Mario Lemieux-led group eyeing Penguins purchase, reports say they are 'very interested'

Mario Lemieux, a name etched deeply into Pittsburgh Penguins history, could be preparing for a stunning return—this time off the ice. According to The Athletic, Lemieux is reportedly 'very interested' in buying back the Penguins alongside former co-owner Ron Burkle and ex-CEO Dave Morehouse, now serving as an advisor with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pittsburgh Penguins could be back in the hands of Mario Lemieux in a dramatic ownership move
This potential move follows Fenway Sports Group's (FSG) 2021 acquisition of the franchise in a $900 million deal. While FSG has maintained that it's only exploring a 'minority investment,' Lemieux's group is said to be actively evaluating financial options to regain control. 'We've seen the speculation, and as we've previously shared with media, Fenway Sports Group is currently engaged in a process to explore a potential minority investment in the Pittsburgh Penguins,' FSG said in a statement.
However, many see this as an opening Lemieux could eventually capitalize on.
The timing couldn't be more fitting. Since the franchise changed hands, the Penguins have struggled. Pittsburgh failed to reach the playoffs in the last two seasons after a 15-year streak, and ticket sales have dropped to just 91.4% of capacity, an all-time low in the Sidney Crosby era. With fan enthusiasm fading and on-ice performance waning, a return to Lemieux-led ownership could breathe new life into the franchise.

Lemieux's legacy isn't just about goals and assists—it's about saving hockey in Pittsburgh. From leading the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in 1991 and 1992, to stepping in with controlling interest when the franchise was bankrupt, Lemieux has twice resurrected the Penguins. He even returned to play in 2000, taking the team on an unexpected journey to the Eastern Conference Final while also serving as owner.
With valuations of NHL franchises soaring—Forbes now pegs the Penguins at $1.75 billion—buying back the team won't come cheap. But Lemieux's group is reportedly hoping FSG will entertain a 'reasonable' deal, especially given the team's recent struggles and potential for league-wide revenue boosts from future expansion.
Lemieux, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 before his comeback, last suited up during Crosby's rookie season. He later watched Crosby lead the team to a Stanley Cup in 2009, under Lemieux's ownership.
If this comeback materializes, it won't just be about business. For Lemieux, it's about passion, legacy, and rescuing the Penguins once more when they need it most.

Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik slams govt for scrapping metro project

Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has lashed out at the BJP-led state government for scrapping the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project . Patnaik, in a strongly worded post on X, called it a betrayal of the city's future. "The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project would have reshaped how the city moves. Now, the double-engine government has pushed it 10 years back," Patnaik wrote. The first phase of the Rs 6,255 crore project, from the airport to Trisulia, was greenlit during Patnaik's tenure and scheduled to complete by December 2027. But the project was shelved recently, with DMRC issuing termination notices to contractors. The BJP government defended the move, saying the earlier route wasn't viable and that a more expansive Puri-Bhubaneswar-Cuttack corridor is being planned. "We are preparing a new DPR and forming a committee to study similar metros. The revised plan will connect all major cities," said Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra . India face Pakistan in Dubai as ACC announces 2025 Asia Cup venues

India will face Pakistan in Dubai on September 14 in the 2025 Asia Cup, with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announcing the venues for the tournament on Saturday. While the schedule had been announced earler, the venues were yet to be revealed and were unveiled only on August 2. 'The tournament will be played across two world class venues of Dubai, which will host 11 matches, and Abu Dhabi, which will host eight matches, bringing a total of 19 T20 internationals to fans across the region,' the ACC said in its statement. Apart from India and Pakistan, the other participants in the tournament are Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, UAE and Oman. India are designated hosts, although the tournament will be played in the venues in UAE. India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are slotted in Group A while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are in Group B. The teams last met in an ODI during the Champions Trophy at the same venue, with India beating Pakistan by six wickets on the back of Virat Kohli's century. Their last T20 meeting came during the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York with a Rohit Sharma-led Indian side edging their rivals by six runs. With only seven months left until the next T20 World Cup iteration to be played in India and Sri Lanka, the continental tournament will return to the T20 format. The previous edition of the Asia Cup was played in the ODI format on the road to the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where India demolished hosts Sri Lanka to lift the title. The possibility of at least one match up between India and Pakistan at the Asia Cup has been a matter of some controversy. The ACC has stated in its statement that there is potential for more games between the two teams after the group stage with their set to be a Super Four stage and then a final. Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary is among those who questioned how India are playing Pakistan in the tournament after the Pahalgam terror attack in April. 'The situation was so bad, how can we think of an India-Pakistan match? I feel that it should be considered again and the India-Pakistan match should not happen in such an environment,' Tiwary said, speaking on ANI. The two sides were slated to meet in the Women's Asia Cup for emerging players last month. However, the BCCI withdrew from the tournament in the aftermath of the terror attacks and the consequent escalation in hostilities.

Competitive windows: Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars set the pace as goaltending remains a problem for others

NHL contender futures will be based on the shoulders of which teams have the strongest competitive windows. The Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, and Carolina Hurricanes are the most intriguing teams heading into the next season, but each has significant unknowns on the issues of age, contracts, and depth on their roster. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While Florida seems settled in terms of recent re-signings and veteran composition, Vegas and Chicago are suspect in goal. Buffalo, Seattle, and Minnesota, however, have to settle more underlying roster issues before they can really compete. Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, and Carolina Hurricanes poised for long-term contention In the Eastern Conference, the Florida Panthers remain firmly in their window of competitiveness after re-signing key assets such as Sam Bennett and Noah Ekholm, with the signing of an extension for Marshawn. Their back-to-back Stanley Cup championships underscore a team that retains the "team to beat" label, though caution flags are tied to veteran goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who is 37 and may not have the depth to fall back on if he regresses. In the Western Conference, the Dallas Stars appear just as poised. With young players like Wyatt Johnston under contract for the long haul, key re-signings of prospects like Ruppe Hinn, and extensions for Matt Duchene, Miro Heiskanen, and Chris Tanev, Dallas has constructed a foundation that will remain competitive for years to come. Goaltending is the wild card for many contenders Though roster formations are sound upfront and defensively, the Vegas Golden Knights and Chicago Blackhawks expose glaring goaltending issues. Even after signing Mitch Marner in a coup, Vegas still has no goaltending comfort behind starter Aidan Hill. Backup Akira Schmid saw solid playoff minutes in limited duty—with a .924 save percentage in 10 games—but depth is shallow after refusing to re-sign Ilya Samsonov. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Other NHL teams need more certainty In Buffalo, the defense appears designed to support a playoff push, with Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, Bowen Byram, and newly acquired Connor Timmons making waves—the forward group is desperately short of talent at the top. Matias Samuelsson continues to be underwhelming on a large contract, with rumors involving possible buyouts or trades. The Seattle Kraken remain in question with Mason Marchment and Ryan Lindgren added to the mix. The organization still has plenty of contracts that are expiring, and general manager Jason Botterill can turn to selling if the team isn't on pace by the holidays. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild embark on a make-or-break offseason with over $10 million of cap space tied up in the pending deals of Marco Rossi and Kirill Kaprizov. Their only major addition—Vladimir Tarasenko—is as much a salary dump as a competing addition. Whether Minnesota signs Kaprizov to an extension or retains Rossi or not might just be the difference between their window being open or closed. Also read: In front of 2025–26, there are three pretenders—Florida, Dallas, and Carolina—each with their respective stability and risk factors. Depth-light teams like Vegas and Chicago are relying on unstable goaltending. Buffalo, Seattle, and Minnesota still must set their paths. Success this year finally comes down to balancing star trades, goaltender stability, and creating chemistry.
