TRNSMT warning as NHS bosses urge revellers to keep safe with temperatures to soar

Daily Recorda day ago
With temperatures set to soar to a blistering 29C today and 27C tomorrow, gig-goers are told to look after themselves and stay hydrated during the heatwave.
Thousands of music fans descending on Glasgow Green for Scotland's biggest music festival are being urged to keep safe in the sun.
With temperatures set to soar to a blistering 29C today and 27C tomorrow, health bosses warned revellers heading to TRNSMT to look after themselves and stay hydrated during the heatwave.

Director of public health at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Dr Emilia Crichton advised people to cover up to avoid sunburn and sunstroke throughout the event.

She added: 'This weekend is looking like a great time to get outside for warmer weather. No matter what you're doing, please enjoy the good weather safely by protecting yourself when in the sun, staying hydrated, and having common medicines to hand.
'We know tens of thousands of people will be heading to TRNSMT and we hope everyone has a fantastic time.
'We ask festival-goers to look after themselves and others so everyone can enjoy the event safely.'
The Met Office has said the current heatwave will last longer than the one experienced earlier this summer, and will cover a larger part of Scotland.
Kilmarnock rockers Biffy Clyro will headline the festival today while Fontaines DC, The Kooks and Sigrid will also play.

Indie artist Jake Bugg will play the King Tut's Stage, which will be headlined by Underworld. Gates open at 12pm, with a packed schedule of performances across all four stages.
The festival will finish on Sunday night with Northern Irish-Scottish outfit Snow Patrol headlining.

American pop artist Gracie Abrams, English singer Jade and Tom Walker will play the main stage too.

Brits finally realise there's truth to it feeling 'hotter in the UK than abroad'

The UK has been sweltering in the third heatwave of the year, with temperatures peaking at 33C yesterday. Brits are renowned for complaining about the weather - and it seems like they have good reason to A heatwave has swept across the UK this weekend, with peaks of 33C recorded on Saturday (July 12) and possible highs of 31C expected today (July 13). Temperatures are forecast to dip slightly, before cooler weather sets in on Monday, bringing "heavy spells of rain" in many areas, according to the Met Office. Amber heat health alerts are in place for the Midlands, southern and eastern England until 9am on Monday. The latest heatwave has also led to a hosepipe ban being declared for millions of people in England. This is the third heatwave of the year, and more "hot spells or heatwaves" are expected through to the end of July, spelling more misery for Brits. When it's hot in the UK, there seems to be an unanimous opinion that it's "different" than when it's hot abroad. People in the UK are known for loving complaining about the weather. An American who lives in the UK called Russell recently took to TikTok to say: "I am never doubting a Brit again when they tell me that the UK sun hits different. I feel like I'm in a sauna." ‌ Another American known as @mortonmunchies said: "How are we surviving this heat? I'm not used to the heat and not having air conditioning." But it turns out Brits have a good reason to moan when it's hot - because there's a reason it feels hotter in the UK than some other places. ‌ Good Morning Britain weather presenter Laura Tobin took to social media to explain: "Some people might be thinking, when I'm on holiday and it's 30 degrees, it never feels anywhere near as hot as it is when we're in the UK. Why is that? It is down to humidity. The humidity in the UK is much higher. A higher humidity means that when you sweat you can't evaporate that sweat as quickly and it means that you feel hotter. So the temperatures in the UK and abroad are the same, but it does feel hotter here in the UK." ‌ The post received lots of interaction, with one person saying: "Thanks for clarifying that Laura. We wondered why we felt it so much." Another simply said: "I've always wondered about this." And someone else wrote: "Yup, humidity makes so much difference. Also in places like London, the urban heat island effect has a lot to answer for!" NHS doctor Dr Karan Raj also recently took to TikTok to explain more about this phenomenon. He said: "In the UK, the relative humidity is higher than in countries with dry heat. This makes it harder for our bodies to cool down because sweat doesn't evaporate as well. So you feel hot and sticky like a roast barbecue pig. This is why 35C in a dry climate can feel more comfortable than 25C in a place with high relative humidity." Another reason could be that in the UK our buildings aren't built to cope with the heat. Dr Raj said: "In the UK, the buildings are designed to retain heat because the weather is usually cold, soggy and silly." We also don't usually have air conditioning. Annie Shuttleworth, a Met Office meteorologist, told Stylist that how we experience heat at home versus abroad plays a huge role. "When we experience heat abroad, we're usually on holiday, and may be close to a pool or the beach."

Gracie Abrams and Snow Patrol to play Trnsmt's last day

The sweltering heat is set to continue with Trnsmt gig-goers facing temperatures of around 26C on the last day. Snow Patrol will headline Scotland's biggest music festival on Sunday as the three-day event comes to a close. Those attending Glasgow Green will hear from Gracie Abrams, Jade, Myles Smith and Tom Walker, among others. Indie artist Jake Bugg told the PA news agency on Saturday that Scottish crowds 'have always been great', adding: 'I've always enjoyed every gig I've played here (Glasgow).' Dylan McNish, 22, attended the festival with his dad, Duncan, 49, from Corby, to see Fontaines DC, the penultimate act on Saturday. Gracie Abrams performs at Glastonbury (Image: Yui Mok) Speaking at their first festival together, Dylan said: 'I'm not coping with the heat so well. 'But the atmosphere has been great. We are seeing Inhaler. We are buzzing for Underworld. Thumbs up so far.' Fontaines DC played to an energetic crowd in the evening, with some of the biggest cheers being 'free Palestine' chants. Biffy Clyro headlined the night before tens of thousands of fans left Glasgow Green for home. Aimie Race, 47, who took her daughter to her first festival, said she 'could not have asked for better weather'. 'It's been really nice here. Everyone is really friendly. Everyone has desperately been looking out for shady spots but we are enjoying the sunshine.' Beth Ballantyne, 21, said she passed out on Friday due to the heat, but pledged to persevere, describing TRMSMT as '10 out of 10'. Daniel Clare, an 18-year-old who travelled from Dublin with his two friends, said he was disappointed that Kneecap was removed from the festival. He urged people to 'drink water and have a good time' amid the sweltering heat. READ MORE: Norm McDonald, 16, said he was 'cooking' and 'scared' of getting burned, although that did not stop him from going shirtless throughout the entire festival. He described 50 Cent's set as 'nine out 10' and said he would have given it a 10 if he didn't lose his friends for the rapper's set. His friend Carson Smith, also 16, was more impressed, giving the Friday a 'banging 10 out of 10'. 'The sun's out,' he said, 'That's all that matters.' Ashleigh Willmot, 29, travelled from Essex to see Biffy Clyro – a band she had never seen before Saturday. 'I was expecting it to be raining, so I'm underprepared, but I'm loving it – it's amazing,' she said. 'Everyone is super chill here. Everyone is doing their own thing – it's great. 'Everyone is happy. It's really good, the buzz.' Biffy Clyro headlined on Saturday night (Image: LESLEY MARTIN) Police Scotland said it made six arrests on Friday around Glasgow Green, including a hate crime charge. Police had a visible presence throughout the festival, and more arrests are expected to be made as it comes to a close. Scottish singer Amy Macdonald played a secret set on the second day of the festival, although many fans of Wunderhorse were left disappointed after the band dropped out due to illness, with singer Miles Kane replacing them. Norwegian artist Sigrid also took to the main stage on Saturday, donning a tartan Trnsmt top. She told the PA news agency it was one of the hottest shows she had ever done, but said it was 'really fun'. However, she admitted to not 'feeling very well' amid the hot afternoon sun during her set. Those attending Sunday have been urged to seek the shade, wear hats and put on sunscreen as the sunny weather continues. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde also urged music fans to drink plenty of water during the heat.
