Currie Cup result: Boland stun Cheetahs in Wellington

Both teams scored five tries in a hugely entertaining game.
The Boland Cavaliers got their 2025 Currie Cup campaign off to the perfect start when they stunned the Cheetahs 37-35 in their opening game in Wellington on Sunday afternoon.
Hawies Fourie's team qualified for the top-eight Premier Division of the Currie Cup after performing well in the SA Cup competition some months ago.
The newcomers to the Premier Division dominated the opening half of the match and led 27-14 at half-time.
But the Cheetahs responded with an energised second half performance and looked to have sewn the match up deep into the half. But two late tries by the Bolanders, the final one well into over-time, secured a dramatic win for Fourie and his charges.
Both teams scored five tries in a hugely entertaining game.
The Cheetahs' coaching staff of Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar will not be happy after their side got back into the game in the second half, just to give it away at the end.
The Cheetahs are next up against the Pumas at home on Friday, while Boland take on Griquas in Kimberley next Sunday.
In the other matches this weekend, the Pumas beat Griquas 49-28 in Mbombela, the Lions beat the Sharks 46-5 in Joburg and the Bulls beat Western Province 48-23 in Cape Town.

All Blacks pick ONE uncapped player everyone is talking about

New Zealand head coach Scott Robertson on Monday named one uncapped player in his squad for the Rugby Championship, which begins this month when the All Blacks play back-back Tests in Argentina. Chiefs flanker Simon Parker was included for the first time for the opening match against the Pumas in Cordoba on August 16. 'Simon Parker had an impressive Super Rugby season with the Chiefs and brings a valuable skill set and physicality that we are looking forward to working with,' Robertson said. 'He has the ability to play blindside or No 8 and has gained experience in a number of New Zealand representative teams, so we believe he is ready for the step up.' Robertson named three uncapped players as injury cover – prop Tevita Mafileo, scrumhalf Kyle Preston and versatile back Leroy Carter. Tyrel Lomax, Luke Jacobson, Cam Roigard, Noah Hotham and Caleb Clarke will not travel because of injury. 'While we are clearly disappointed for our men who are currently recovering from injuries, that has also created opportunities for a number of deserving players,' Robertson said. 'These players have earned the opportunity through consistent performance, and we know that they will take this chance. 'It is also fantastic to have Tamaiti Williams and Wallace Sititi returning from their injuries, as well as welcoming Peter Lakai, Finlay Christie and Josh Lord back into the group.' Currie Cup wrap: Lions, Bulls record statement wins

The Sharks and Western Province are the only two teams yet to register a win in this season's competition. The Lions are properly back to winning ways after registering a second good victory in this year's Currie Cup competition. Mziwakhe Nkosi's team followed up their first-round demolition of the Sharks (46-5) with another thumping win against Western Province (40-19) on Saturday to be two from two at this early stage of the competition. It is a powerful statement following the team's struggles in the United Rugby Championship where the Lions failed to finish in the top eight for a place in the quarter-finals. While Nkosi said he was pleased with the result and performance at Ellis Park on Saturday, he was not happy with the team's ill-discipline at times. 'The result was good for us and the performance was good in patches. I thought our breakdown showing was better than the week before but there was ill-discipline, but that's an easy fix fortunately … hands in the ruck, not rolling away, off-sides at the edges. Each guy must just take responsibility.' He added that keeping Western Province to 19 points meant the Lions 'did one or two things right'. Wins for Bulls, Cheetahs and Griquas The Lions are next up against Boland, in their first away match of the campaign. They square off in Wellington on Sunday. Sitting at the top of the points table with the Lions are their northern neighbours, the Bulls, who've also recorded two big wins so far. After opening up their campaign with a 48-23 away win against Western Province in Cape Town, they smashed the Sharks 64-0 at Loftus Versfeld this last Saturday. The Sharks, like all the teams who have a URC side, are backing their younger players during the Currie Cup, but there will be some concerns that they have won conceded 110 points in two matches and scored just one try. The Bulls are next up against the Pumas in Pretoria in what should be an intriguing match. The Pumas from Mbombela always put up a fight against the Bulls and they'll be keen to hit back after suffering a loss against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Friday (42-25). They'll hope to find the form that saw them beat Griquas 49-28 in round one. There was, however, relief in Bloemfontein that the Cheetahs picked up a victory, after their first-round loss to Boland in Wellington. They're third on the points table, with seven points, three behind the co-leaders, the Bulls and Lions. In the final game of the round, in Kimberley on Sunday, Griquas hit back in some style to edge Boland in a thrilling 14-try contest, winning 48-39. Full points table This week's fixtures Friday: Griquas v WP 3pm Saturday: Bulls v Pumas 3pm, Sharks v Cheetahs 5.10pm Sunday: Boland v Lions 3pm

Currie Cup result: Griquas rally to stun Boland in 14-try thriller

In round three, Griquas host winless Western Province in Kimberley on Friday afternoon, while Boland return to Wellington for a clash with the unbeaten Lions on Sunday. Two quickfire tries from scrumhalf Caleb Abrahams sparked a Griquas comeback to beat the Boland Kavaliers in Kimberley on Sunday. Griquas logged their first win of the 2025 Currie Cup, scoring five second-half tries to bounce back from a 34-19 deficit at the break and win 48-39. Abrahams was matched by winger Gurshwin Wehr's try double while flyhalf George Whitehead starred off the tee, contributing 14 points to cancel out a brace of tries from Boland's Blitzboks flyer, Donovan Don. The hosts opened the scoring through winger Dylan Maart, but Boland replied swiftly. Lunathi Nxele crossed the line and fullback James Tedder converted to give the visitors the lead. Griquas regained control when flanker Lourens Oosthuizen powered over. Wehr then struck for Boland, before a strong finish to the half gave the visitors a 34-19 advantage. Tedder slotted a penalty, followed by tries from Blitzbok duo Don, who scored twice, and David Brits. Marcqiewn Titus added another as Boland surged clear. Griquas responded immediately after the break. Abrahams dotted down twice in quick succession, and Wehr added his second to push Griquas back in front at 36-34. Don added three points for Boland, but Griquas hooker Tiaan Lange crashed over to restore the home lead at 41-39. Flyhalf George Whitehead's composure in front of the sticks helped steer Griquas clear. Lock Derik Pretorius sealed the result with the team's fifth try of the half, wrapping up a spirited comeback.
