China's Xi, Germany's Merz stress ties to weather trade turmoil
BEIJING/BERLIN - Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a call on Friday highlighted the importance of their countries' relationship as both China and Europe are trying to tackle uncertainty caused by U.S. tariff policies.
Europe and China are among the biggest trading partners of the U.S. and have deep trading ties with each other. Chinese-German trade volume alone accounted for around 246 billion euros ($279 billion) last year, according to official figures.
Germany has in recent years sought a difficult balance in relations with China, seen by Berlin as both a strategic rival and a vital trading partner whose giant market has buoyed Germany's large export-driven economy.
In the call, Xi noted changes in the world unseen in a century, with "intertwined turmoil and transformation," official broadcaster CCTV reported.
"China is willing to work with Germany to open a new chapter in their all-round strategic partnership, to lead China-EU relations toward new development, and to contribute to the stable growth of the global economy," Xi was quoted as saying.
Merz's spokesperson said both leaders emphasized their willingness to cooperate to overcome global challenges.
"Chancellor Merz emphasized the importance of fair competition and reciprocity," he added.
Neither Berlin nor the CCTV report explicitly mentioned U.S. tariffs.
Beijing earlier this month urged Germany not to undermine cooperation in the name of de-risking, a strategy by Europe to reduce its dependence on China trade.
The European Union, of which Germany is the biggest economic power, and China are also at odds over Chinese electric vehicles. REUTERS

PARIS :Alphabet unit Google said on Tuesday it will make it easier for app developers to steer customers to channels other than Google after the European Union competition watchdog charged it with breaching EU regulations. In March, Google was hit with two charges of breaching the EU's landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to rein in the power of Big Tech. Google has been in the European Commission's crosshairs since early 2024 over whether it restricts app developers from informing users about offers outside its app store Google Play and whether it favours its vertical search services such as Google Flights. Regulators have said Alphabet technically prevents app developers from freely steering consumers to other channels for better offers. They said a service fee charged by the company for facilitating the initial acquisition of a new customer by an app developer via Google Play goes beyond what is justified. In a blog post, Google said that following discussions with the European Commission, developers, and other experts, Google is updating certain terms. "While we still have concerns that these changes could expose Android users to harmful content and make the app experience worse, we're updating our External Offers Program for the EU with revised fees and more options for Android developers, following DMA discussions with the European Commission," EMEA Senior Competition Counsel Clare Kelly said. The company, which has been fined more than 8 billion euros ($9.3 billion) by the EU for various antitrust violations, risks fines of up to 10 per cent of its global annual sales if found guilty of breaching the DMA. KYIV - When Ukrainian designer Viktor Anisimov showed Volodymyr Zelensky a new black suit on Aug 15, it included a small detail. A back vent on the back inched it closer to a civilian suit, compared to the military outfits the president has favoured throughout the war in Ukraine. 'These are our hopes for peace,' Mr Anisimov told Reuters about the tweak. 'We think that if we add something subtle to this image, something from civilian clothing to his uniform, then it will be like a lucky charm.' On Aug 18, the lucky charm worked to set a warm tone for a White House meeting with US President Donald Trump. Moments after Mr Zelensky arrived, Mr Trump complimented him on the suit. Mr Zelensky's dark military-style outfit was one of the things Mr Trump objected to during a disastrous Oval Office meeting in February, when the Ukrainian leader was given a public scolding. Mr Anisimov, 61, from the northern region of Chernihiv, said he was watching videos of that interaction and felt the jabs. He perceived them as aimed at the Ukrainian citizens, not just at Mr Zelensky. 'There was a slight sense of despair because they do not understand how we breathe, how we live,' he said. In the early 2000s, then-comedian Mr Zelensky and his team 'Kvartal 95' sought to establish their identities on the Ukrainian screens after getting their initial break in comedy competitions. The process was gradual: black T-shirts gave way to white shirts with ties and then morphed into suits worn by the team during the shows. Mr Anisimov said he had not heard from Mr Zelensky for over five years when a mutual acquaintance from the previous make-over contacted him in January. They floated the idea of creating a capsule collection for the president. Mr Anisimov said he used the military uniform as an inspiration point to ensure versatility for all items in the capsule. 'I can't say that we sewed (a suit) specifically for the Nato summit or for an important conversation with Trump and European leaders. The suit is just a suit,' Mr Anisimov said, adding that Mr Zelensky has about five similar-looking jackets with small tweaks. What is B30A? Nvidia Prepares New, More Powerful Blackwell-Based AI Chip for China
US-based semiconductor giant Nvidia is developing a new artificial intelligence chip for the Chinese market, sources familiar with the matter revealed. The processor, known internally as the B30A, will be based on Nvidia's latest Blackwell architecture and is expected to be more powerful than the H20 chip currently approved for sale in China. Nvidia X The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump signaled last week that Washington may allow more advanced chips to be exported to China. However, approval remains uncertain as U.S. lawmakers continue to express concerns about providing Beijing with access to high-performance AI technology. The B30A will reportedly use a single-die design, offering roughly half the computing power of Nvidia's flagship B300, which uses a dual-die configuration. Despite the scaled-down performance, the chip will feature high-bandwidth memory and Nvidia's NVLink interconnect, similar to the H20 but built on newer technology. Although the final specifications are not yet confirmed, Nvidia aims to deliver samples of the chip to Chinese clients for testing as early as next month. In a statement, the company said it regularly evaluates new products to remain competitive "to the extent governments allow," emphasizing that all offerings comply fully with regulatory approvals. China accounted for about 13% of Nvidia's revenue last year, making it a critical market despite heavy restrictions. In July, the U.S. allowed Nvidia to resume sales of the H20, which had been halted earlier this year. Trump later suggested that future Nvidia chips for China could come with "30% to 50% off" in computing power compared to flagship models, calling the H20 "obsolete." The question of how much AI hardware China should access remains one of the most sensitive issues in U.S.-China trade relations. Nvidia has argued that continued engagement with Chinese firms is necessary to prevent them from switching entirely to local rivals like Huawei, which is rapidly improving its chip capabilities. Chinese state media have recently raised security concerns about Nvidia's chips, warning local companies about potential risks. Nvidia has denied those claims, saying its hardware contains no hidden vulnerabilities. Alongside the B30A, Nvidia is also preparing another China-specific chip, the RTX6000D, designed mainly for AI inference tasks. This processor, also based on Blackwell architecture, will have reduced specifications to comply with U.S. export thresholds. Small batches are expected to reach Chinese clients by September.
