Two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber returns to Cleveland as Guardians special assistant
CLEVELAND (AP) — The only two-time Cy Young Award winner in franchise history has returned to the Cleveland Guardians.
Corey Kluber was hired as a special assistant for pitching Wednesday, rejoining the organization that he played for from 2011-2019 as part of a 13-year career in the majors. He also spent one season apiece with the Rangers, Yankees, Rays and Red Sox.
Kluber compiled a 98-58 record and a 3.16 ERA with 1,461 strikeouts for Cleveland, ranking second in team history with a .628 winning percentage. The right-hander retired prior to the 2024 season with a 116-77 overall mark, a 3.44 ERA and 1,725 strikeouts over 1,641 2/3 innings.
A three-time All-Star with Cleveland, Kluber won the American League Cy Young Award in 2014 and 2017. He started three games for the then-Indians in the 2016 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. He went 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA in six postseason starts.
The Cy Young Award was first handed out in 1956, the same year Cleveland great Bob Feller retired from baseball.

Joe Flacco's first Browns stint, revisited: Stats, results from 2023
The Cleveland Browns have officially named Joe Flacco their Week 1 starter for the 2025 season, marking the veteran's first Week 1 start since 2022. But it's far from Flacco's first start for the Browns despite him joining them as a free agent this offseason. Flacco, 40, made five regular season starts and one playoff start for Cleveland in 2023, playing well enough to secure a playoff appearance for the Browns. He also started their one postseason game that year. After that season, Flacco won the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year award over heavy favorite and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. JOE FLACCO: Browns name 18-year veteran starting QB for Week 1 of 2025 NFL season Flacco parlayed that excellent stretch into a one-year stint with the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. He appeared in eight games and started six of them to the tune of a 2-4 record with a 65.3% completion rate and 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions. USA TODAY Sports revisited the 18-year veteran's late-season cameo for the Browns in 2023 in honor of his being named the team's Week 1 starter this year. Here's a recap of Flacco's performance in 2023: Joe Flacco 2023 stats: How veteran fared in first Browns stint Record: 4-1 (Postseason: 0-1) Completion rate: 123-of-204 (60.3%) Passing yards: 1,616 Touchdowns: 13 Interceptions: 8 Passer rating: 90.2 Flacco took over as the starter for the Browns in Week 13 of the 2023 season following a season-ending shoulder injury to Deshaun Watson and a concussion to then-Browns backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson. After losing his first start in Cleveland, Flacco ripped off four straight wins between Weeks 14 and 17 to secure a spot in the playoffs for the Browns by Week 18. In each of those four wins, the then-38-year-old passed for over 300 yards and threw for multiple touchdowns. Flacco and many of the Browns' starters rested for the season finale before heading to Houston to face the Texans in the wild-card round. The Super Bowl 47 MVP completed 73.9% of his passes for 307 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in Cleveland's 45-14 loss. Flacco's upcoming Week 1 start will be his first start for the Browns since that playoff game in Houston and his first Week 1 start since 2022 with the New York Jets. Why Alex Bregman Wants To Hold Off On Extension Talks With Red Sox
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Alex Bregman has been everything the Boston Red Sox hoped he would be when he signed a $120 million contract in February. Despite missing over a month due to a quad injury in late May, the 31-year-old is having a career year, second only to his 2019 campaign, which saw him finish second in MVP voting. The contract that Bregman and the Red Sox agreed to is technically a three-year deal, but contains opt-outs after the 2025 and 2026 seasons. There has been much speculation over whether Bregman could exercise his opt-out after this season due to his stellar performance on the field. HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 12: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after a two run home run during the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August 12, 2025 in Houston, Texas. MoreEarlier this month, Bregman stated that he prefers to wait until the offseason to engage in contract extension talks with the Red Sox. Scott Neville and I sat down with Bregman to discuss this decision. "I feel like for me it would be a disservice to be thinking about anything other than just winning baseball games right now," Bregman told us on the "ITM Podcast." "Focusing on this team, this year and trying to do anything I can to help lead this team and help get everybody prepared to play down the stretch and get into the postseason." The two-time World Series champion is no stranger to the postseason, or to playing at Fenway in October, having played the Red Sox three times in the playoffs. "I'm really just focused on showing up every day, competing and getting after it, trying to get back to the postseason," Bregman went on to say. The Red Sox have not made the postseason since 2021, and have missed the chance to play in October in five of the last six seasons. A deep postseason run with Bregman at the helm could help the Red Sox's chances of retaining the newest piece of their leadership core. Bregman is currently slashing .305/.387/.546 with a .933 OPS and 16 homers in 79 games. More MLB: Red Sox Bolster Infield By Adding Gold Glove First Baseman: Report

Veteran Joe Flacco selected as Browns starting QB for season opener against Bengals on Sept. 7
After four weeks, Joe Flacco has emerged as the winner of the Cleveland Browns' four-way quarterback competition. The Browns announced on Monday that Flacco will get the start when the Browns host AFC North rival Cincinnati in the Sept. 7 opener. Coach Kevin Stefanski indicated over the past week that decision was coming. The Browns were off on Sunday after their 22-13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles but had a team meeting on Monday. The 40-year old Flacco beat out Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Deshaun Watson is on the roster, but is expected to miss the season because of injuries. 'I think it is hard when you're only getting a couple reps here and there because it goes back to you try so hard to be perfect, and then usually you end up hurting yourself a little bit. But the last couple weeks, honestly it's been pretty good for me,' Flacco said last week about the competition after a practice against the Philadelphia Eagles. "I've got to get more reps and get comfortable and feel like I'm doing things at a pretty high level. So, I can't complain.' Besides having 191 regular-season starts and going into his 18th season, Flacco was the only quarterback who has not missed time during training camp because of an injury. This is Flacco's second stint with the Browns. He won the AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in 2023 as a late-season signing after going 4-1 as a starter and averaging more than 300 passing yards per game as Cleveland made the playoffs for only the third time since its return in 1999. Flacco has not played in the preseason games, but has seen most of the first-team snaps throughout camp as well as getting plenty of work in joint practices against Carolina and Philadelphia. Flacco will see action on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams since Stefanski said the preseason finale will serve as a dress rehearsal for the starters. 'He's the same guy every single day. I think that's one of the things you admire about Joe is how he approaches his business,' Stefanski said about Flacco during last week's joint workouts against the Eagles. "He's done a really nice job in camp. He's also done a really nice job just providing leadership to the quarterback room, to the offense, and to the football team.' Pickett was considered to be Flacco's main competition, but has been dealing with a hamstring injury. Pickett — a 2022 first-round pick with Pittsburgh — is going into his fourth season after being acquired in an offseason trade with Philadelphia. Pickett is considered to be more athletic and can make plays on the run, but he has not been a full participant in a practice since July 26. Gabriel, who missed the preseason opener at Carolina on Aug. 8 because of a hamstring strain, played the first half against the Eagles. In five series, he completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards. Sanders missed the second day of joint practices against the Eagles and did not play in the game after suffering an oblique injury last Wednesday. Sanders got the start against Carolina and completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two TD passes. Stefanski was optimistic that Pickett or Sanders could possibly return to practice sometime this week. ___ AP NFL:
