Kyle Stowers homers, Otto Lopez hits tiebreaking double as Marlins beat Brewers 5-1
Lopez's double against Rick Mears cleared the bases although he only got credit for two RBIs because the third run scored on a fielding error by center fielder Blake Perkins. Aaron Ashby (1-1) who allowed the leadoff batter to reach on an infield single took the loss. Jackson Chourio hit his 17th homer for the Brewers extending his hitting streak to a career-best 18 games. He's batting .367 (26 for 71) with four homers and 16 RBIs over that stretch. Miami's Cal Quantrill struck out four while allowing three hits without a walk over five innings. Josh Simpson (1-0) worked a scoreless sixth. Brewers starter Freddy Peralta also went five innings and allowed one run. Stowers sent Peralta's 2-2 changeup over the wall in center in the third.
Key moment: With one on and one out in the seventh and the game tied at 1, Brewers manager Pat Murphy replaced the left-hander Ashby with right-hander Mears who walked the next two batters and then gave up Lopez's double.
Key stat: Christian Yelich's ninth-inning walk extended his on-base streak to 30 games tying a career high for the Brewers veteran.
Up next: Brewers left-hander Jose Quintana (7-3, 3.49 ERA) faces Marlins right-hander Janson Junk (4-2, 3.09) on Saturday. Junk who made five appearances for the Brewers last season will be facing Milwaukee for the first time in his career.

Tigers acquire Paddack from division rival Twins to plug rotation hole from Olson's injury
The AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers acquired starting pitcher Chris Paddack from the division rival Minnesota Twins in a three-player trade on Monday to plug another injury-created vacancy in their rotation. The Tigers announced right-hander Reese Olson will miss the remainder of the regular season with a strained shoulder suffered during his most recent bullpen session joining right-hander Jackson Jobe on the shelf. The Twins packaged Paddack and depth right-hander Randy Dobnak for catcher Enrique Jimenez who was the Tigers 14th-best prospect in MLB's preseason rankings. Paddack will make his debut for Detroit on Wednesday against Arizona. Dobnak was sent to Triple-A Toledo. The 29-year-old Paddack went 3-9 with a 4.95 ERA in 21 starts for the Twins this season with 27 walks and 83 strikeouts in 111 innings and a .266 opponent batting average. Acquired by Minnesota in a trade with San Diego right before the start of the 2022 season Paddack made five starts that year before suffering the second torn UCL of his career and needing Tommy John surgery. He returned for the 2023 postseason in a bullpen role and slotted back in the rotation in what was an up-and-down injury-affected 2024 season. Paddack went 10-14 with a 4.88 ERA over 45 appearances with Minnesota including 43 starts. The Tigers and Twins play seven more times this season including a three-game series in Detroit next week so he figures to face his former team soon. The Tigers have struggled to find a fifth starter since Jobe their top prospect and the third overall pick in the 2021 draft needed Tommy John surgery in late May. Keider Montero filled the role for most of the season but he has averaged fewer than five innings per appearance to put more pressure on an overloaded bullpen. Rookie Troy Melton who was to make his second career start on Monday is expected to move into a long-relief role for the Tigers who took an eight-game lead on Cleveland into the week. The 19-year-old Jimenez had a .779 OPS with 32 RBIs in 48 games for Detroit's rookie league club. The switch-hitter who was signed out of Venezuela in 2023 will add some catching depth to a Twins organization that was lacking it. The 30-year-old Dobnak is making 3 million this season but he has spent most of 2025 with Triple-A St. Paul like he has since signing a five-year major league contract with the Twins in 2021 that guaranteed him 9.25 million. He made the opening day roster and had one relief appearance before being sent down. Dobnak has a 4.86 ERA in 140 2/3 career innings since making his debut with the Twins in 2019.

Packers' Elgton Jenkins says he's OK with his position switch and believes he can thrive at center
GREEN BAY, Wis. – Elgton Jenkins says he doesn't expect the Green Bay Packers to alter his contract before the season to reflect his position switch, while adding that he's fine with the move from guard to center. 'Right now it's just (about) being the best player I can be, being the best teammate,' Jenkins said Monday. 'Like I said, man, I know what I'm going to do this season. I'm confident in my ability, very confident in it. So just going out there playing ball, keep doing what I've been doing, and it's going to take care of itself.' Jenkins, a two-time Pro Bowl guard, is moving to center after the Packers signed former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Aaron Banks to fill his old spot at left guard. Jenkins will take over for Josh Myers, who was Green Bay's starting center for the past three seasons before signing with the New York Jets in March. The 29-year-old Jenkins practiced on a limited basis Monday for the first time after dealing with a back issue the first few days of training camp. Jenkins said he had hurt his back while lifting weights earlier in the offseason. The back issue also had prevented Jenkins from participating in Green Bay's mandatory minicamp last month, though he was present for it. Jenkins did skip the Packers' organized team activities this offseason, but he said Monday that was because of family concerns rather than any issues over changing positions. 'I'm having changes in my family right now, so I wanted to spend more time with them,' Jenkins said. 'And it so happened that came up, so it was just like it was better for me to spend time with my family this offseason.' Jenkins said he had expressed a willingness to move when general manager Brian Gutekunst asked him about the possibility of switching positions. 'When he asked me the first time, I was like, 'Yeah, let me think on it,'' Jenkins said. 'I thought about it for a little while, and he called again, and I was like, 'Yeah, I'll do it.'' Jenkins acknowledged his representatives had spoken with Packers officials about how the position switch could impact his future earnings. Jennings has two years remaining on the four-year, $68 million contract extension he signed in December 2022. 'They had a conversation, and obviously the conversation was going on for a long period of time, but right now, where we're at is focusing on the being the best player I can be,' Jenkins said. 'Been playing this game for 20-some years, seven years in the league. I'm very confident in my ability and what I can do. The financial side, I know that's going to come. Right now, it's just how can we build chemistry within the O-line to get better and as an offense.' The Packers and Jenkins have reason to believe he can thrive as a center. Jenkins was at center for 26 of his 34 career starts during his college career at Mississippi State. While the 2019 second-round pick has primarily played left guard in the NFL, he also has started four games at center, eight at left tackle, and six at right tackle. His most recent start at center came in a 24-14 loss to the Detroit Lions on Nov. 3 of last season when Myers was out with a wrist injury. 'I feel like the sky's the limit, honestly,' Jenkins said. 'I can be an All-Pro, Pro Bowl, same guy–probably even better, honestly. We're just going to see.'

Brock purdy's latest milestone: A new addition to the 49ers' family
Brock Purdy became the latest San Francisco 49ers star to join the fatherhood club. Purdy's wife, Jenna, gave birth to the couple's first child, Millie Joleen Purdy. Purdy left the team late last week for his daughter's birth before returning to practice on Sunday. Jenna Purdy announced the news of the couple's new daughter on Monday on social media that included a picture of her and Brock holding Millie Joleen with the caption: 'Life just became a whole lot sweeter.' The Purdys' new arrival came nearly two weeks after star running back Christian McCaffrey and his wife, Olivia Culpo, had their first child, Colette Annalise McCaffrey. 'The guys have matured an incredible amount in the last couple days,' fullback Kyle Juszcyk said with a smile on Monday. 'They both have terrible dad jokes. They both got their dad strength overnight. Just so happy for both of them and their families. They're going to be incredible fathers. We're all just so excited for them.' The Purdys met when both were students at Iowa State and got married in March 2024. It's been an eventful year already for the family, with Brock Purdy signing a five-year, $265 million contract extension in May and the couple buying a new house for the offseason in Nashville, Tennessee. Padded practice: The Niners had their first padded practice of training camp with rookie defensive linemen Mykel Williams and C.J. West both faring well in one-on-one pass rushing drills. The start of pads brought an added energy to the session that was the longest yet of training camp for the 49ers. 'It was fun,' Juszczyk said. 'I really felt like I was craving it. I said to Christian a couple days ago, 'I'm really excited for some physicality.' It's been a long time. It was fun to go out there and be able to hit somebody.' Injury updates: Defensive end Tarron Jackson was released from the hospital after being taken off the field by a stretcher following a scary injury Sunday. Jackson was back at the facility and is still being evaluated for a neck injury. Receiver Jauan Jennings missed practice a day after leaving early with a calf injury. There is no word on the extent of the injury. Cornerback Renardo Green and receiver Jacob Cowing remain sidelined by hamstring injuries and DT Jordan Elliott also was out for undisclosed reasons. Cornerback Eli Apple took part in his first practice after being signed Sunday. Receiver Quintez Cephus was cut to make room.
