Unlike a genuine all-rounder who merits a spot in the XI on either batting or bowling, Washington strengthens his case as a complete package—a bowler who can bat or a batter who can bowl. Say it whichever way you like; the order doesn't change what he brings to the table. The role might change as per the team's demands, but his value won't, and the overall impact remains the same.
He may not be as intimidating as your regular match-winner, but the contributions are so invaluable that they often alter the complexion of the game.
And Lord's was no different.

First, a crucial 23 with the bat, and then a match-defining spell of 4/22 with the ball meant the Washington package again had a big say.
He was drafted into the Playing XI at Edgbaston to lend batting depth and do the holding job with the ball. In just one game's time, he not only continued to play the role with the bat but moved into a leading act with the ball. On a pitch that had inconsistent bounce, Washington kept firing at the stumps, and subtle variations ensured the English batters had no response to his darts.

The off-spinner used the drift and just enough turn to disturb the woodwork of Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Ben Stokes, and Shoaib Bashir. The first three wickets ensured India never allowed England to get away with the bat. He stuck to what bowling coach Morne Morkel had urged his quicks to do—keep attacking the stumps—and on the Day 4 Lord's pitch, which had a lot for both pacers and spinners, it turned out to be the right recipe for success.
In just 12.1 overs, the 25-year-old derailed the England innings and never allowed them to stage a fightback on one of his most memorable days with the red ball.
Yuvraj Singh hits out at media at YWC Gala, lauds Shubman Gill's sublime form
"One of the best days with the ball for me, especially outside of India. Had some solid plans coming into this Test match and really wanted to execute them both in the first and second innings. Wanted to contribute to the team in different passages of play. Very heartening how the day turned out for both me and the team," said Washington in the post-day press conference.
The Smith wicket was the pick of the lot—not only because it was a special delivery, but because it dismissed a batter who had troubled India in the last two Tests.
"God was very kind. He was a very important wicket for us, considering the amount of runs he has already scored in the series. The ball came out very well out of my hand. It was important for me to hit the right areas, and I was able to do that today," explained Washington.
It's no secret anymore that the all-rounder enjoys strong backing from head coach Gautam Gambhir. And it's not just the current management—even the predecessors, led by
Rahul Dravid
and
Ravi Shastri
, always looked in his direction for insurance—either with the bat or ball.
More often than not, he has delivered the goods and continues to be the penny stock with very strong fundamentals and a chart enticing enough to tempt the regular punts. His outings, however, have ensured it's not a gamble anymore but a calculated risk. And when the risk pays off—like it did at Lord's on Day 4—the returns remain in green!

Kaushik's 31-ball 95 powers Mavericks to massive win

Lucknow: Madhav Kaushik's explosive 31-ball 95, followed by disciplined bowling, powered Meerut Mavericks to a flying start in the 3rd UPT20 League, crushing Kanpur Superstars by 86 runs at the Ekana Stadium on Sunday. After a star-studded opening ceremony featuring Bollywood celebrities, which charged up the atmosphere, Madhav took it to another level with seven towering sixes and 10 exquisite boundaries. After Kanpur slumped to 30/5 in eight overs, Madhav added an unbeaten 130-run stand for the third wicket with Rituraj Sharma (60 off 26) to take Meerut to a formidable 225/2. In reply, Kanpur never looked in the contest as their batters struggled against the immaculate line and length of Meerut's bowlers. Skipper Sameer Rizvi (45) fought a lone battle, but with wickets tumbling regularly, he found no support from the other end. Once the top order collapsed, Kanpur's defeat seemed inevitable as they were restricted to 139/9, losing by 86 runs. The night truly belonged to Kaushik, who played a scintillating knock but unluckily missed out on a well-deserved century off the final ball. Having hit the previous two deliveries for a four and a six to move to 94, he needed another six off Bobby Yadav's last ball but managed only a single, falling just short of becoming the fourth centurion in UPT20 League history after Swastik Chikara, Sameer Rizvi, and Karan Sharma. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Sharma struck four fours and four sixes in his 60-run blitz, while opener Akashay Dubey provided a solid start with 44, including two fours and four sixes. The two Kanpur wickets to fall were claimed by Shubham Mishra and Bobby Yadav. For Meerut, every bowler chipped in, with Vijay Kumar, Kartik Tyagi, and Yash Garg taking two wickets each, while skipper Rinku Singh, who did not get to bat, also claimed one wicket with his off-spin in two overs. Bollywood glitz marks grand opening The opening ceremony featured performances by Bollywood singer Sunidhi Chauhan, actresses Disha Patani and Tamannaah Bhatia, and actor Sidharth Malhotra. The event was inaugurated by BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla and UPT20 governing council chairman DS Chauhan. "The UPT20 League provides a great platform for UP players to push for Indian Premier League (IPL) selection. This is the third season, and we are confident that more players will earn IPL berths this time," said Shukla. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Coco Gauff opens old family album for Corey Gauff's birthday and writes an emotional message about her journey (Image Via Google) Coco Gauff took a pause from her busy tennis schedule to share a very personal message for her father, Corey Gauff, on his birthday. On Monday, August 18, 2025, the 21-year-old American posted two unseen photos on her Instagram story showing herself as a child standing beside her father on a tennis court and later relaxing at a beach in Florida. Along with the photos, Coco Gauff wrote a brief but clear note calling Corey Gauff her "dream fueler" and expressing thanks to her father for consistently supporting her in her tennis career. For her fans, this was a particularly unique post because the two-time Grand Slam champion rarely posts family memories. Coco Gauff praises Corey Gauff with touching words and sweet throwback pictures Coco Gauff posted the first picture early in the morning on Monday and wrote, 'Happy birthday to the best to ever do it, the man with a plan, and my dream fueler. I love you dad @coreygauff.' The second Instagram story showed the father-daughter duo at a beach and read, 'From the courts straight to the beach, lol the real & best Florida tennis dad.' These words gave a small look into their close bond. In a recent interview with The National, Coco Gauff said that her father never forced her to play tennis and that the dream was always her own. She added, 'He was always asking, 'How can I help her accomplish her dreams?'' The American tennis star also shared that Corey Gauff would have supported any decision she made, even if it was outside of tennis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo Also Read: Khamzat Chimaev Breaks Silence On His In Fight Message To Dricus Du Plessis At UFC 319 And It Could Change How The Fight Is Viewed Corey Gauff's support continues as Coco Gauff prepares for her next challenge In a brief period, Corey Gauff definitely helped Coco Gauff have a spectacular run in the WTA rankings. Arsenal wins 1-0 at Man United as Chelsea held by Palace in Premier League

Arsenal kept at bay Manchester United's expensively assembled forward line and scored again from a set piece to win 1-0 in the marquee match in the opening round of the Premier League on Sunday (August 17, 2025). Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori nodded in from close range in the 13th minute after United back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir — starting ahead of Andre Onana — flapped at the ball from a corner whipped in by Declan Rice. While Arsenal followed likely title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in claiming an opening-weekend victory, United fell to a loss that is all-to-familiar under Ruben Amorim following a woeful 15th-place finish last season by English soccer's fallen giant. United spent around 200 million pounds ($270 million) on revamping its attack in the offseason, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha starting the match and Benjamin Sesko coming off the bench in the second half. While the team played with a good intensity at Old Trafford, Arsenal's strong defence stood firm. At the other end, Viktor Gyokeres endured a difficult first competitive start for Arsenal, whose goal came from a familiar route with Mikel Arteta's team so imposing from set-piece situations in recent seasons. Chelsea also failed to score in its opening league game, held 0-0 by Crystal Palace in its first competitive match as the club world champion. A month after stunning Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final, Chelsea toiled at Stamford Bridge after a short preseason because of its exertions in the United States. Eze's farewell? Eberechi Eze has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham so the England midfielder might have been making his final appearance for Palace. He almost marked it with a goal. In the 13th minute, Eze smashed a direct free kick past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from the edge of the area but the goal was ruled out after a video review spotted an infringement by Palace captain Marc Guehi as he attempted to push aside Chelsea's Moises Caicedo in the defensive wall. The Premier League confirmed Guehi was standing less than one meter (yard) from the wall as the shot was taken, which is not allowed. Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer, stars for Chelsea in the Club World Cup, were quiet. The hosts lacked intensity because they've only been back in training for a couple of weeks, while Palace has had a long preseason and was coming off beating Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield last weekend. Wood starts hot for Forest Nottingham Forest hit the ground running with a 3-1 win over Brentford, with striker Chris Wood — the team's top scorer last season with 20 goals — netting twice in the first half either side of a goal on debut by Dan Ndoye. Wood started quickly last season in the best goalscoring top-flight campaign of his career and he needed just five minutes to open his account this time round, making the most of a poor clearance at a corner to poke home a finish. Ndoye headed in a second in the 42nd minute and Wood rounded the goalkeeper in first-half stoppage time to stroke in a third. Igor Thiago converted a late penalty for a consolation for Brentford, which might struggle this season after selling star forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United and not having first-choice striker Yoane Wissa available. Wissa has been linked with a move to Newcastle. Jota tribute All matches on Sunday featured a period of silence before kickoff as a tribute to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, the brothers who were killed in a car crash in Spain last month. Jota was a player for Liverpool at the time.
