92 psychiatric inmate patients fell ill at IMH Erragadda: Telangana Health Minister
A day after the alleged food poisoning incident came to light, Health Minister visited the hospital on Wednesday.
He said that out of the 92 patients, 18 were shifted to Osmania General Hospital (OGH) for treatment, while the remaining 74 are being treated by six teams of doctors, including those from Gandhi Hospital and OGH, at Erragadda hospital.
The minister mentioned that diet or water contamination could be the reason behind the incident and announced that the diet contractor had been terminated. He instructed the Director of Medical Health to investigate the matter.
Officials suspect that diet or water contamination might have caused the patients' ill health, with a possibility that the additional sweets served on State Formation Day could be the cause.
Meanwhile, an inmate named Karan (30) died on June 3. The minister added that a police complaint had been lodged and an investigation was underway. The post-mortem has been conducted, and the exact cause of death will be revealed once the reports are received.

Bhopal Doctor Conned Out Of Rs 10 Lakh On Pretext Of Getting Entry In Bigg Boss, Files FIR
Mumbai: Dr Abhineet Gupta from Bhopal was conned out of Rs 10 lakh on the pretext of getting entry in the popular television reality show "Bigg Boss". The dermatologist has filed an FIR at the Oshiwara Police Station in Mumbai. Previously, an FIR was filed by Abhineet in Bhopal. During a recent press conference in Mumbai, the doctor revealed that back in 2022, a man named Karan Singh urged Abhineet to try for "Bigg Boss". He claimed to have a good identity with the makers. "He talked about giving one crore rupees, but I said that I do not have that much money. Then he went to Mumbai, and he made me talk to his colleagues on the phone. He talked about giving 60 lakh rupees and told me to pay in cash. He called me to Mumbai and arranged a meeting with Harish Shah, Senior Vice President of Endemol Company." Next, Karan asked Abhineet for money, and he transferred 10 lakh rupees to the accused. However, when the list of contestants of "Bigg Boss season 16" was announced, Abhineet's name was not in it. When he questioned Karan about this, he said that Abhineet would enter mid-show as a wild card. But after the season ended, Karan changed his statement, saying that he would make him participate in the next season. However, this time as well, nothing happened. "When season 17 also ended, I asked Karan Singh to return the 10 lakh rupees. But he kept making me run around. Finally, I went to the police to lodge a complaint, but there too it was delayed a lot, and after almost two years, the FIR was registered with great difficulty," Abhineet said. The police have registered a case against the accused under section 420 of the IPC for fraud. Abhineet stated that he wants everyone to be aware of people like Karan so that they do not end up getting scammed like him.

When the heart finds its address again
CHENNAI: It was a fine morning in February 2024 when a quiet moment at the Government Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Kilpauk was interrupted by the arrival of a photograph – of 44-year-old Johan (name changed) smiling beside his mother, thousands of miles away in Rwanda. For the IMH team, this was more than just an image. It was a picture of hope and the culmination of a long journey – the kind that unfolds behind the scenes at one of Asia's oldest and largest mental health hospitals, established in 1795, where the mandate extends far beyond treatment and into the realm of family and belonging. Johan's arrival in Chennai from Rwanda was anything but ordinary. Once a student at Annamalai University, the Rwandan's life took a dramatic turn in 2014 when he dropped out of college and found himself stranded after his roommates moved out. Adding to his challenges was a missing passport, an expired visa, and, what followed for Johan, a descent into anonymity – years spent wandering the streets, off the grid, until the police found him and placed him at Anbu Jothi Ashram. After its closure, he was sent to IMH – an institute that strives to reunite lost individuals with their families. Johan's case put the IMH team's skills and patience to the test. He was, quite literally, stuck in the country as he had lost his travel documents. K Mohan, a psychiatric social worker at IMH, recalls the turbulent times vividly. 'The process began with notifying the Rwandan embassy. Later, we contacted the Foreigners Registration Regional Officer (FRRO) in Nungambakkam to secure an exit permit. They charged us a heavy penalty of Rs 80,000 for overstaying, which was waived after an intervention from the IMH director,' he says.
