As the Betway Premiership nears the end of the season, Mamelodi Sundowns are on the verge of clinching an unprecedented eighth consecutive title.
With just five matches remaining, Sundowns need seven points to secure the championship. The stakes could not be higher as they chase success amid fierce competition from second-placed Orlando Pirates.
Currently, Sundowns boast a superior goal difference to Pirates. This means that even a return of six points could seal the title for Miguel Cardoso's side — potentially as early as this Sunday.
The pressure is on Pirates to maintain form as they prepare for a crucial encounter against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Tuesday. Any dropped points could pave the way for Sundowns to claim the title, especially as they host Chippa United on Wednesday and Stellenbosch on Sunday, with both fixtures set to take place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Both title contenders — Sundowns and Pirates — face off-field distractions that could impact their focus. Pirates are gearing up for a Nedbank Cup final against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in Durban on Saturday. This monumental clash may stretch their concentration as they also look to sustain their Premiership title challenge.
Sundowns are not without their own distractions, with the looming CAF Champions League final against Egypt's Pyramids FC scheduled at the end of May. With three league fixtures to play before that crucial encounter, the challenge for Sundowns' coaching staff will be to keep the players mentally sharp and physically prepared for the back-to-back games that could define their season.
One of the key concerns for Sundowns is the fitness of prolific striker Peter Shalulile, who was conspicuously absent from the squad that played in Cape Town on Saturday evening. Coach Miguel Cardoso explained that the club had opted to rest Shalulile to aid his full recovery.
'When we went to Cairo (for the Al Ahly game), Peter had a small injury that wouldn't take long to heal and allow him to become a part of us again for the long term,' said Cardoso.
'That condition needs a little bit of time, and we decided to prioritise his full recovery rather than bring him on for 20, 15, or 10 minutes and risk his health. We will let him recover, and when he is 100% fine, he will be with us — and that will be pretty soon.'

In the background of this title race, the league has undergone a significant shift following the official expulsion of Royal AM from the PSL. The decision has led to the expunging of points from the standings, effectively reducing the season to a 28-match campaign rather than the usual 30.
This change adds another layer of complexity to the title race, as clubs adjust to a new points structure that could significantly impact the final standings — particularly for those aiming to secure places in the lucrative Top 8 competition.

Kaizer Chiefs miss out on star Portuguese-based defender?

Kaizer Chiefs may have just let a potential defensive gem slip through their fingers. South African right-back Mhleli Mabuza completed a week-long trial at Naturena, but the club has yet to make a move, raising eyebrows among supporters. The 24-year-old, known for his attacking flair and European pedigree, now looks set to pursue new opportunities after Chiefs' puzzling silence. Mabuza, who spent time training under the watchful eyes of the Chiefs' technical team, saw his assessment coincide with the final two matches of the Betway Premiership season, a period typically focused on squad closure rather than scouting. Despite this timing, hopes remained high that Amakhosi would follow up. But no offer has arrived. 'He has an offer from Portugal which he must act on before the end of June. But there's also interest locally from a number of other clubs,' a source revealed to the publication FARPost . Before returning for the Chiefs trial, Mabuza completed a standout season in Portugal. He played for Louletano DC, where he not only anchored the defence but also contributed a stunning nine assists, earning the title of Best Right-Back in the Campeonato de Portugal. His performances didn't go unnoticed. A newly-promoted Portuguese third-tier club has already tabled a contract offer. Mabuza moved to Europe back in 2018 after impressing in friendly matches. His journey in Portugal wasn't easy, but his development has been clear. 'It was not easy. The style of play, the language, the culture, everything was different,' he admitted. While Kaizer Chiefs remain undecided, other PSL clubs are circling. AmaZulu FC, TS Galaxy, and Sekhukhune United are all reportedly monitoring the situation closely. Mabuza's contract with Louletano has officially expired, making him a free agent and an attractive option for local sides looking to strengthen their defence without transfer fees. However, the European offer comes with a ticking clock, the deal must be finalised before 30 June. The question now is. Will Kaizer Chiefs step up, or will they let another star walk away? Confirmed: Orlando Pirates to announce new player

Orlando Pirates fans have a new right-back to call their own. Tshepho Mashiloane is coming to Soweto. This will spell new competition for Deano Van Rooyen and Bandile Shandu. As reported in previous weeks, the Sea Robbers signed the 23-year-old Baroka FC star for the 2025/26 Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League. While the Orlando Pirates have yet to announce the news, Baroka FC's chairman, Khurishi Mphahlele, has confirmed that the deal has been completed. 'We still got to pay Mashiloane until the end of June, but Orlando Pirates have purchased Mashiloane for the coming season, not this season,' Mphahlele told iDiski Times . Image: IOL 'But if Pirates want Mashiloane earlier there's no problem we've got an agreement with Pirates. We can always make provision for that, but we are going to pay Mashiloane at the end of June because his contract ends at the end of June and the Pirates contract begins on the first of July. Sundowns star gives back to boys at his former school 'From the first of July he is an Orlando Pirates player, until then he's still our player and we pay him.'
