Legal spotlight falls on Roblox as US state sues over child safety and online predators
A lawsuit filed by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill contends that Silicon Valley-based Roblox facilitates distribution of child sexual abuse material and the exploitation of minors.
'Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritises user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety,' Murrill maintained in a release.
The lawsuit charges Roblox with 'knowingly and intentionally' failing to implement basic safety controls to protect children.
Nearly 82 million people use Roblox daily, with more than half of them being younger than 18 years of age, according to the suit.
'Any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue,' the company said yesterday in a posted response to the filing.
'No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection,' the company added, stressing that it works 'continuously' to promote a safe online environment on the platform.
The Roblox online gaming and creation platform was founded in 2004 and allows users to play, create and share virtual experiences.
Roblox is one of the most popular online platforms for children, 'offering a vibrant world of interactive games, imaginative play, and creative self-expression,' according to the nonprofit Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI).
A FOSI guide available at its website 'walks parents through the basics of Roblox, the ways children commonly engage with it, and how to use built-in features like content filters, chat settings, and screen time controls' for safety.
Roblox announced major safety upgrades late last year, introducing remote parental controls and restricting communication features for users under 13.

MANILA: The pastor and American founder of a Pampanga-based child care facility accused of child abuse is now under the Bureau of Immigration's (BI) watchlist, preventing him from leaving the Philippines, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Megan Manahan, director of the agency's Standards Bureau (SB), confirmed the move, saying it would ensure Pastor Jeremy Keith Ferguson's attendance in all court hearings on the case. Ferguson is the founder and director of New Life Baptist Church of Mexico, Pampanga, Inc. (NLBCMPI). 'So this means that we are certain he is here in the Philippines to face what he needs to face regarding the abuses he committed,' Manahan said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 17), as quoted in an earlier interview with DZMM. Citing the BI, the DSWD said a commitment order was issued last week for the transfer of Ferguson to the BI Warden Facility in Bicutan, Taguig City, following a request from Pampanga police for assistance in handling the American national's custody. The agency added that a cease-and-desist order had also been issued against Ferguson after it discovered alleged abuses committed against minors under his facility's care, along with its 'failure to comply with standards that ensure the proper protection of children-residents.' Ferguson was arrested on August 13 and is facing two counts of violating Section 10 (a) of Republic Act 7610, or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act, with bail set at P160,000. 'He is technically eligible for bail, but because he also has an immigration charge, he cannot be released. He will be committed to the Bureau of Immigration,' Manahan clarified. The DSWD revealed that its Standards Bureau (SB) team conducted an inspection of the facility on August 12, during which children reported experiencing 'physical, verbal, and psychological abuse allegedly committed by Ferguson and some house parents.' All 158 children were transferred to the DSWD's Reception and Study Center for Children in Lubao town and are now receiving psychosocial support and other interventions from the agency's social workers. In response, Reuben Abante, senior pastor of the Lighthouse Bible Baptist Church and Ministries and brother of Manila 6th District Rep. Bienvenido 'Benny' Abante Jr., urged the DSWD to 'carefully review' the allegations, 'reconsider actions' against Ferguson and his ministry in Pampanga, and 'reinstate the children.' Citing Republic Act No. 11897, or the National Baptist Day Act, Abante said the country must 'recognize the Baptists for the continuous pursuit of their evangelical mission to contribute to nation-building by establishing Christian schools that instill academic excellence and build character in individuals, and churches that proclaim, teach, and share biblical principles for the betterment of society.' Eighteen-year-old pimp charged as Keningau police smash syndicate exploiting secondary schoolgirls for sex
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Police in Keningau, Sabah have dismantled a human trafficking syndicate that allegedly exploited secondary school students as sex victims, following a series of special operations between July 24 and 29. Keningau District Police Chief, Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai, told Harian Metro that investigations revealed the syndicate had recruited teenage girls, including two Form Two students, to be prostituted to customers. 'The activity came to light after the victims' parents lodged a report on July 24. 'Following this, a team from the Keningau District Criminal Investigation Division rescued four victims aged between 13 and 21, and arrested eight individuals to assist in the investigation,' he said when contacted by the national daily today. He added that an 18-year-old girl, known as 'Elly', was believed to have acted as a pimp and has already been charged in court under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. According to him, the syndicate used social media applications to seek customers, charging around RM200 per service before sending the victims to designated hotels. The proceeds were then split between the suspects and the victims. 'All victims have been taken to Keningau Hospital for medical examination and placed at a Women and Children's Protection Shelter. 'For the two underage victims, the court has granted a three-month protection order, and they have been placed at the Ampang Protection Home in Selangor until 13 November,' he said.
