
Chinese robots ran against humans in the world's first humanoid half-marathon. They lost by a mile
If the idea of robots taking on humans in a road race conjures dystopian images of android athletic supremacy, then fear not, for now at least.
More than 20 two-legged robots competed in the world's first humanoid half-marathon in China on Saturday, and – though technologically impressive – they were far from outrunning their human masters over the long distance.
Teams from several companies and universities took part in the race, a showcase of China's advances on humanoid technology as it plays catch-up with the US, which still boasts the more sophisticated models.
And the chief of the winning team said their robot – though bested by the humans in this particular race – was a match for similar models from the West, at a time when the race to perfect humanoid technology is hotting up.
Coming in a variety of shapes and sizes, the robots jogged through Beijing's southeastern Yizhuang district, home to many of the capital's tech firms.
Over the past few months, videos of China's humanoid robots performing bike rides, roundhouse kicks and side flips have blown up the internet, often amplified by state media as a key potential driver of economic growth.
In a 2023 policy document, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology identified the humanoid robotics industry as a 'new frontier in technological competition,' setting a 2025 target for mass production and secure supply chains for core components.
Fears have mounted in recent years about how artificial intelligence – and robots – may one day outsmart humans.
And while AI models are fast gaining ground, sparking concern for everything from security to the future of work, Saturday's race suggested that humans still at least have the upper hand when it comes to running.
The robots were pitted against 12,000 human contestants, running side by side with them in a fenced-off lane.
After setting off from a country park, participating robots had to overcome slight slopes and a winding 21-kilometer (13-mile) circuit before they could reach the finish line, according to state-run outlet Beijing Daily.
Just as human runners needed to replenish themselves with water, robot contestants were allowed to get new batteries during the race. Companies were also allowed to swap their androids with substitutes when they could no longer compete, though each substitution came with a 10-minute penalty.
The first robot across the finish line, Tiangong Ultra – created by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center – finished the route in two hours and 40 minutes. That's nearly two hours short of the human world record of 56:42, held by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo. The winner of the men's race on Saturday finished in 1 hour and 2 minutes.
Tang Jian, chief technology officer for the robotics innovation center, said Tiangong Ultra's performance was aided by long legs and an algorithm allowing it to imitate how humans run a marathon.
'I don't want to boast but I think no other robotics firms in the West have matched Tiangong's sporting achievements,' Tang said, according to the Reuters news agency, adding that the robot switched batteries just three times during the race.
The 1.8-meter robot came across a few challenges during the race, which involved the multiple battery changes. It also needed a helper to run alongside it with his hands hovering around his back, in case of a fall.
Most of the robots required this kind of support, with a few tied to a leash. Some were led by a remote control.
Amateur human contestants running in the other lane had no difficulty keeping up, with the curious among them taking out their phones to capture the robotic encounters as they raced along.

Cheptegei to run in Antrim Coast Half Marathon
Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei is to compete in the Antrim Coast Half Marathon on Sunday 24 August. The 28-year-old Ugandan won gold in the 10,000m at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, setting a new Olympic record in the process, and holds the world record at 5,000m and 10,000m. He is the reigning three-time world champion in the 10,000m and also won gold in the 5,000m in the 2020 Olympics. Cheptegei says he is "very excited" to make his debut in the event. "I've watched the race on television and the course looks beautiful and very fast," he said. "My teammates both hold the course record and now it's my turn to run here." Race director James McIlroy said Cheptegei's involvement is the "culmination of a few years' hard work behind the scenes". "To have the reigning double Olympic champion and double world record holder headline a very fast race, we believe it to be the fastest in the world, it's going to be fantastic," McIlroy told BBC Sport NI. McIlroy explained that previous attempts had been made to bring Cheptegei to the event. "This isn't the first conversation we've had on it. He was going to come for a couple of years but the diary had to suit timing wise. "Obviously the Olympic Games last year in which he was retaining his title didn't help us for 2024. "Once he confirmed the Amsterdam marathon, we were confirmed as well, which was fantastic news for us." McIlroy is expecting other big names to sign up for this year's event but acknowledges Cheptegei will be the main attraction. "Effectively what you have got is the most high-profile runner in the world currently running on one of the most beautiful roads in the world. "We know he's bringing two pacemakers. He has said he's going to run a very fast time by his own admission. "He has run two half marathons in the last two years, one in New York City and one in New Delhi. They are both massive races so to be featured in the same breath as those races is fantastic."

China's humanoid robots will not replace human workers, Beijing official says
By Eduardo Baptista BEIJING (Reuters) -China's humanoid robots will not replace human workers and cause mass unemployment, according to a Chinese official who oversees a tech hub in Beijing, amid a rapid expansion of the sector and state funding for it. Liang Liang, a deputy director at the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, which hosts one of China's largest tech hubs, said in an interview on Friday with foreign media that he does not believe that humanoid robots will replace their human creators, but will boost productivity and operate in hazardous environments. "We don't believe robots will make people unemployed, but rather they'll boost efficiency or take on tasks humans are unwilling to do - like exploring the vast universe or the ocean depths where people can't go. Machines can assist us in that exploration," Liang said. "When it's nighttime and humans need rest, machines could keep working, giving us better, cheaper, and more user-friendly products. So we see this as the direction for our future development," he added. Liang explained that the world's first robot half-marathon held last month in Beijing was deliberately set up in a way that would highlight his and other officials' hopes that these humanoids will support and assist humans, rather than replace them. The half-marathon featured two tracks separated by a railing, with humans competing against each other on one side while on the other side 20 teams each operated a robot, varying wildly in size and ability. "You see, in the marathon, humans have their track where they push their physical limits, and the machines have their own track where they jointly challenge their limits - but they aren't trying to take over the human course to sprint to the finish line. The future will be like this too," Liang said. Liang spoke to reporters at the headquarters of state-backed X-Humanoid, also known as the Beijing Humanoid Robotics Innovation Centre, whose robot Tiangong Ultra won the inaugural robot half-marathon. Besides the sports-focused Ultra model, which can reach a top speed of 12 kph (7.56 mph), the centre also displayed other protypes that showed it was working on robots that can complete mundane tasks in the face of obstructions and changing environments. In one demonstration, an employee repeatedly moved the position of a piece of litter or snatched it from the robot's hand, which would then relocate the object and carry out the task until it was completed, a self-corrective ability the centre says will be key in turning the humanoids into productive workers.
