KLIA apologises for pause in Aerotrain services
PETALING JAYA : Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has issued an official apology for the temporary pause in Aerotrain operations this morning.
In a post on X this evening, KLIA explained that the 15-minute delay was caused by a door malfunction, and shuttle buses were deployed during that time to maintain connectivity.
'Services resumed at 11.01am and operations are now back to normal. Thank you for your patience,' it said on its official @KLIA_my account.
X user @afiqmukhtar had highlighted the service disruption at 10.52am, asking why the Aerotrain had 'broken down again'.
'Millions (spent for) repairs but it still cannot hold passengers to capacity. What is this?' he said, also tagging Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, transport minister Loke Siew Fook, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) in his post.
MCA Youth secretary-general Saw Yee Fung later called on the transport ministry to set up a special task force to investigate the true cause of the service's problems.
'According to news reports, the driverless train's services returned to operations after undergoing upgrading work worth RM456 million, with its operations having been suspended for 28 months.
'Nevertheless, its repeated disruptions within the past month are disappointing and unacceptable,' she said.
On July 2, Facebook user Ahmad Ramadzan Soid posted that one of the trains had broken down, while other netizens said a passenger had caused the train's door to jam.
On July 4, travel blogger CK Ng posted that the trains were not in service, with passengers being transported to the airport's satellite terminal by bus instead.
MAHB explained that the lack of service on July 4 was due to one of the drainage pumps experiencing a technical fault amid heavy rainfall, preventing the automatic removal of accumulated water.
Loke attributed the rainwater issue to the airport's legacy facilities, and denied the problem was in the Aerotrain's design.
'The incident was neither caused by any weakness in the new Aerotrain system itself, nor because the train 'cannot withstand heavy rain' as some quarters have suggested.
'When the pump failed to operate as designed, rainwater accumulated in the tunnel and reached a safety threshold, automatically activating the Aerotrain's safety systems to suspend operations as a precaution,' he said.
Loke said the two incidents 'demonstrate the integrity and reliability of the new Aerotrain's safety systems', and that the new Aerotrain assets are 'built to meet international standards and are operating well'.
The new Aerotrain services began on July 1, involving three trains with a maximum capacity of 270 passengers each.

Penang mulls cable car link to Gurney Bay as hill project progresses

(Bernama pic) GEORGE TOWN : A feasibility study is being conducted for a cable car line linking Penang's Botanic Gardens to Gurney Bay, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said today. Chow did not give specific details or an implementation schedule, but said the proposed 2.5km route made sense due to Gurney Bay's rising popularity, adding that it could help spread visitor flow. He also said the Gurney Bay line would serve as a second route to Penang Hill, especially during peak times and service outages. 'It supports our vision for sustainable tourism and better planning,' he said before witnessing the signing of a financing partnership between Hartasuma Ropeways Sdn Bhd and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) for the Penang Hill cable car project. The Botanic Gardens-Gurney Bay link, if approved, would complement the Penang Hill cable car project that has secured RM367.2 million and is expected to be completed by early 2027. The 2.73km main line for the Penang Hill cable car project will run from the Botanic Gardens to the hill's summit, climbing 700m above sea level in under 10 minutes. It will feature 50 eight-seat gondolas, moving up to 1,400 passengers per hour each way. The line is being built by Hartasuma Ropeways in partnership with Austrian firm Doppelmayr. It will serve as a gateway to the Unesco-listed Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, create 400 jobs, and offer disabled-friendly access, according to the planners. Hartasuma's executive director, Ravindran Menon, said the project cost rose from RM245 million to RM367.2 million due to post-pandemic price hikes and added facilities, including a car park, food outlets and sports areas. 'It won't just be a cable car. It will have shops, cafes, and even yoga space or pickleball courts,' he said. Penang Hill Corporation general manager Cheok Lay Leng said the gondolas would help manage visitor flow, keeping within the hill's maximum capacity of 6,463 people at a time.

With warm and welcoming smiles, 70-year-old Wang Ah Hie and his 69-year-old wife Karen Lim proudly display a range of locally themed merchandise, including T-shirts bearing the words 'Malaysia', 'Johor' and 'Ayer Hitam'. For the couple, these items are more than just products for sale — they are a symbol of their love and devotion to the country. 'When tourists return to their home countries, they take a piece of Malaysia with them.
