Australia: Man arrested for racist abuse of basketball star – DW – 07/11/2025

DW11-07-2025
The arrest for alleged racial abuse via social media of a basketball player is the first of its kind in Australia.
Police in Australia said Friday that a man has been arrested and charged for racially abusing a professional National Basketball League (NBL) player online.
In a statement, police in the state of Victoria said detectives had "arrested and charged a 37-year-old Huntingdale man who allegedly sent racist messages to the player's personal social media account."
The man has been charged with using "a carriage service" — meaning a phone, email or social media — "to menace, harass and/or offend," police said. He has been released on bail and is due to appear at a Melbourne court on August 15.
The messages in question were sent after a match at Melbourne's John Cain Arena between Melbourne United and the Adelaide 36ers on November 17, 2024, which saw fans thrown out following clashes with players from Adelaide.
"The man charged is not connected to any fans ejected during this game," police said.
Although neither police nor the club have identified the player in question, Australian media have widely reported the alleged victim as former National Basketball Association (NBA) star, American Montrezl Harrell.
The 31-year-old was drafted in 2015 by the Houston Rockets, and made his name with the Los Angeles Clippers.
He also played for the Los Angeles Lakers, the Washington Wizards, the Charlotte Hornets and the Philadelphia 76ers before joining Adelaide for the 2024-2025 season.
In a statement, Basketball Australia (BA) said the arrest was made after it had "collaborated with Victoria Police to secure the first-ever successful arrest of a person in Australian basketball on charges of racially abusing an athlete via social media," calling the arrest "a landmark moment."
"Every athlete deserves to compete in a safe environment, free from abuse. There are laws in place to govern appropriate behaviour towards athletes, and it's important the public understands that," BA said.
It added that "taking a stand" against hateful messages "sends a clear message of zero tolerance and helps drive the cultural change needed to create a safe sport and respectful environment for everyone."
The Adelaide 36ers said it would not comment on the incident as it was now a criminal matter.
But the club did say the player who had allegedly received the racist messages "is aware of the arrest and is comfortable with the way the matter has been handled."
The club also praised Victoria Police and Basketball Australia's Integrity Unit "for their strong stance in pursuing this matter."
"The club will continue to call out racism and remains committed to ensuring it provides and is part of an inclusive, welcoming and safe environment for players, staff and fans," the team concluded.

Russia Using American Trucks to Launch Deadly Kamikaze Drone Strikes on Ukraine Cities: Report

Russia is reportedly equipping American-made trucks to launch deadly kamikaze drone strikes on Ukrainian cities, according to a new report. A modified Ram 1500 pickup truck could be seen in a July 20 video by Zvezda, a state TV channel controlled by the country's defense ministry, firing kamikaze drones, according to the Kyiv Independent . Four more trucks with the same feature were later seen in the video showing off the Tatarstan region drone factory, although a source told the outlet that launching drones from pickup trucks was not common. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Stellantis, who owns Ram Trucks, paused all exports to Russia after sanctions were implemented on the country. However, between February 2022 and September 2024, 130 Michigan-made Ram 1500 trucks ended up in the country. The majority of these exports are believed to have come about through a tactic called "transshipment," which is when a company direct sales through a country that is not participating in the sanctions. Several companies based in the United Arab Emirates, who was not involved in the sanctions on Russia, allegedly rerouted sales of the American trucks through the country to sell to private Russian companies. From there, the trucks could be sold anywhere in Russia. While companies could be able to continue sales in sanction-restricted countries with a special license, Alex Bashinsky, a co-founder at the Global Sanctions Training Institute and member of the International Working Group on Russian Sanctions, told the outlet that they are "hard to obtain." No companies reached out to by Kyiv Independent explicitly stated they had the required license. An intel report from earlier this month revealed that Russia's kamikaze drones are set to multiply in number to use in its war against Ukraine, with the number Shahed-136s, the most common explosive-carrying drone used by Russia, reportedly up exponentially. On Thursday, at least 33 people were injured in an attack on Kharkiv, Ukraine, which officials from the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office said may have involved a new weapon developed by Russia, UMPB-5 bombs, though this remains unconfirmed. Trump Trip To Scotland Combines Diplomacy And Golf

US President Donald Trump travels to Scotland on Friday for a mix of diplomacy, business and leisure, as he stays at family-owned golf resorts. The president is expected to split his time between two seaside golf courses bearing his name, Turnberry and Aberdeen. Trump is due to arrive in Scotland Friday at 8:20 pm local time (1920 GMT) and has no public events scheduled for Saturday or Sunday, the White House said. An avid golfer, Trump is expected to tear himself away from the greens to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at some point, but details of that meeting have not been released. Starmer is not reputed to be as passionate about golf as the 79-year-old Republican, and may have other concerns to tee off on. The US and the UK announced a trade agreement in May, but London is worried about Trump's stated intention to "refine" the deal. The British leader, who has dodged the exorbitant tariffs other countries have been saddled with, will aim to stay in the good graces of the unpredictable American leader. Trump is also expected to return to the UK in September for a state visit -- his second -- at the invitation of King Charles III, which promises to be lavish. The trip to Scotland puts physical distance between Trump and the latest twists in the case of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the wealthy financier accused of sex trafficking who died in prison in 2019 before facing trial. In his heyday, Epstein was friends with Trump and others in the New York jet-set, but the president is now facing backlash from his own MAGA supporters who demand access to the Epstein case files. Many support a conspiracy theory under which "deep state" elites protected rich and famous people who took part in an Epstein sex ring. But Trump is urging his supporters to move on and drop the case. The Wall Street Journal, which published an article detailing longstanding links between Trump and the sex offender, is being punished by the White House. Its reporting staff plans to travel to Scotland on its own and join the White House press pool. But it has now been denied a seat on Air Force One for the flight back home. During a previous visit in 2023, Trump said he felt at home in Scotland, where his mother Mary Anne MacLeod grew up before emigrating to the United States at age 18. The affection is not necessarily mutual in Scotland, where protests are planned Saturday in Edinburgh and Aberdeen to oppose his visit. A significant police presence will be deployed. Residents, environmentalists and elected officials have also voiced discontent over the Trump family's construction of a golf course in Balmedie, a village in Aberdeenshire. While Trump's family has undertaken many development projects worldwide, the president no longer legally controls the family holdings. But opponents and watchdog groups have accused him of many conflicts of interest and using his position as US president to promote private family investments, especially abroad. The American NGO Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said in May that 21 development projects were already underway abroad during Trump's second term. The group also noted that the Trump Organization revised its own ethical charter in January to remove any prohibition from launching new international ventures with private actors, departing from the moratorium it had imposed during Trump's first term.
