reservation is aimed at slicing up the 17 per cent reservation matrix given to 101 Scheduled Castes. The government, in November last year, had appointed Nagmohan Das to head a commission to recommend internal reservation among SCs, after the Supreme Court last year allowed the states to provide internal reservation, and the state cabinet agreed to implement internal reservation. In a landmark verdict delivered by the Supreme Court on August 1 last year, it held that states are constitutionally empowered to make sub-classifications within the SCs, which form a socially heterogeneous class, for granting reservation for the uplift of castes that are socially and educationally more backward.

16 arrested in Assam for illegal cattle slaughter during Eid
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that 16 individuals have been arrested across the state in connection with incidents of alleged illegal cattle slaughter during Eid-ul-Zuha celebrations. CM Sarma stated that cattle remains were recovered from various locations in Assam, with five unauthorised slaughter sites identified in the Barak Valley. These were located in Gumrah, Silchar, and Lakhipur in Cachar district, and Badarpur and Banga in Karimganj district. The arrests include nine people from Cachar and seven from Sribhumi. Additional reports cited the discovery of cattle parts in areas including Cotton University in Kamrup (Metro), Dhubri, Hojai, and Bagargool in Sribhumi. "While our Constitution guarantees the right to religious freedom, it equally upholds the rule of law and public order," CM Sarma wrote on social media platform X. "Disturbing incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and recovery of cattle parts were reported from multiple locations across Assam." CM Sarma emphasised that the state is committed to preserving communal harmony, but warned that violations of the law, regardless of religious background, would invite strict action. Under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, cattle slaughter is prohibited in areas where Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs form a majority, and within five kilometres of temples or Vaishnavite monasteries (satras). While beef consumption is not illegal, the Act imposes stringent restrictions on slaughter and sale. Tensions flared in Hojai on Sunday, following claims that meat pieces were found in Hindu residential areas on Saturday night. Authorities used mild force to disperse the crowd, a senior police official said. "The situation is now under control, with additional paramilitary forces deployed. We are closely monitoring developments," the official added. Meanwhile, protests continue in Barpukhuri, where efforts are ongoing to negotiate with demonstrators. Residents in Hojai allege that meat was deliberately thrown into their premises, though police have not confirmed these claims. In Guwahati, a piece of meat was reportedly found wrapped in polythene near the Cotton University campus. Police have collected the sample for forensic testing. A similar incident was reported in Nalia, Dhubri district, where suspected meat pieces were discovered near a temple. Consumption of beef is not illegal in the state, but the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, bans cattle slaughter and sale of beef in localities where Hindus, Jains and Sikhs are in the majority and in areas within a five-km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery). On Sunday, a huge number of people from the Hindu and Muslim communities came out in Hojai to hold protests separately, and they blocked roads and clashed with the police, the officer said. "While the Hindus blocked roads at Barpukhuri area, where suspected cattle meat pieces were found at three places on Saturday. Following that, Muslims also came out and blocked a road at Bhuyanpatty as a countermeasure," he said. A section of the mob at Bhuyanpatty clashed with the police personnel who resorted to "mild lathi-charge" to disperse the protesters, the officer said. "The situation is now under control, and we have deployed additional forces from central paramilitary agencies. We are closely monitoring the development," he said. The protest in Barpukhuri area is still underway, and the administration is talking to the agitators to clear the blockade.
