Judge to decide if Clearwater businessman faces criminal contempt in $100M trust fund case
The Brief A federal judge in Tampa will decide Thursday whether to refer Clearwater businessman Leo Govoni for criminal contempt. Govoni is accused of taking more than $100 million from special needs trust funds. Families relying on the trust money are still trying to recover their losses. TAMPA, Fla. - A high-stakes hearing is set for Thursday morning inside Tampa's federal courthouse – one that could escalate a long-running trust fund scandal into criminal proceedings. The backstory Leo Govoni, a Clearwater businessman, is accused in federal court of taking more than $100 million from medical trust funds managed by the Center for Special Needs Trust Administration, which he founded. The money was intended to cover medical and living expenses for people with disabilities and serious injuries. The trust center filed for bankruptcy in February 2024 after records showed the money was loaned to Govoni's private company, Boston Finance Group, but never repaid. Bankruptcy estate attorneys say Govoni has failed to fully disclose what happened to the funds, including proceeds from roughly $5 million in real estate sales. PREVIOUS: Over 100 businesses seized from Pinellas businessman accused of taking $100M from special needs trusts U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Roberta Colton previously found Govoni in civil contempt in April for failing to turn over financial records. At Thursday's hearing, she could decide whether to refer the case to federal district court for criminal contempt, which could lead to charges and prison time. Court records show Govoni spent lavishly, using trust fund money on a $3.4 million private jet, trips to the Kentucky Derby, large political contributions, and real estate investments. The FBI, IRS, and SEC are also investigating. RELATED: Lawsuit filed against Pinellas County businessman Leo Govoni, Big Storm Brewing's 'Fat Point Brewing' brand Why you should care Many families who relied on the trust funds have been left without critical financial support. Megan Murray, an attorney representing impacted families, told FOX 13 News last month: "It feels like a complete disregard for the victims and welfare and what they've been through over the last decade or so. The victims deserve better, and it was unfortunate to hear some of the things that were testified to because the victims are really at a loss. A lot of them are fully compromised. They don't have alternative resources." Underage drinking party may have preceded Bedford teen's death, chief says
The 17-year-old Bedford High School junior who died in a motor vehicle incident Sunday had been at a party where there may have been underage drinking, police said. The teenage boy, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after police and emergency responders went to Wallace Road around 8:15 p.m. following a report of a person jumping out of a car near Stagecoach Lane. The circumstances that led to the boy's death are still unclear though, Bedford Police Chief Daniel Douidi said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. 'A preliminary investigation indicates that the student, a 17-year-old male, exited a moving vehicle under unclear circumstances while traveling on Wallace Road,' Douidi said. 'The incident appears to have followed a social gathering that may have involved underage drinking. We are and have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the gathering, including any potential violations of the law.' The name of the driver of the car involved in the incident has not been released. Douidi said it was with 'great sadness' that he confirmed the incident that led to the death of the local teenager, the third teen killed in a Bedford motor vehicle incident over a 49-day stretch. Lauren Souza, a 16-year-old Trinity High School junior from Bedford, was killed in a crash early Easter morning on April 20. On May 28, a Manchester 13-year-old died in a crash at the Kilton Road exit off Route 101. 'The Bedford Police Department is working closely with the School District and community leaders to support students and staff during this difficult time,' Douidi said. Bedford High Principal Bob Jozokos sent a letter to parents first thing Monday informing them that a student had died and that resources were available for students at the school. The investigation is ongoing. Police have not said if any arrests have been made or are imminent. 'Our hearts are with the family, friends, and entire school community mourning this tragic loss. We urge everyone, especially parents, to understand the life-threatening risks associated with underage drinking and gatherings that are not properly supervised. No parent should have to face the loss of a child under these circumstances,' Douidi said. Anyone who may have seen anything on Wallace Road leading up to the incident can call the Bedford Police Department at 603-472-5113. dpierce@

Deadly crash leaves Garland County deputy hospitalized
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – A deadly crash Sunday left a Garland County Sheriff's Office deputy hospitalized and another man dead. Conditions were foggy before sunrise around 4:40 a.m. According to an Arkansas State Police crash report, 22-year-old Lane Murphy of Plumerville was heading north when he crossed the center line and struck 22-year-old Deputy Gavan Mason's patrol vehicle. Garland County deputy injured in fatal Sunday morning crash Mason's vehicle overturned after a collision, but Murphy went off the road and died at the scene. GCSO Public Information Officer Captain Joel Ware said Mason was rushed to CHI St. Vincent Hospital with internal injuries and a broken arm, which required surgery. 'Those affected by it, our hearts go out to him,' Ware said. 'For the damage to be as severe as it was pretty scary. Very fortunate that Deputy Mason is still here with us.' It is estimated that it will take 12 weeks before Deputy Mason can return to work. He was already on track to be moved out of the patrol car and into an investigator position. GCSO Chief Deputy Steven Elrod said Mason has that 'X factor.' 'He is a team player. He has great camaraderie. He is versatile in so many different areas. Wherever you need him, he's able to respond,' Elrod stated. Arkansas State Police trooper injured in Easter Sunday crash in Garland County Although Mason can't respond right now, the community and coworkers have to help the 22-year-old deputy with his medical and financial needs. Elrod said in the last year, the new stretch of Highway 5 where the crash happened has had 17 accidents. Garland County is collecting data to ask the Arkansas Department of Transportation what can be done to make the area safer. 'Deputy Mason certainly wasn't the first person to be injured out in that stretch. We want him to be the last if we can,' Elrod said. Arkansas Capitol police officer injured in hit-and-run crash Those willing to assist with Deputy Mason's recovery can make donations to any First Security Bank in his name.
