Bournemouth Sports secure survival and continue fine form with Maidenhead win

Yahoo31-03-2025

BOURNEMOUTH Sports confirmed their National League Division One South West status for another season with a 1-0 win over Maidenhead United.
With their three points, and results elsewhere, Sports moved up to ninth in the league, Portishead Town in the relegation zone now unable to catch them with two games to play in the season.
The win continued an excellent run of form from Sports that has dragged them clear of the relegation battle, winning three and drawing two of their past five league fixtures and completing an unbeaten March.
It was a steady start to the game at New Milton, as both sides felt their way into the game, with a couple of half-chances for the hosts, Hollie Shaw volleying wide from the edge of the box after 16 minutes.
Katie Kingshott had her first effort on goal three minutes later, but it was well covered by the Maidenhead keeper.
On the half an hour mark, Kingshott had a go from 40 yards and saw her effort go just past the top left corner, as neither side was able to break the deadlock in the first half.
Emily Phillips shot wide four minutes into the second half, before Jasmine Hughes headed a corner over the bar.
Maidenhead struck the crossbar from a free kick after 63 minutes, Sports able to clear, before Kelly-Marie Fripp saw a Sports free kick caught by the keeper.
Shaw fired over the bar before Kingshott had a shot blocked as Sports sought to pile on the pressure, and that pressure got its rewards with ten minutes left of the 90.
It was lovely build up play involving Millia Lewis and Hughes, the latter playing in Rosie Eden, who cut the ball back for Shaw to finish to give Sports the lead.
Maidenhead sought an equaliser but Sports held firm to win and confirm their survival in the league.

Yankees hopeful Stanton rejoins team soon after impressive rehab showing

Yankees hopeful Stanton rejoins team soon after impressive rehab showing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Giancarlo Stanton did not look rusty Tuesday night in his first in-game at-bats since October. In his latest rehab game with Double-A Somerset, Stanton went 2-for-3, driving in three runs over seven innings, showing off the power and clutch hitting that New York desperately hopes to see back in their lineup soon. Advertisement Stanton, sidelined all season with recurring bilateral elbow epicondylitis, has been progressing steadily after being moved from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list earlier this season. This strong rehab outing provides optimism that his troublesome elbows are responding positively and could allow for a return to the Yankees lineup in the near future. Since joining the Yankees in a blockbuster deal in December 2017, Stanton's tenure has been defined by potent power and persistent injuries. Though he exploded onto the scene in 2018 with 38 home runs and 100 RBIs, subsequent seasons have seen him plagued by various muscular and elbow issues. His durability concerns have limited him to just over half the possible games since 2019, creating frustration around his intermittent availability. Advertisement Yet, when healthy, Stanton remains a decisive factor. He earned MVP honors in the 2022 All-Star Game and again in the 2024 ALCS, propelling the Yankees to their first World Series appearance in 15 years. His combination of power and clutch performance under pressure underscores why his return is so eagerly anticipated. With his recent performance at Somerset, the Yankees have to be encouraged. He is scheduled to DH again on Wednesday night for Somerset. Before the Yankees' Tuesday night game against the Royals, manager Aaron Boone said that they had not ruled out Stanton rejoining the Yankees' lineup this weekend in Fenway against the Boston Red Sox. Aliyah Boston Makes WNBA History Without Caitlin Clark

Aliyah Boston Makes WNBA History Without Caitlin Clark originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Aliyah Boston and the Indiana Fever aimed to get back above .500 early in the 2025 WNBA season, doing so without All-WNBA guard Caitlin Clark. Advertisement On Tuesday, the Fever (4-4) traveled to Atlanta for the second time this year, facing Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream (5-3). Entering the game, Boston had recorded 245 assists over her three-year career with Indiana. With 9:09 remaining in the third quarter, the former South Carolina center found Kelsey Mitchell for a 17-foot pull-up jumper, marking her fifth assist of the night and the 250th of her career. In doing so, Boston has become the second-fastest center in WNBA history to reach 250+ assists per Polymarket Sports, achieving this feat in 89 career games. To put this into perspective, Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who averages 8.0 assists per game this year, didn't reach 250 assists until her 95th game. Clark holds the overall record for fastest to reach 250 assists, doing so in 31 games into her rookie season. Advertisement Boston made the WNBA All-Star team in each of her first two seasons with the Fever. Through their first eight games this year, she is averaging 15.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston (7)Brett Davis-Imagn Images While Boston has found some success over the past four games, she has yet to score more than 20 points without Clark. With her All-WNBA point guard in the lineup, Boston has reached 20 or more points in two of four games. Clark suffered a quad strain in a May 24 loss to the New York Liberty, leaving her out for the previous five games. However, she could return for the Fever's next matchup, facing the Liberty once again on Saturday.
