Take action against officials for preventing SC people from performing rituals at temple, says forum
S. Sankaralingam, a villager and one of the petitioners, said that despite the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court's order directing the district administration to ensure that the SC people received equal rights at the temple, the Divisional Revenue Officer, who chaired a meeting between people of the two community ahead of the temple festival, had instructed the SC people to not broach the topic of performing 'Arasamaram' and other rituals.
Following the court order dated April 21, 2025, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court said that the SC people could offer prayers at both Muthalamman temple and also at Mariamman Temple. 'Besides, the court also directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department officials in Dindigul to convene a committee to arrive at a solution to the 'group worship' ('koottu vazhipadu') within one year. Also, it must be ensured that the 'Arasamaram' is not damaged while performing the ritual by any group, Mr. Sankaralingam said.
Based on the court order, on April 22, more than 500 SC people went to the temple and offered prayers by adhering to the court's order. However, the following morning, when the SC people went to the temple to perform rituals such as making Pongal and sacrificing goat, the police and revenue officials denied them permission stating that the court's order did not specify about granting permission for such rituals, he added.
'While the caste Hindus were allowed to perform similar rituals even early in the morning, the officials discriminated the SC people alone by stopping them from performing the rituals,' said T. Chellakannu, State president, Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front.
Despite pointing out the court order which stated that equal rights can be enjoyed by all during worship, the officials refused to give a suitable reply and prevented only the SC people from performing the rituals, he alleged.
'The police informed that they had locked the temple at about 3 in the morning itself. But, later in the evening, the locks of the police and revenue officials were found open,' he said.
As the police did not follow the court's diktats, the Collector should initiate stern action against the revenue and police officials who acted in a biased manner, Mr. Chellakannu said.

Somebody within govt trying to defame Dharmasthala: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi
HUBBALLI: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has endorsed Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's 'conspiracy' claim on the Dharmasthala issue and alleged that somebody within the State Government is involved in defaming the holy town. Speaking to the media here on Saturday, Joshi said that the way Shivakumar has expressed his opinion on the ongoing investigation into the Dharmasthala cases has shown his helplessness in the government. Moreover, Shivakumar admitting the conspiracy, being in the government, itself has led to confusion about whether the Congress government is in connivance with the anonymous person in tarnishing the image of Dharmasthala, Joshi said. Further attacking the State Government over its approach towards the SIT investigation, the BJP leader charged that it seems Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is influenced by the ultra-leftists surrounding him. 'The forces, which were relentlessly trying to undermine the sentiments of the majority of Hindus, are behind the entire issue. The government should stop the digging and submit an interim report before the House,' he demanded. 'Before initiating the investigation, the police should have inquired about the anonymous person by arresting him immediately,' he said, taking serious exception to the police letting the anonymous person speak to the media. Also, raising the doubt over the identity of that person, he said, if he was belonged to another religion, it could be a systematic effort to hurt the Hindu sentiments. 'Before the Hindus get angry over this entire drama, the government should take appropriate action,' he said.

Save Delhi-NCR strays: When RSS chief & Rahul Gandhi speak in unison for the voiceless
A helpless stray (TOI) Disagreement is inherent in Indian politics. But the recent Supreme Court order on the removal of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR has brought the RSS chief and the ideologically opposite Gandhis of Congress on the same page, amid growing anger across India over the same. Yes, from Sangh's Mohan Bhagwat to siblings Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, as well as their cousin Varun and his mother Maneka Gandhi of BJP, all have spoken out in unison against the "death sentence" meted out to the strays of Delhi-NCR. Bhagwat has advocated for a humane and scientific way to regulate the population of strays in the capital and its outskirts over mass confinement in pounds in far-off places -- an approach that echoes the animal birth control (ABC) rules mandated under law. "All animals have the right to live. The problem can be solved only by regulating the population of street dogs, but it cannot be resolved by putting them in shelters," Bhagwat, a veterinary science graduate, said at a religious congregation in Cuttack on Thursday. "Sheltering all street dogs is not a practical solution. The only effective way is to implement sterilisation and vaccination, as already prescribed in law," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Refrigerators 2025 - Click Here To See Prices! Refrigerators | Search Ads Search Now Undo Echoing similar voice, leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi has termed SC's order to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR "as a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy". These voiceless souls are not 'problems' to be erased, he wrote on X, a day after the SC order. "Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care can keep streets safe -- without cruelty. Blanket removals are cruel, shortsighted, and strip us of compassion. We can ensure public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand." Similarly, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has described the dogs as "the most beautiful creatures who do not deserve this kind of cruelty". "The moving of all the city's stray dogs to shelters within a matter of weeks is going to result in horrendously inhumane treatment of them. Enough shelters do not even exist to take them on.' Their cousin and former BJP Lok Sabha MP Varun Gandhi has described the SC order as 'institutionalisation of cruelty' and 'a harbinger of a legal structure that seeks to punish those who cannot fend for themselves'. "Nations face deeper moral crises when they step away from empathy,' he wrote on X. Summing up the RSS chief and Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi's unprecedented show of support for the voiceless, noted animal rights activist Maneka Sanjay Gandhi told TOI that the "issue is above politics". "It is about the soul of India. The word animal comes from anima which means soul. Are we going to survive as a compassionate society or will we become soulless violent people," Gandhi, a former Union minister said.
