Torreon, Bondoc ask Senate to probe Eleksyon 2025 'irregularities'
Israelito Torreon, lawyer of former senatorial candidate Apollo Quiboloy, and Jimmy Bondoc went to the Senate and filed a petition for the upper chamber and its concerned committees, especially the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, to investigate the supposed 'direct and blatant involvement of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the widespread and well-documented irregularities in the 2025 National, Local, and Bangsamoro Elections.'
In the letter addressed to Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escuderom, Torreon enumerated several alleged 'anomalous and irregular' instances involving Comelec during the midterm polls.
Among them are the alleged mishandling of election paraphernalia, online voting irregularities, questionable procurement activities, and mismatches between ballot contents and voter receipts.
'Indeed, the 2025 Elections revealed the vulnerabilities and statutory gaps in our current automated elections system,' the letter read.
Of the 12-man PDP Laban senatorial slate, five candidates won in the last elections, namely Senators Ronald dela Rosa, Bong Go, Rodante Marcoleta, Camille Villar, and Imee Marcos.
"While we celebrate the victory of our peers here in the new Senate, we also cannot in good conscience turn a blind eye to the frustrating realities that diminish the faith of the Filipino People in our democratic process," added the petitioners in the letter.
Comelec, meanwhile, said it welcomes the possible probe of the Senate.
'We believe a prompt and thorough Senate inquiry will greatly assist the public in understanding the gravity of these issues, and allow the legislature to explore remedial or regulatory measures to ensure that the next elections are secure, transparent, and genuinely reflective of the will of the People,' said Comelec in a statement.
To recall, the PDP Laban in June also filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking for a manual recount of senatorial votes in the 2025 elections.
Comelec chairman George Garcia previously noted that the random manual audit of the automated elections indicated a 99.997% accuracy by the machines used.
The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) also said it recorded a 99.909% match between the physical and transmitted election returns for the 2025 polls. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Comelec warns vs. 'fake news' of voter registration fee
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued an advisory against a social media post circulating online which falsely states that money will be charged to those who seek to register as voters. In a "fake news alert" on Friday evening, the poll body denied that it now charges a P3,000-fee for each voter registration, as claimed by a bogus social media announcement. "Ang Facebook post na kumakalat ukol sa pagbabayad ng halagang 3,000 PHP para makapagparehistro bilang botante ay HINDI TOTOO at HINDI GALING sa tanggapan ng Commission on Elections," the poll body said. (The Facebook post spreading online about paying P3,000 to be able to register as a voter is not true and is not from the office of the Commission on Elections.) The Comelec added that the same misleading content was not posted in its official and verified social media channels on any platform. A total of 2.8 million Filipinos registered for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) during Comelec's 10-day voter registration drive. It kicked off on August 1, or nearly two weeks before President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. signed into law Republic Act (RA) 12232, which postponed the polls from October 2025 to November 2026. The new law sets the term of office of all elected barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials to four years. Comelec Chairman George Garcia had said voter registration for the BSKE would resume in October this year. Also in its advisory, the Comelec insisted that it would never charge any fees to register as voters in any election. "Ang pagpaparehistro bilang botante ay isang karapatang ginarantiya ng ating Konstitusyon sa mga kwalipikadong Pilipino at walang anumang klase ng bayad ang kailangan para rito," the Comelec said. (Registration as a voter is a constitutionally guaranteed right for qualified Filipinos. No fees whatsoever are required for this.) The poll body warned the public to refrain from clicking on suspicious links, and sharing these to others online. Senate probe on anomalous flood control projects set on Tuesday
The Senate's probe on supposed anomalous flood control projects, through the Blue Ribbon Committee, will begin on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. This was announced by Blue Ribbon panel chairman Senator Rodante Marcoleta on Saturday, who admitted that the inquiry would be a daunting task, 'considering the enormity of the multi-billion projects, and the complexity of untangling the web of corruption within the public works system.' The senator also said that the probe will not focus solely on contractors in question but will also try to uncover the public officials who shamelessly profit from flood control. Sara Duterte traveled to Kuwait to visit Filipino community — OVP
Vice President Sara Duterte traveled to Kuwait on Friday to visit the Filipino community in the Middle Eastern country, her office said Saturday. In a statement, the Office of the Vice President (OVP) said Duterte flew to Kuwait to join Filipinos there for a gathering to discuss concerns and issues impacting their sector. "As part of the Vice President's mandate to represent and advocate for the welfare of all Filipinos, including those overseas, it is essential that she remains actively engaged with the Filipino migrant communities wherever they may be," the OVP said. "She will then proceed to continue working on the release of our former head of state Rodrigo Duterte who was forcibly taken from Philippine soil," it added. The OVP stressed that Duterte's official engagements are conducted in full compliance with existing government rules and regulations, ensuring that her presence abroad is both lawful and aligned with her responsibilities in public service. "In addition, no public funds are used for all her travels overseas," the Vice President's office said. Moreover, the statement added that Vice President's office, along with its 10 satellite offices across the country, "remains ready to serve and assist our fellow Filipinos both here and abroad, despite limitations in capacity and budget."
