VP Sara: Reconciling with Marcos not a priority
Vice President Sara Duterte said she is not prioritizing talks of reconciliation with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., saying the welfare of the public matters more than "personal issues." 'Unang-una, hindi muna siguro ako magsalita about reconciliation dahil hindi naman mahalaga siguro ang mga personal na problema... Ang mas mahalaga is 'yong taumbayan at iyong bayan natin,' she told reporters during an ambush interview at The Hague. (First of all, I don't think I should speak about reconciliation for now because personal problems are not important. What's more important is the people and our country.) VP Sara's comment comes days after Marcos disclosed that he is open to reconciling with the Dutertes. ''Oo, ako, ayoko ng gulo. Gusto ko magkasundo sa lahat ng tao. Mas maganda. Marami na kong kaaway, hindi ko kailangan ng kaaway, kailangan ko kaibigan,'' Marcos said in an interview with broadcaster Anthony Taberna. (I don't want trouble. I want to get along with everyone. It's better. I already have many enemies, I don't need enemies, I need friends.) READ: Uniteam no more: Timeline of Marcos-Duterte tandem's woes Dad wants to take oath VP Sara was in the Netherlands to visit her father, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, who is detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague due to crimes against humanity charges. She said she was able to see her father for an hour on Friday and that they talked about Eleksyon 2025. 'Na-share ko... na nanalo iyong dalawang PDP Laban na senator candidates, tapos iyong isang guest candidate - si (Rodante) Marcoleta, plus dalawang guest candidates from Alyansa, si Senator Camille Villar at Senator Imee Marcos.' (I shared that two PDP Laban senator candidates won, along with guest candidate Rodante Marcoleta and two guest candidates from Alyansa – Senators Camille Villar and Imee Marcos.) She also mentioned that her father wants to take his oath after winning the mayoral race in Davao. 'I want... Set me free and I will take an oath,' Sara said quoting, her father. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) earlier said it will ask the ICC to allow the former President to take oath as Davao City mayor while he is in detention in The Hague. SWS survey Duterte also addressed the recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey in which 88% of respondents said it was important for her to face the impeachment proceedings and answer the allegations. 'Oh, I totally agree. Kasama ako doon sa 88% na iyan... thankful sa opportunity na malinis iyong pangalan ko at masagot iyong mga akusasyon sa akin,' she said. (I totally agree. I'm part of that 88%... I'm thankful for the opportunity to clear my name and respond to the accusations against me.) The Vice President also said that the Senate's decision to move the presentation of the articles of impeachment hearings to June 11 has no effect on her. 'Wala naman siyang epekto sa akin... Iiwan na namin iyan sa mga lawyers namin, sa defense impeachment lawyers,' explained Duterte. (It has no effect on me... we'll leave that to our lawyers, the defense impeachment lawyers.) Imee The Vice President, meanwhile, also mentioned that Senator Imee Marcos, who is also currently at The Hague, was not permitted to visit her father. 'Hindi siya pinayagan ng ICC na makabisita at makausap si dating Pangulong Rodrigoe, she said. (I mentioned that she was not allowed by the ICC to visit and speak with former President Duterte.) Sara said her father was hoping to speak with Senator Marcos, but he is hopeful that there will be "another time." 'Unang-una, nagpasalamat siya. At pangalawa, sabi niya gusto nga daw niya sanang makausap si Senator Imee kaso hindi nga daw payagan pero sabi niya, 'There will be another time for that.'' (He was thankful. He wanted to talk to Senator Imee but wasn't allowed. He said, 'There will be another time for that.) —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Posts falsely claim outdated ballot template proves Philippine election fraud
A TikTok video posted April 14 shows an image of a sample ballot and highlights three senatorial candidates from PDP Laban, Duterte's political party: arrested pastor Apollo Quiboloy, former presidential secretary Vic Rodriguez and actor Phillip Salvador. The purported ballot lists Quiboloy at No. 52, Rodriguez at No. 55 and Salvador at No. 57. The video then juxtaposes this with the party's official campaign posters, which show numbers that are one higher for each candidate (archived link). "The numbers shown for three PDP-Laban candidates became different. Beware," says the video's Tagalog caption, suggesting the Comelec altered the PDP Laban candidates' ballot numbers in an attempt to confuse voters. Several other posts on Facebook and TikTok reshared the claim. Campaigning began in February in the Philippines for midterm elections that could set the table for the next presidential race and determine the political future of impeached Vice President Sara Duterte (archived link). Talk show hosts, movie stars and a preacher jailed on sex trafficking charges are among the candidates vying for a dozen open Senate seats. While the vote will fill more than 18,000 posts nationwide, it is the would-be senators who are facing a duty few bargained for -- serving as jurists in the impeachment trial of Rodrigo Duterte's eldest daughter. The vice president, whose alliance with President Ferdinand Marcos has imploded spectacularly, was impeached by the House of Representatives on February 5 on charges of "violation of the constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and other high crimes". Comments on the posts alleging election malfeasance indicate some users believed the claim. "Cheating starts now," one user wrote. Another said: "What is this Comelec, type of error?" But the posts share an older version of the official ballot template. A Google reverse image search shows the video corresponds to an earlier template version the Comelec unveiled to the public on January 5 (archived link). While this version did show Quiboloy at No. 52, Rodriguez at No. 55 and Salvador at No. 57, the Comelec later updated the ballot to reflect changes in the list of senatorial candidates. On January 14, the Supreme Court ruled to add Subair Guinthum Mustapha to the ballot after it stopped the Comelec from disqualifying him for being a nuisance candidate (archived links here and here). As a result, the Comelec had to reprint the ballots. The commission also updated the templates on its website (archived links here and here). On February 24, PDP Laban's verified Facebook page showed candidates Quiboloy, Rodriguez and Salvador had moved one spot lower (archived link). Ballot changes also affected some of the senatorial candidates under President Ferdinand Marcos's New Philippines Alliance -- not only the three PDP Laban candidates, as the posts falsely claim (archived link). The total number of senatorial contenders remained at 66 after candidate Chavit Singson dropped from the race on January 16 (archived link). AFP contacted the Comelec for comment, but a response was not forthcoming. AFP has fact-checked misinformation related to the 2025 midterm elections here.

Rappler Facebook post altered to falsely show Philippines councillor turning on impeached VP
The screenshot of the purported Rappler Facebook post was shared on the same platform on March 20. It features a link to a supposed Rappler article with an image of Balaba with Sara Duterte as the thumbnail. The post appears to read: "Joyleen Mercedes 'Girlie' Balaba, a Cagayan de Oro city councilor, says 'I am happy about the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte because she is the one who has been interrupting my relationship with Digong'." Digong is the popular nickname for former president Rodrigo Duterte. The post began circulating on Facebook on February 7, a day after the Philippines' House of Representatives voted to impeach his daughter, Sara, charging her with "violation of the constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and other high crimes" (archived link). Balaba is vying for re-election to a councillor seat in Cagayan de Oro city under Duterte's PDP Laban in upcoming May mid-term elections that will determine 12 Senate seats and thousands of smaller positions across the archipelago nation of 117 million (archived link). Social media users appeared to be duped by the altered Rappler Facebook post. "It's election season, politicians have become two-faced again," read one comment. "Rappler is such a fake news peddler", another said. Balaba has in fact defended Sara Duterte after her impeachment, according to Philippines media reports (archived links here and here). Keyword searches of Rappler's verified Facebook page shows an article featuring the photo of Balaba and Duterte was shared twice, on September 24 and 25, 2021 (archived links here, here and here). The article is headlined, "Duterte's Girlie to run for Congress in Cagayan de Oro, congressman says". Similarly, the post reads, "But Joyleen Mercedes 'Girlie' Balaba, a first-term Cagayan de Oro city councilor, says she prefers to seek reelection. #PHVote #WeDecide". Rappler told AFP on April 11 that "this is a manipulated post" and released a statement on its Facebook page warning the public about the altered screenshot (archived link). Balaba also posted a statement on Facebook on February 10 that branded the screenshot as "fake news" (archived link). Sara Duterte backed Balaba's candidacy in 2019 when she first ran for councillor (archived link).
