Good times keep rolling for James Orman as he lands first Hong Kong Derby ride
Victorious with two of the first six rides of his initial six-week contract, Orman has already had his stay extended until the end of the season and now he will take part in Hong Kong's most coveted contest for the first time.
'It's great news,' said the Australian. 'I'm just excited to have a Derby ride, for one, and it's great to have one that looks like he can be a good chance in the race if he can get circumstances to suit.
'It looks like anything could win the race and I'm riding for a gun trainer, too, so I can't wait.'
While Californiatotality won't demand the attention of some of the bigger names in the build-up to this weekend, two of his three wins this season have been over 1,800m and he will be sent out by a Hong Kong legend with two Derby wins on his training CV.
'He looks like he should run the distance, so that's a positive, and it looks a fairly open race,' said Orman.
For Orman, a three-time champion jockey in Queensland, earning a Derby mount is just the next step in continuing to entrench himself in the city's riding ranks.
'I'm really happy. I've just got to keep building the relationships with everyone and keep trying to ride good races every time,' said the jockey, who has five rides at Happy Valley on Wednesday night including the smart Aurora Lady in the evening's Class Two.
Cruz will take a two-pronged attack into Sunday's Derby, confirming Karis Teetan will replace James McDonald aboard his other runner, Stunning Peach.
'I'm very happy with both of them, they're going well. They'll get the 2,000m, which is a positive,' he said. 'The 2,000m is definitely more appropriate for Stunning Peach.'
Like Orman, Cruz looks a winning chance in the Class Two Sports Handicap (1,200m) at the midweek meeting, saddling up Son Pak Fu, Superb Capitalist and Gustosisimo.
'Son Pak Fu is pretty good at Happy Valley. He does have top weight to carry but he's still the better horse of my three, I reckon,' said Cruz.

In other Derby jockey news, William Buick will jet into ride Markwin for Cody Mo Wai-kit, joining Joao Moreira (Packing Angel), Ryan Moore (Mickley), Christophe Soumillon (Noisy Boy) and Craig Williams (Cap Ferrat) in descending on Sha Tin for the HK$26 million showcase.
Looking further ahead, the Jockey Club has received 23 entries for the two Group Two contests on March 30.
The Chairman's Trophy (1,600m) is likely to have a full field, with big names Beauty Eternal and Galaxy Patch joined by the likes of Beauty Joy, Chancheng Glory, Five G Patch, Mugen, Straight Arron and Sunlight Power among 15 nominations.
Connections of only seven gallopers have shown a willingness to tackle Ka Ying Rising in the Sprint Cup (1,200m), with Beauty Waves, Copartner Prance, California Spangle, Gorgeous Win, Helios Express, Lucky With You and Magic Control setting their sights on the world's best sprinter.

Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead
Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead Kaden Groves celebrates winning stage 20 of the Tour de France. Photo: Reuters Alpecin rider Kaden Groves won stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday after a long-range escape that saw the Australian finish well ahead of the big guns. Runaway overall race leader Tadej Pogacar maintained his lead over Jonas Vingegaard ahead of Sunday's 21st and final stage in Paris. The Team UAE rider has a 4min 24sec advantage heading into what could be a tricky finale, a 132km ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, but featuring three ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre. The champion-in-waiting was left shaking his head after almost getting taken down in a fall 500m from the line on Saturday, as lashing rain made the roads hazardous on the run into Pontarlier. This was a third stage win for Alpecin after Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel took the two opening wins. "They gave me a free role in the final days," Groves said after both Philipsen and Van der Poel pulled out. "I'm going to enjoy this one and celebrate with my team and enjoy the Champs tomorrow." Just 158 riders crossed the rolling hills at the foot of the Jura, and many looked haggard after the fast racing in the Alps. So along the Swiss border, most of the peloton seemed happy to let an escape get a 7-minute lead after an exhausting slog that started July 5. (AFP)

British and Irish Lions beat Australia in first Test
British and Irish Lions beat Australia in first Test British and Irish Lions' Sione Tuipulotu celebrates scoring a try for the tourists. Photo: Reuters A relentless British and Irish Lions were ferocious in attack and solid in defence to edge a dogged Australia and win a bruising first Test 27-19 in Brisbane on Saturday. The tourists repeatedly laid siege to the Wallabies' line for a 17-5 lead at the break before soaking up second-half pressure to bank the win with both sides scoring three tries. A late Australia try meant the scoreline flattered a poor Wallabies side, with the Lions never looking in trouble after opening up a 24-5 lead shortly after half-time. Played in front of 52,229 fans at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium, many wearing the Red of the Lions, the tourists proved too strong for a brave, but outgunned Australian outfit. With Scottish fly-half Finn Russell pulling the strings in the backs and outstanding loose forwards Tom Curry and Tadhg Beirne dominating up front, the Lions showed why they went into the Test as firm favourites. But despite being behind for all of the match, the Wallabies didn't roll over, and fears of a huge defeat never materialised. The Lions now head to the Melbourne Cricket Ground for next Saturday's second Test 1-0 up in the three-match series. (AFP)

Title races go down to the wire as Derek Leung looks to strike a Tony Cruz Award blow
Derek Leung still has a chance to win the Tony Cruz Award. Photos: Kenneth Chan It is now or never for Derek Leung Ka-chun as he looks to Beauty Joy to be the catalyst to spark his fading Tony Cruz Award hopes back to life at Sha Tin on Sunday. The 36-year-old is in a three-way shoot-out for the local riders' premiership, with Matthew Poon Ming-fai leading the way on 36 and Matthew Chadwick sitting second on 34. Leung has two meetings to claw back three winners to draw level with Poon, with his Sunday book of eight rides looking the strongest of the trio. He rides Beauty Joy in the feature Class One Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association Trophy (1,600m), with the Tony Cruz-trained eight-year-old looking to back up a last-start win in the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m). Leung also rides Rainbow Seven, who has finished in the top three in all of his racecourse starts, in the Class Four Victory Marvel Handicap (1,200m), and Smart Fat Cat, who has surged home in both his starts so far and is a leading chance in the Class Four Medic Kingdom Handicap (1,400m). Of his rivals, Poon's best chance comes in the form of debut winner Voyage Boss, who had excuses last start and is a big shout in the Class Four Medic Kingdom Handicap (1,400m), while Chadwick will be hoping a rejuvenated Devas Twelve can provide him with a winner in the Class Four Pingwu Spark Handicap (1,400m). Heading into Sha Tin, John Size holds a likely insurmountable six-win lead over David Hayes in the trainers' premiership race, with both holding leading chances in many of Sunday's races. Size has a trio in the feature Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association Trophy thanks to Beauty Eternal, Bundle Award and Young Champion, though Mickley – who was second in the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m) – looks to be his best chance on the card down in grade for the Class Three Sight Winner Handicap (1,600m). Awesome Treasure, armed with Britney Wong Po-ni's 10lb claim, looks to be Hayes' best chance in the Class Four Big Profit Handicap (1,200m) from a good draw in stall five.
