A traditional bonfire ceremony marked Auroville's twin celebration of 153rd birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo and the nation's 79th Independence Day.
The event was marked by a virtual address from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and elaborate celebrations across Auroville's International township.
In his address to a gathering that included Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and Auroville Foundation Secretary Jayanti S. Ravi, Mr. Pradhan drew powerful connections between Sri Aurobindo's revolutionary ideas and contemporary-India's development goals.
'Sri Aurobindo saw Independence not as the end of a struggle but as the start of a new journey where India would lead the world with its spiritual wisdom and strong values,' the Minister said adding this vision was in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Viksit Bharat 2047 mission.
Mr. Pradhan also joined the celebrations and held discussions with Ms. Ravi and G. Seetharaman, Officer on Special Duty, Auroville Foundation about the township's growth and educational contributions.
Earlier, flag hoisting ceremonies took place at multiple venues in Auroville. The event brought together teams from key institutions, including Auroville Town Development Council (ATDC), Sri Aurobindo International Institute of Educational Research (SAIIER) and Fund and Management Committee.

Vidhana Soudha illumination draws massive crowd

Bengaluru: The special illumination of Vidhana Soudha with the colours of the Indian tricolour, initiated by Assembly Speaker U T Khader, attracted unprecedented crowds during the Independence Day weekend. Marking the 79th Independence Day, the iconic state legislature building was lit up in saffron, white, and green, creating a spectacle that drew people from across Karnataka and beyond. According to rough estimates, more than 45,000 people visited the site each evening between August 15 and 17. The surge in footfall led to traffic congestion and crowd management challenges, with police personnel deployed at the venue struggling to regulate the flow of visitors. On some evenings, authorities were compelled to switch off the lights earlier than planned to disperse the swelling crowds. The initiative, which Khader had launched as part of a permanent illumination programme for the Assembly, has won wide appreciation from citizens. Many described the sight of the heritage building draped in the tricolour as a 'proud and emotional experience' during the national celebration.

Jagan should apologise to nation for not hoisting national flag, demands Lokesh

Amaravati: Minister Nara Lokesh on Sunday demanded that former Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy apologise to the nation for skipping the hoisting of the national flag on Independence Day. He termed the action of the YSRCP leader as an insult to the country's freedom struggle. 'Skipping the flag hoisting of our tricolour on Independence Day is not just arrogance, it is a deep insult to our country's freedom struggle,' Lokesh posted on the social media platform 'X'. Lokesh, who is the general secretary of the TDP and son of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, said Jagan should apologise to the nation. The TDP has already criticised Jagan Mohan Reddy for not hoisting the national flag on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day. Senior TDP leader and Sarvepalli MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy sought to know why Jagan, despite being the president of a political party, failed to recognise the significance of Independence Day. 'Why so much arrogance,' asked the former minister in a post on 'X'. The TDP leader asked Jagan if he did not remember the day when lakhs of people sacrificed their lives to achieve independence for the country. 'Just because you are frustrated with the Pulivendula ZPTC result, do you forget a national festival? This is a black mark in your political life,' posted Chandramohan Reddy. Another senior leader and Ponnur MLA, Dhulipalla Narendra Kumar, accused Jagan of insulting the national flag. He alleged that Jagan humiliated freedom fighters by not unfurling the national flag. 'The defeat of the YSRCP in Pulivendula ZPTC by-election may be the reason for Jagan's frustration. However, abstaining from hoisting the national flag reflects his mental condition,' Narendra Kumar said. YSR Congress party suffered defeat in the by-elections to Pulivendula and Ontimitta Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) in Jagan's home district of YSR Kadapa.

Why did Data Patterns, Bharat Dynamics and other defence stocks soar up to 4%? Key reasons explained

Defence stocks came under investors' radar today, August 18, with names like Data Patterns, Zen Technologies, Bharat Dynamics, Garden Reach Shipbuilders, DCX Systems, ideaForge Technology, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders rising between 1% and 4% following the government's strong push to manufacture critical military equipment locally in a bid to further reduce dependence on foreign technologies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address, announced 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra' and renewed his call for homegrown jet engines. The announcement of indigenous air-defence system came just days after Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir reportedly hinted at targeting Indian assets along the border. During 'Operation Sindoor,' India showcased the strength of its indigenously developed defence systems by successfully intercepting drones and missiles launched by Pakistan. Modi's announcements further highlight India's commitment to producing critical military technologies entirely within the country and exporting them globally to friendly nations. This mission aims to develop a Dome-like defence system designed to safeguard critical sites, including civilian areas. Though the prime minister did not elaborate on the new air-defence system, experts suggested it could be on the lines of Israel's Iron Dome all-weather missile shield, known for its high effectiveness. Modi further urged Indian innovators and youngsters to develop jet engines within the country, ensuring that future defence technology is entirely home-grown and self-reliant. Work on an indigenous jet engine began nearly 35 years ago under the Kaveri engine programme. Sanctioned by the Cabinet Committee on Security in 1989, the project was intended to power the country's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). However, the engine is still not ready for operational use. The defence sector has been receiving a significant boost in recent years, with increased budget allocations that have expanded orders for domestic defence companies and strengthened the nation's borders amid escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region and along India's frontiers with China and Pakistan. In FY25, the country achieved a milestone as annual defence production reached an all-time high of ₹ 1.5 lakh crore, representing robust 18% growth over the previous fiscal's output of ₹ 1.27 lakh crore and an impressive 90% jump since FY20, when the figure was ₹ 79,071 crore. India's domestically manufactured defence products are also gaining global traction, with exports hitting a record high of ₹ 23,622 crore in FY25. The government now aims to achieve annual defence exports worth ₹ 50,000 crore by 2029, further expanding its global footprint. Orders for the BrahMos missile also surged after it played a crucial role in Operation Sindoor, targeting Pakistani military infrastructure, including air bases, army cantonments, and terror camps.
