What Korean dramas can teach us about modern fatherhood

Seo In-ho (played by Kim Byung-chul) in Doctor Cha (2023) starts as a rather flawed husband and father, entangled in an affair and seemingly oblivious to his family's emotional needs. However, as the drama unfolds, he undergoes a significant, albeit often comedic, transformation. While his journey is messy and filled with missteps, he eventually confronts his shortcomings and genuinely attempts to be a more present and supportive father to his children. His evolution shows that fatherhood is also about the willingness to learn, adapt and strive for improvement, even when it's uncomfortable. He offers a relatable, if sometimes frustrating, portrayal of a dad trying to find his way back to his family.

Bong Gwi-ju (played by Jang Ki-yong) in The Atypical Family presents a unique take on fatherhood. A man with the ability to time travel, he loses his powers after his wife's death, succumbing to depression. His journey isn't just about regaining his abilities, but about rediscovering his purpose as a father to his daughter, Bok I-na. He is living proof of the quiet resilience of a father grappling with loss and mental health, demonstrating that true strength lies in confronting one's vulnerabilities for the sake of one's children. His efforts to connect with I-na and protect her, even in his weakened state, are truly poignant. The unexpected healer: Lee Jang-hyun in 'My Dearest'

While not a biological father, Lee Jang-hyun (played by Namkoong Min) in the historical epic My Dearest becomes a profound father figure in the tumultuous backdrop of Joseon. His enigmatic nature and deep-seated trauma initially make him seem unapproachable, but his quiet acts of protection and selfless sacrifice for those he cares for, especially the younger, more vulnerable characters caught in the ravages of war, solidify his place. He exemplifies a paternal bond forged not by blood, but by shared hardship and unwavering compassion. The steadfast sentinel: Jang Ju-won in 'Moving'

In the fantastical world of Moving , Jang Ju-won (played by Ryu Seung-ryong) stands out as a father whose superhuman healing abilities are matched only by his unwavering devotion to his daughter, Hui-soo. A former black ops agent, Ju-won is a man of few words but profound actions. He runs a fried chicken shop to provide for Hui-soo, always putting her safety and well-being above his own. When danger looms, he transforms into a formidable protector, facing down any threat to his child with raw strength and relentless determination. His journey is one of sacrifice and unconditional love, proving that some heroes wear aprons and carry the weight of the world for their children. The quietly supportive: Lee Ik-jun in 'Hospital Playlist'

Lee Ik-jun (played by Jo Jung-suk) in Hospital Playlist is a prime example of a modern, single father who excels at balancing a demanding career as a liver surgeon with devoted parenting. His relationship with his son, U-ju, is one of the most heartwarming aspects of the series. Ik-jun treats U-ju not just as a child, but as a trusted friend, engaging in playful banter, listening intently to his thoughts, and always making time for him despite his hectic schedule. Their daily video calls, filled with U-ju's adorable updates and Ik-jun's patient responses, paint a picture of a father who prioritises emotional connection and fosters an environment of open communication. He demonstrates that being a great dad isn't about grand gestures, but consistent presence and genuine affection. The unwavering protector: Sung Dong-il in 'Reply 1988'

Perhaps the quintessential K-drama dad, Sung Dong-il, playing a character bearing his own name, is the heart and soul of Reply 1988 . As the perpetually stressed but deeply loving father of three, he embodies the everyday struggles and profound joys of fatherhood in a working-class Seoul neighbourhood. His gruff exterior often masks a heart of gold, always ready with a witty retort or a surprisingly profound piece of advice. He may seem miserly, meticulously tracking every penny, but his sacrifices for his children are immense and often unspoken. His unwavering belief in his eldest daughter, Deok-sun, even when she doubts herself, is a testament to his profound paternal love. He's the sort of dad who might scold you for leaving the lights on but would secretly give you his last won for a treat.

Love Chinese food? Taste Paradise Dynasty's classic flavours in a brand new space
'There had been growing requests at our other branches asking, 'Why not open in the north?' So we finally did, and the reception has been remarkable.' - Jonathan Ko on why they brought Paradise Dynasty to the north - Tatler was offered servings of Paradise Dynasty's best and sought-after offerings. Among them was the Signature Dynasty xiao long bao, a selection of eight colourful flavours including original, Korean kimchi, foie gras, black truffle, cheese, crab roe, garlic and Szechuan. Ko explains that the restaurant places great importance on consistency, which is why the dish still carries the same familiar flavour Filipinos have loved since the first branch opened in Pasay in 2016. 'For our eight-flavour xiao long bao, we always use original ingredients. Even the colours are made entirely from scratch,' he stresses. 'Some people ask if we use food colouring. We don't. Everything is created in-house; we use special ingredients to extract the colours for each dumpling,' Ko adds, noting that there had previously been some doubts about the authenticity of their methods. 'People keep coming back to this dish because the flavour has stayed consistent. After nine years, it still tastes the same. We never cut corners, and that's exactly why our guests return.' Paradise Dynasty's standout offerings include the yam paste xiao long bao, a dumpling filled with smooth, earthy purée made from Taro. Then there's the black fungus in a peppercorn vinaigrette, made with wood ear mushrooms known for their pleasantly chewy texture. The sharp peppercorn dressing leaves a lingering finish that keeps you reaching for another bite. Another memorable bite was the poached pork in spicy garlic sauce: a bold, flavourful dish that enhances both the tender meat and the vegetables tucked within. For those looking for a subtle savoury taste, the stir-fried Australian lettuce will be a revelation. This simple yet satisfying dish might easily be overlooked, but with just the right touch of salt and crunch, it's the kind of bite you'd keep coming back for with a spoonful of piping hot rice to match or even just as enjoyable as a light snack. Not to be missed is the speciality fish in pickled vegetable broth, which Ko explains is simmered for two hours to allow the soup to draw out every layer of flavour. 'The soup is simmered for about two hours to develop its flavour and richness,' he says. What is Arden Cho's favourite soda flavour—and how did they nail those slurping noises in KPop Demon Hunters?
What is one meal you could eat everyday? Literally anything with rice! What is your favourite soda flavour? I don't drink a lot of soda, but maybe Coca-Cola. What is your go-to meal on set? When I am in Korea, I love eating kimbap on set, which is my favorite snack. In America, on Partner Track, I was very lucky—they were very accommodating and we had a lot of rice. What is your favourite rice dish? I really like nasi goreng! Either that or something with spice—kimchi fried rice, galbi, mapo tofu, or sausages with eggs and rice. Most unusual ingredient you've tried? I generally like everything. Maybe the one thing I don't like as much is Korean intestines. One restaurant you would go back to again and again? Jaeyeondo Sogeumppang, known for their salt bread, in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. In LA, right now, Kkondae, which serves one of the best grilled pork. And I love fried chicken at BBQ Chicken and Kyo Chon! After Rome and Paris, Emily in Paris 5 Will be Filming in Venice
The beloved TV series, which had debuted on Aug. 15 with the first part of the fourth season and on Sept. 16 with the Roman escape, reached, in its first four days alone, the first place of Netflix's global top 10, with 19.9 million views. Fans were certain of a confirmation, soon, of the new chapter of the show by Darren Star. Making the happy announcement was Lily Collins herself, who gives heart and soul to the bubbly Emily Cooper in Emily in Paris , on her Instagram profile. It was September 16, 2024, when, together with the entire cast, the actress was in Rome for the promotion of season number 4 shot precisely, for the finale, in the Italian capital. She had announced it with an espresso and a hubby in front of her, on the terrace of the Eden Hotel with a breathtaking view of our capital behind it. An early hint had come from Collins herself who, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon had revealed, "I'm so happy, we hadn't finished the story yet. We need more Rome, we need more Italy, we need more 'drama.'" GIULIA PARMIGIANI/NETFLIX Netflix has confirmed what we hoped for, that filming of Emily in Paris 5 will begin in Rome, then move to Paris. Plus a last-minute surprise: Emily will also fly to Venice, for an interlude Making the announcement was Luca Zaia, president of the Veneto region: from August 15 to 25 Netflix will film in the Serenissima. "This is extraordinary news, which confirms how our territory is increasingly attractive to large global audiovisual productions, thanks to its unique heritage and the teamwork between institutions and operators in the sector," he wrote on his Instagram profile. "It is a source of pride to see Veneto talents enhancing their land and bringing Veneto to millions of homes around the world. See you on set in our beautiful Venice."
