Hamilton care home chef triumphs in national awards

Abbeydale Court head chef Robert Sorbie tasted success as he was crowned the overall winner at the nationwide Great British care awards
A Hamilton chef has been named the best in Britain for the special menus he creates for residents at a local care home.
Robert Sorbie tasted success at the national final of the prestigious Great British care awards, where he was served up with the title of national chef of the year in recognition of his work at Abbeydale Court on Strathaven Road.

He impressed judges with his themed celebration menus and freshly-prepared meals, with his delighted colleagues saying: 'This award reflects the love and care he pours into every plate he serves.'

Robert, who has been head chef at Abbeydale Court for the past eight years, took the top award after qualifying for the UK final by winning the Scotland and North-East regional heat in November – and then went on to take the national crown at the overall finals in Birmingham, hosted by Vernon Kay.
He said: 'I was judged on various skills which included producing and presenting meals prepared for events throughout the year such as Burns night, Valentine's day, Easter, St Patrick's day, Halloween, St Andrew's day, Christmas and new year – themed nights give me great pleasure and satisfaction, and all meals are prepared and cooked with fresh produce.
'I was interviewed by a panel of professional judges and was fortunate be selected as regional winner and I was very excited to reach the national stage of the competition. Winning is a great achievement and filled me with a sense of pride and joy to bring the award back to Hamilton [and] the residents of Abbeydale Court.'
Robert first began his culinary career aged 16 as an apprentice baker, attending college part-time to earn his qualifications and within six years having progressed to become an assistant manager.
He then enrolled in evening courses at Glasgow College of food technology, gaining professional cookery qualifications including an HNC and HND on his way to becoming a chef, going on to become a pastry chef at Strathclyde University's former Jordanhill campus.

Robert worked his way up to sous chef and eventually to head chef, spending an impressive 21 years in the role before moving into his current role at the Hamilton care home where he is a popular member of staff and has been celebrated by colleagues, residents and families.
A spokesperson for Abbeydale Court said: 'Robert's win is a remarkable achievement for the entire Hamilton community. This prestigious national accolade recognises exceptional talent and dedication within the care sector [and he] competed against some of the best chefs in care settings across the UK, emerging as the national winner.

'Robert is renowned for his passion for food and commitment to improving the lives of elderly residents through creative, nutritious, and person-centred meals.
'His meals are about more than nourishment – they're about comfort, memory and community, and his approach goes far beyond the kitchen; he sees food as a tool to enhance wellbeing, bring joy, and uphold the dignity of those in care.'
Abbeydale's spokesperson added: 'His win shines a spotlight on the important role catering plays in social care and serves as an inspiration for chefs and care professionals nationwide.

'The team at Abbeydale Court, along with residents and families, are immensely proud of Robert's achievement – an inspiring example of excellence in care right at the heart of Hamilton.
Head chef Robert has worked at the 109-bed home since November 2016 and delights residents with not only a fresh, homemade daily menu, but also 'takes pride in preparing food for family occasions, birthday celebrations, and private dining experiences for residents and their loved ones'.
Judges described him as 'an asset to the care sector' as he impressed with his wide and varied menus, worthwhile mealtimes, healthy food choices, catering for special dietary requirements, hygiene and sustainability, as well as using local produce and linking in with residents' activities.
They praised his 'passion for culinary excellence and his dedication to bringing joy to residents' – and his award citation ahead of the final read: 'He is always looking ahead to the next internal event to ensure it's a memorable experience for both residents and their families, and adapts day-to-day menus freely to ensure everyone's nutritional needs are met.'

As for the plot with Seb, Mike shared: "That was my first question. "I thought surely either we are gonna be fighting over this kid or we will try to get him back. I don't know which I would rather, I mean I tried to shoot him, he stole my weed the last time he was there. ‌ "They are always fighting but they might be a good team to work together, and maybe it would be good if they did join forces." Mike also addressed the return of Robert, saying it was exciting for the fans. He shared: "When you get a character who you maybe haven't always been involved with but you know it's gonna be a huge positive for the show, it's going to be huge. For the audience it's so important, and it's someone they're loud over. "I knew that they would be over the moon and I'm so happy for them." Viewers are hoping for a Robron reunion for Robert and Aaron now that they are both back in the village. It's not just viewers though, with stars Natalie J Robb and Bradley Riches clearly backing the reunion too. They told us at the awards: "Hashtag Robron!"

Martin Scorsese admits one of his most iconic 90s films 'has no plot'

Martin Scorsese has opened up about making one of his most iconic films, confessing that it actually has 'no plot'. The acclaimed director helmed 1995 crime drama Casino, starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone, Don Rickles and Frank Vincent, following mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein as he oversees the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. It was adapted from a book written by Nick Pileggi, and commands an exhausting run time of nearly three hours. Unpacking the hit movie, Martin previously said that there was 'no plot at all' to be found within the two hours and 58 minutes, conceding that there's 'a lot of action, a lot of story, but no plot'. During a Q&A session with Robert ahead of a screening of the flick at Tribeca Film Festival, held at the Beacon Theater on Thursday, moderator W Kamau Bell questioned his remarks, and he stood his ground. 'Yeah, it's a substantial length film,' he said to laughs from the audience. 'We wanted to sustain one note, so to speak, pushing all the way through the length of the picture. Make it feel as if it's like a breathless experience. 'I don't know if the plot was necessary… I often think films that you think about, or things you've read often, if you really examine them, I find that a lot of the films that I [like], let's say Hitchcock's Vertigo, for example, who cares about the plot at this point? 'Also, if you really, really analyze that plot, it's highly improbable!' 'What are we watching it for? You're watching it for other reasons,' Martin continued. 'You're watching it for cinema, color, the actors, the dialog, the mood, the tone and experience… 'What I'm getting at is that I think if you find that you're watching a film for a plot, or you read a book for a plot, unless the characterization is so unique in psychological depth and emotional depth, there's no reason to read it again or see it again, because you know the plot. 'So what's the point?' In Casino, Robert led the star-studded cast as mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, who was tasked with running a Las Vegas casino. He was forced to take action when best friend Nicky Santoro's (Joe Pesci) criminal activities – as well as his own romance with con artist Ginger (Sharon Stone) – drew too much attention to their antics. The movie served as a reunion for Martin, Robert and Joe, who worked together on 1990 film Goodfellas, also adapted from a nonfiction book by Nick. Discussing the note that Casino was 'adapted from a true story', the director conceded: 'We did have to do a great deal of changing names. It's in the movie, we can't even say Chicago. 'When it cuts back to Chicago, we put 'back home'.' When asked about whether there was 'pushback' from the mob community, he added: 'No… There were meetings in Vegas with a number of people who told [us] to be careful and remember that these [characters were] based on real people, etc. More Trending 'The point is that the material … is public knowledge and it is apparently factual. We changed the names, we changed so many things. But naturally, those who know the characters it's based upon, they know the truth. These are elements of truth. The award-winning firm Collective Architecture has been appointed to develop plans to save the A-listed building by the charity responsible for safeguarding Ellisland Farm and Museum near Dumfries. Built in 1788, the farmstead is recognised as a site of exceptional historic and cultural importance as it is where Burns wrote a third of his creative output, including famous works such as Auld Lang Syne and Tam o' Shanter. Earlier plans for a new-built visitor centre on the site have been scaled back to focus solely on adapting and conserving the historic buildings, which several reports have assessed as being 'at-risk'. READ MORE: Scotland's first ever children's hospice announces major £17 million revamp Led by Emma Fairhurst and Gerry Hogan of Collective Architecture, the team will develop proposals to reverse historic damage to the 18th-century buildings, provide a safe home for the museum collection, and adapt certain structures to serve as event and education spaces. Fairhurst welcomed the announcement, stating that Collective Architecture aims to ensure the legacy of the building is preserved. She said: 'It is a privilege to be appointed to lead the design team for Ellisland Farm, a site of deep historical and cultural value. 'We look forward to working closely with The Robert Burns Ellisland Trust to restore and enhance this remarkable place, ensuring its legacy is preserved and celebrated for generations to come.' The cottage that Burns built for his wife, Jean Armour, will also be restored as closely as possible to its original 1788 condition. Modern alterations will be removed to create an 'immersive historical experience' for visitors while a visitor accommodation will also be included in the plans to revamp the farm aiming to give people the chance to host creative retreats and workshops so that future generations of artists can also 'see nature through the poet's eyes'. The design work is part of the Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne project, which is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, South of Scotland Enterprise, Museums Galleries Scotland, and The Holywood Trust. Joan McAlpine, project director of Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne, said: 'The Trust was impressed by Collective's collaborative approach and their outstanding track record in conservation-led adaptive reuse. 'We particularly admired their work on other A-listed sites such as the restoration of the Calton Hill Observatory in Edinburgh and the James Watt Institute in Greenock. 'Both projects involved the sensitive adaptation of heritage buildings housing important collections. 'Now that we are focused on delivering our vision using the A-listed farm buildings, Collective's expertise made them our first choice.' Peebles-based Abound will develop an interpretation plan for the site, while Rob Robinson Heritage will produce a revised business plan. In addition, Peter Thierfeldt, whose previous experience includes The Willow Tea Rooms, The Citizens Theatre, and Pitlochry Festival Theatre, has been appointed Director of Development to lead a major international fundraising campaign. The development stage of Saving the Home of Auld Lang Syne is projected to cost more than £900,000 and could unlock more than £1.2 million from the Heritage Fund to help deliver the completed project.
