National Guard troops fully deployed in Washington for Trump-ordered security mission, says Pentagon

Malay Maila day ago
WASHINGTON, Aug 15 — All 800 National Guard troops who were ordered to the US capital Washington to aid law enforcement personnel by President Donald Trump have now been mobilised, the Pentagon said Thursday.
Trump ordered the deployment — which follows a similar move during protests in Los Angeles in June — as part of what he billed as a crackdown on crime in Washington, where violent offences are in fact down.
'As of today, all 800 Army and Air National Guardsmen are mobilised... as part of Joint Task Force DC, and they are now here in our capital,' Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson told journalists.
They 'will assist the DC Metropolitan Police Department and federal law enforcement partners with monument security, community safety patrols, protecting federal facilities and officers' and traffic control posts, Wilson said.
The troops 'will remain until law and order has been restored in the District, as determined by the president,' she added.
The US Army later said the National Guard's initial mission 'is to provide a visible presence in key public areas, serving as a visible crime deterrent.'
'They will not arrest, search, or direct law enforcement,' but they 'have the authority to temporarily detain individuals to prevent imminent harm,' the Army said in a statement.
The troops will be equipped with protective gear, it added, saying that weapons would be available if needed but would remain in the armory.
Trump announced the National Guard deployment — along with a federal takeover of the city's police department — on Monday, vowing 'to take our capital back.'
The overwhelmingly Democratic US capital faces allegations from Republican politicians that it is overrun by crime, plagued by homelessness and financially mismanaged.
However, data from Washington police shows significant drops in violent crime between 2023 and 2024, although that was coming off the back of a post-pandemic surge.
The deployment of troops in Washington comes after Trump dispatched the National Guard and Marines to quell unrest in Los Angeles, California, that was spurred by immigration enforcement raids.
It was the first time since 1965 that a US president deployed the National Guard against the wishes of a state governor.
Most National Guard forces answer to state governors and have to be 'federalized' to be brought under presidential control, but in Washington these troops already report only to the US president. — AFP

Trump says semiconductor tariffs coming soon, could reach 300pc to force tech firms back to US

WASHINGTON, Aug 16 — US President Donald Trump said yesterday he plans to announce tariffs on steel and semiconductors in the coming weeks. 'I'll be setting tariffs next week and the week after, on steel and, I would say, chips. Chips and semiconductors, we'll be setting sometime next week, the week after,' Trump said onboard Air Force One as he headed to Alaska for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said the levy rate would be 'lower at the beginning' but 'very high after a certain period of time,' as a way to encourage businesses to relocate operations to the United States. The president said his policy would prompt companies in key industries like automobiles and artificial intelligence to relocate in order to 'beat the tariffs,' which could be 200 or 300 per cent. Trump has also said he would employ this strategy with pharmaceuticals. On August 6, Trump announced a 100 per cent tariff on semiconductors from firms that do not invest in the United States. Trump has already instituted tariffs on steel, announcing an initial 25 per cent levy that was later doubled to 50 per cent. — AFP

Legal spotlight falls on Roblox as US state sues over child safety and online predators

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 16 — The US state of Louisiana has filed a lawsuit accusing Roblox of facilitating the exploitation of children, prompting the online game platform to reject the claim as 'untrue' yesterday. A lawsuit filed by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill contends that Silicon Valley-based Roblox facilitates distribution of child sexual abuse material and the exploitation of minors. 'Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritises user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety,' Murrill maintained in a release. The lawsuit charges Roblox with 'knowingly and intentionally' failing to implement basic safety controls to protect children. Nearly 82 million people use Roblox daily, with more than half of them being younger than 18 years of age, according to the suit. 'Any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue,' the company said yesterday in a posted response to the filing. 'No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection,' the company added, stressing that it works 'continuously' to promote a safe online environment on the platform. The Roblox online gaming and creation platform was founded in 2004 and allows users to play, create and share virtual experiences. Roblox is one of the most popular online platforms for children, 'offering a vibrant world of interactive games, imaginative play, and creative self-expression,' according to the nonprofit Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI). A FOSI guide available at its website 'walks parents through the basics of Roblox, the ways children commonly engage with it, and how to use built-in features like content filters, chat settings, and screen time controls' for safety. Roblox announced major safety upgrades late last year, introducing remote parental controls and restricting communication features for users under 13. US-based FOSI endorsed the changes at the time, its chief saying Roblox was taking 'significant steps toward building a safer digital environment.' — AFP

UN Emergency Response Fund Allocates US$214 Mln In H1: Spokesman

NEW YORK, Aug 16 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) allocated US$214 million in the first half of this year to support people in two dozen countries, including drought relief in Afghanistan and climate resilience initiatives elsewhere, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Friday, reported Xinhua. Over the last 19 years, CERF channelled over US$9 billion in life-saving aid to people in need across over 110 countries and territories, supported by contributions from 143 out of 193 UN member states, along with observers and other donors, Dujarric said at a daily briefing. The UN secretary-general has appointed 12 new experts to the group that advises him on the distribution of the CERF funds, the spokesman said.
