Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Millions in the firing line as a series of cold fronts bring rain, wind and snow
The first in four cold fronts arrived in southwest Western Australia on Sunday and delivered rain and wind gusts of over 120km/hour to the region.
Another cold front powered by a low-pressure system will impact South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and NSW from Tuesday.
Possible snowfalls between 10cm and 30cm are expected over the alpine regions, particularly in Victoria, with strong winds and rain to impact low-lying regions.
'Strong to damaging winds will be the main impact from this weather front,' the Bureau of Meteorology's Dean Narramore told Daily Mail Australia.
The forecaster said residents in coastal and elevated parts of South Australia, Victoria and southern NSW needed to remain vigilant amid powerful wind gusts.
'Those winds will be strong enough to bring down trees and powerlines and may cause property damage,' he said.
'A trampoline may go flying so tie down items.'
A stronger cold front is expected to arrive on Wednesday, which will bypass southwestern WA, but directly impact the southeast with cold, windy weather.
Snow could fall on Mount Lofty, just 25 minutes' drive from the Adelaide CBD.
'The airmass will likely be cold enough for snow in SA's Flinders Ranges later on Wednesday, should sufficient moisture make it that far north,' Weatherzone said.
The heaviest falls of snow will impact the alpine regions in NSW and Victoria where 20cm to 40cm are predicted, with snow falling at elevations as low as 800m.
Elevated areas like the NSW Central Tablelands can also expect snowfalls.
Areas east of the Great Dividing Range will be spared from the bleakest weather and Sydney should be cool but dry all week.
In the north of the country, a high-pressure system is dominating the weather patterns and making way for a clearer, dry week in much of Queensland.
Much of the area could be 'completely cloudless' for the week.

Bundle up, winter is coming! The year's snow season is going to be grisly across much of the U.S., according to a new forecast from the Farmer's Almanac. Frigid temperatures will be felt for millions of Americans from the the coast of the Pacific Northwest to the northern Plains to New England. A 'significant cold snap' is expected in mid-January, with another 'pronounced cold spell' predicted to hit in mid-February. "Most of the country is on tap for a cold or very cold winter, kind of almost going back to an old-fashioned winter,' Almanac editor Sandi Duncan told USA Today. "It's going to cool down, it's going to snow, then it might warm up a little, then it's going to repeat itself again." So what's in store for your neighborhood and how much shoveling will you need this winter? Winter doesn't officially begin until December 21 with the winter solstice, but cold weather could make an appearance as early as September in some parts, the Almanac warns. New England is expected to see frequent snowstorms, especially in mid-January "Some pretty good snowstorms in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and southern New York … (and) then again in February, between the 8th and the 11th, we're calling for some very cold conditions, with some heavy snow in northern New England," the Almanac warns. But that's not the only region. The Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, northern Central U.S. and Pacific Northwest mountains should all gear up for some major snow totals that could impact the holidays. "And we're calling for a pretty big snowstorm" in the Great Lakes region from February 8-11. As the snow gives way to very cold temperatures there, snow moves into Kentucky and Ohio. The beginning of March brings snow to most of the region," Duncan said, according to USA Today. "The month ends with brisk, windy conditions, plus snow in the north." For the Pacific Northwest, the Almanac said skiers should be happy as the mountains are 'gearing up for some impressive snowfall total.' While the Mid-Atlantic could see some 'decent snow' as well, the Almanac said that the East Coast will likely also feel the effects of significant rain. Texas and the southern Plains states could once again see a stormy holiday season, with periodic cold snaps, the Almanac noted. A wet winter is expected to drench the Southwest — although the region won't feel temperatures that are too extreme. The Southeast will see many wet periods this winter. Although, the Appalachian regions could be lucky, with occasional snow events. 'While snow will be limited, the region may face several cold rain events and occasional freezing precipitation, particularly in northern areas,' the Almanac said. The effects of winter could linger through March and April in New England, Great Lakes and the northern Plains, Duncan warned. According to federal forecasters, there is a chance of La Niña conditions this winter in the U.S. That situation tends to push the jet stream north and bring warmer than typical winter temperatures in the south, and colder than normal in the north.

Lightning strike hitting house sounded 'like a bomb'
A couple say a lightning strike hitting their house "sounded like a bomb going off".Emma and Tim Brennan were woken by the noise at about 02.30 BST on Thursday, when a storm passed over their Gloucestershire home. The strike splintered several roof beams and knocked out the house's electrics, but did not start a fire. The dramatic incident was caught on a neighbour's door bell Brennan joked: "We could be standing here today and the house not be here, so I'm definitely buying a lottery ticket tonight." Mrs Brennan said the couple initially did not know what had happened when the noise woke them up at their home near Upton St Leonards. "We had a look outside and were going to go back to bed but when we went to put the fan on and realised we didn't have any electricity, we thought we better have a look around the house."We realised the door bell cam had blown off the wall and there was a burning smell," she the couple opened their loft hatch, they were greeted by a hail of splinters from the roof beams, at which point they decided they needed to call the fire service."They were here as quick as a flash," Mr Brennan said. He said one of the firefighters told him he had never seen wood beams be so damaged and yet not catch alight."He said we'd been very lucky and it could have been a hell of a lot worse," Mr Brennan thanked the fire service, adding: "They were really thorough and made sure everything was safe before they left."The couple are still without some of their electrics, and are having their roof inspected on Wednesday.

Met Éireann issues thunderstorm warning for three counties as temperatures rise
Met Éireann has issued a thunderstorm warning for three counties on Wednesday. The national weather agency said Clare, Kerry and Limerick will be impacted between 3pm and 9pm. Showers or showery outbreaks of rain will push up from the southwest with some thunderstorms possible as temperatures reach highs of 21 to 25 degrees. The warm and humid conditions are set to continue for the rest of the week, according to Met Éireann, with plenty of dry weather.
