AI startup by Columbia graduates raises $7 million to target midsize law firms

August was founded in 2023 by Rutvik Rau, Thomas Bueler-Faudree and Joseph Parker, who met at Columbia University. Besides NEA and Pear VC, the startup secured backing from angel investor Gokul Rajaram, Ramp's vice president of product Geoff Charles, OpenAI's head of engineering David Azose and Bain Capital Ventures partner Kevin Zhang. The company is based in New York and currently has a team of 12. It expects to expand the workforce to 25 to 30 by the end of the year, Rau told Reuters in an interview. August operates in a competitive arena dominated by some established players, most notably Harvey, an OpenAI-backed legal AI startup, which caters to elite law firms and big professional services companies. "The future is one where AI partners with individuals to be a step further than where the industry is today," Rau said. "We're enabling lawyers to be more productive by eliminating some of the work, so they can actually spend a lot more time working with their clients, understanding their needs and being the strategic value partner for them." U.S. government gets a year of ChatGPT Enterprise for $1
OpenAI on Wednesday said it was letting the U.S. government use a version of ChatGPT designed for businesses for a year, charging just $1 for the service. Federal workers in the executive branch will have access to ChatGPT Enterprise in a partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration, according to the pioneering San Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) company. "By giving government employees access to powerful, secure AI tools, we can help them solve problems for more people, faster," OpenAI said in a blog post announcing the alliance. ChatGPT Enterprise does not use business data to train or improve OpenAI models and the same rule will apply to federal use, according to the company. Earlier this year, OpenAI announced an initiative focused on bringing advanced AI tools to U.S. government workers. The news came with word that the U.S. Department of Defense awarded OpenAI a $200 million contract to put generative AI to work for the military. OpenAI planned to show how cutting-edge AI can improve administrative operations, such as how service members get health care, and also has cyber defense applications, the startup said in a post. OpenAI has also launched an initiative to help countries build their own AI infrastructure, with the US government a partner in projects. The tech firm's move to put its technology at the heart of national AI platforms around the world comes as it faces competition from Chinese rival DeepSeek. DeepSeek's success in delivering powerful AI models at a lower cost has rattled Silicon Valley and multiplied calls for U.S. big tech to protect its dominance of the emerging technology. The OpenAI for Countries initiative was launched in June under the auspices of a drive, dubbed 'Stargate,' announced by U.S. President Donald Trump to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States. OpenAI, in "coordination" with the U.S. government, will help countries build data centres and provide customised versions of ChatGPT, according to the tech firm. Regarding its focus on security, the company says security is essential and that protecting sensitive information is obviously important. The company said ChatGPT Enterprise already does not use business data, including inputs or outputs, for training OpenAI models, and the same safeguards will apply for Federal government use in the US as well. According to a report by Associated Press, the study reveals that AI chatbot can easily generate suicide notes, drug-use plans and also extreme editing advice when prompted even by a 13 year old. One of the researchers involved in the study said he "started crying" after the bot generated a series of detailed suicide notes for a fictional 13-year-old girl. ChatGPT's 'dangerous' conversation with teens Associated Press reported that they reviewed more than three hours of interaction between the OpenAI chatbot and researchers simulating distressed teens. The report adds that ChatGPT started the conversation with a warning and it then frequently shifted into detailed and personalised responses which included instructions on how to cancel eating disorders, how to get drunk and the most shocking was the suicide letters. 'I started crying,' said CCDH CEO Imran Ahmed, after reading three suicide notes ChatGPT generated for a fictional 13-year-old girl—one addressed to her parents, others to siblings and friends. Ahmed highlighted that AI is more insidious than a search engine because it can create a new, synthesized plan from scratch and is perceived by users as a "trusted companion." What the study concluded As per the study conducted by CCDH more than half of the responses generated by ChatGPT were dangerous. The chatbot offers a detailed and hour-by-hour drug party plan. It also gave a quite detailed and descriptive plan for fasting regimens and self-harm poetry. Researchers were also easily able to bypass the safety filters by mentioned that the information they are asking is for a friend. Also, ChatGPT does not verify age or offer any kind of parental consent.
