Former Wisconsin basketball guard, leading scorer reenters transfer portal
NEWS: Kansas wing AJ Storr has entered the transfer portal, sources told ESPN. Averaged 6.1 points this season after averaging 16.8 points as a sophomore at Wisconsin in 2023-24. — Jeff Borzello (@jeffborzello) April 3, 2025
Former Wisconsin guard A.J. Storr has reentered the transfer portal, as first reported by ESPN's Jeff Borzello.
Storr spent the 2024-25 season at Kansas after a high-profile decision to transfer away from Wisconsin last offseason. The veteran guard struggled to find a consistent role with the Jayhawks, averaging just 15.7 minutes, 6.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game while shooting a career-low 38.4% from the floor and 29% from 3.
His struggles coincided with a down year from the team. After entering the season ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll, it went just 21-13 (11-9 Big 12) and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Storr had some strong performances to close the campaign, including 19 points against UCF in the Big 12 Tournament and 15 against Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament. But the guard's season was largely defined by an 18-game stretch from Jan. 8 to March 8 during which he surpassed double-digit points only once.
Assuming Storr doesn't transfer back to Wisconsin or St. John's, his first collegiate stop, next year will mark four teams in as many seasons for the former four-star recruit.
Storr was Wisconsin's key transfer addition entering the 2023-24 season. Starting at guard for a team that had missed the NCAA Tournament in 2022-23, he averaged 16.8 points (team-high) and 3.9 rebounds in 28.8 minutes of action per game. His play on the offensive was a key reason for the Badgers' 16-4 (8-1 Big Ten) start. However, the team would go on to lose seven of its last nine to close the regular season and fall in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Storr and star point guard Chucky Hepburn each transferred out following that final defeat.
Wisconsin replaced their minutes and production with transfer wing John Tonje and an increased role for ascending guard John Blackwell. The two led the Badgers to a resurgent 2024-25 season -- a 27-10 overall record, NCAA Tournament No. 3-seed and No. 12 finish in KenPom.
Storr, as noted, did not experience similar success after withdrawing his name from the NBA draft and joining the Jayhawks last offseason. Instead of again testing the NBA draft waters, the veteran guard appears set for a final collegiate season.

Islam Makhachev: Charles Oliveira has 'big chance' to upset Ilia Topuria at UFC 317

Islam Makhachev thinks sees the UFC 317 main event between Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira as a coin toss. Topuria and Oliveira will fight for the vacant lightweight title left behind by Makhachev in his move to welterweight when they meet in Saturday's headliner at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Makhachev will be watching closely to see who begins the next era at 155 pounds, but former featherweight champ Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) enters as the heavy betting favorite over Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC), who held the belt previously. "It depends who can follow his game plan," Makhachev told MMA Junkie. "If Charles can take him down, he can finish him easy on the ground. Or, if Topuria can catch him, he's going to sleep. It's two options. Who is going to make the game plan work?" Of the two, Makhachev has only shared the octagon with Oliveira. He submitted the Brazilian in a dominant performance for his first UFC title win in October 2022, and since then "Do Bronx" has won two of thee fights. The undefeated record, punching power and stellar technique of Topuria can't be underestimated, but Makhachev sees traits from Oliveira that could open up his path to victory. "(Oliveira has a) big chance," Makhachev said. "He always fights good against strikers. He has good striking. Against (Dustin) Poirier he fought good, against (Michael) Chandler he fought good – both have good punch, both very good at stand up. But if you give him small chance, he's going to finish. That's why Charles is always dangerous. So I'll go 50/50." Although Topuria vs. Oliveira is one of the more anticipated matchups of the 2025 UFC schedule thus far, Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) couldn't help but take a jab at two men he's had contentious moments with in the past. "I feel bad, man – nobody speak about International Fight Week," Makhachev joked. "Nobody speak about main event."

USC baseball loses outfielder Brayden Dowd to transfer portal

Coming off the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade, USC baseball suffered a major loss earlier this month when ace pitcher Caden Aoki entered the transfer portal. This week, the Trojans lost another key player to the portal in outfielder Brayden Dowd. As a sophomore this year, Dowd started 57 of USC's 60 games. He finished the season batting .324 with 10 home runs, 36 RBIs, and a .970 OPS. Losing Dowd is certainly a big blow for a Trojans program looking to improve off of this year's run. The Trojans made it to the final of the Corvallis Regional, where they fell to Oregon State. Now, they will need to replace a lot of production in the outfield as they look to build off of this year's run. USC has made great progress in three seasons under head coach Andy Stankiewicz, but the program still has a long way to go in terms of competing with the country's elite. Expect Stankiewicz to attack the transfer portal hard this offseason as the Trojans look to turn their roster from one of a tournament team into a legitimate national contender.

Former UNC football star praised by ESPN, his OC ahead of rookie NFL season

Will Omarion Hampton be the next UNC football star in the NFL? Ashton Jeanty stole headlines over the past two college football seasons, but right behind him was another star-studded running back in Chapel Hill: Omarion Hampton. Starting 2023 behind British Brooks on UNC's depth chart, Hampton became the full-time starter by Week 3. Hampton formed a deadly offensive duo with Drake Maye during 2023, forcing opposing defenses to choose how they'd slow the Tar Heel stars down, then Hampton became the feature of North Carolina's offense in 2024. With a distinguished college career that included 3,565 rushing yards 36 rushing touchdowns, Hampton's NFL suitors quickly took notice. The Los Angeles Chargers selected Hampton with this year's 22nd overall pick, pairing him with offseason acquisition Najee Harris. Through roughly two months of offseason activities, Hampton is proving to be plenty worthy of his draft selection. Check out what ESPN and Hampton's offensive coordinator, Greg Roman, said about the rookie back from Chapel Hill: "Hampton has been the talk of the Chargers' offseason activities, for his play on the field and his physical stature," ESPN's Kris Rihm wrote. "At Hampton's introductory news conference, coach Jim Harbaugh jokingly grabbed his 6-foot, 221-pound rookie by the shoulders and said to reporters, "That looks like a football player, right?" "He's the total package," offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. "You don't see a lot of guys find a hole like he's doing right now." Harris should be LA's Day One starter, rushing for over 1,000 yards in each of his first four NFL seasons, but Hampton could form an unstoppable 1-2 punch with his new backfield mate.
