Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has called on Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the crescent moon on Tuesday evening that would signal the start of the Muslim lunar month Dhu Al Hijja ahead of the Hajj pilgrimage season. Tuesday is the 29th of Dhu Al Qadah and if the crescent moon is sighted that day, the month of Dhu Al Hijja, during which Hajj takes place, will start on Wednesday May 28. In this case, the first day of Eid Al Adha will take place on Friday June 6. If the crescent moon is not sighted on Tuesday evening, Dhu Al Hijja will start on Thursday and the first day of Eid will be on Saturday June 7. The court also urged anyone who sights the crescent moon with the naked eye or through binoculars to promptly report to the nearest court and submit their testimony. A total of 961,903 pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, the kingdom's General Directorate of Passports has announced. About 912,598 pilgrims entered through airports, 45,028 through land crossings, and 4,277 by sea, according to the directorate, and reported by Saudi Press Agency Spa. The directorate said it is committed to enabling smooth entry procedures by equipping all international entry points with advanced technology and posting highly trained, multilingual staff. The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, must be undertaken by all Muslims who have the means at least once in their lives. It is one of the world's largest religious gatherings. The kingdom had announced a range of penalties for people violating regulations during the event, one of the largest mass gatherings in the world. Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry said on Monday that security troops arrested five residents and nine citizens for violating Hajj regulations by transporting 44 individuals without Hajj permits. The ministry said that seasonal administrative committees issued decisions against the transporters, their accomplices and the unauthorised pilgrims, Spa reported. Penalties included imprisonment, fines of up to 100,000 riyals (26,666 US dollars), public naming of the violators and deportation of resident offenders with a 10-year re-entry ban to Saudi Arabia after serving their sentences, the ministry said The ministry also initiated judicial measures to confiscate the vehicles used in the offences and imposed a fine of up to 20,000 riyals on visitors who attempt to perform Hajj without a permit. The ministry urged all citizens and residents to comply with Hajj regulations to ensure a safe and secure Hajj for all. Preparations in full swing The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque has announced the readiness of the Mataf (circumambulation area) to receive pilgrims during this year's Hajj season, Spa reported. The authority confirmed that the Mataf area is now equipped to accommodate up to 107,000 circumambulatory per hour across several levels, including the ground floor, first floor, first mezzanine, second mezzanine and rooftop. The total worshipper capacity across all levels has reached 203,000. It further noted that the entire Mataf area has been dedicated exclusively for circumambulation, with several primary and secondary entrances allocated to enable access. Sheikh Saleh bin Humaid has been appointed preacher at this year's Hajj on the Day of Arafah (the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah), the Presidency of Religious Affairs announced. Mount Arafat is a granite hill about 20km from the Kaaba. Ascending it is the most important rite in the annual pilgrimage of Hajj for millions of Muslims. The Day of Arafah takes place on the second day of Hajj, when pilgrims make their way to Mount Arafat where the Prophet Mohammed gave his last sermon.

Oman: Dhofar gears up for khareef with 100 tourist sites, 7,300 rooms
SALALAH - Dhofar Governorate is gearing up for its signature tourism season with a marked increase in hospitality capacity, as the number of licensed establishments reaches 100, offering 7,300 rooms, the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism has confirmed. The expansion — driven by new hotel openings in Salalah, Taqah and Mirbat — is part of wider preparations for Khareef 2025, a key period for tourism in Oman. 'This capacity growth reflects our strategic focus on readiness and service excellence,' said Abdullah bin Omar al Sabbah Baaboud, Assistant Director of the Promotion Department in Dhofar. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, he noted, is working in tandem with stakeholders to upgrade tourism infrastructure and attract further investment into the hospitality sector. These efforts align with Oman Vision 2040, which positions tourism as a vital contributor to economic diversification and local development. According to official data, Dhofar welcomed 1.048 million visitors during the Khareef 2024 season, a 9 per cent year-on-year increase. Omani visitors surged by 70.1 per cent to over 734,500, while Gulf visitors rose 16.9 per cent, reaching nearly 177,000. Visitors from other Arab nations also posted a modest increase of 3.6 per cent. By end-2024, Dhofar had 83 licensed hotel properties offering 6,537 rooms. The additional supply — set to reach 100 hotels by summer 2025 — aims to meet rising demand and expand accommodation options for a diverse visitor base. The 2024 season also featured a significantly extended calendar of events, running for 90 consecutive days. Activities ranged from cultural showcases and family entertainment to sporting attractions such as the Salalah International Cycling Tour, drawing broad audience engagement across the governorate. The ministry implemented targeted marketing campaigns, participated in international travel exhibitions; and organised media and trade familiarisation trips. Social media outreach also intensified, partnering with regional influencers to reinforce Dhofar's profile as a leading monsoon destination. Officials expect further growth in visitor arrivals over the coming seasons, supported by continuous infrastructure upgrades and broader investment in tourism services. With Khareef tourism now a centrepiece of Dhofar's economic strategy, the governorate is on track to solidify its standing as a premier destination in the Arabian Peninsula. 2022 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Hamas military chief Sinwar's body found in tunnel under Gaza hospital
The Israeli army said on Sunday it had retrieved the body of Hamas' military chief Mohammed Sinwar in an underground tunnel beneath a hospital in southern Gaza, following a targeted operation last month. Another senior Hamas leader, Mohammad Shabana, commander of the Rafah Brigade, was also found dead at the scene along with a number of other militants, who are still being identified, said IDF spokesperson, Brigadier General Effie Defrin. Israeli forces gave a small group of foreign reporters a tour of the tunnel that had been uncovered beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, which Defrin said was a major command and control compound for Hamas. "This is another example of the cynical use by Hamas, using civilians as human shields, using civilian infrastructure, hospitals, again and again," said Defrin. "We found underneath the hospital, right under the emergency room, a compound of a few rooms. In one of them we found, we killed Mohammed Sinwar," he said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sinwar's death last month, but Defrin said they now had his DNA which proved beyond doubt it was him. Hamas has not commented on reports of the death of either Sinwar or Shabana. Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the Palestinian group's deceased leader and mastermind of the October 2023 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people according to Israeli tallies, and which triggered the brutal Israeli attacks in Gaza. Shabana was one of Hamas's most senior and battle-hardened commanders in southern Gaza. He played a central role in constructing the network of tunnels under the southern city of Rafah, which were used for ambushes and cross-border raids. Destruction The drive to Khan Younis in Israeli military vehicles showed widespread devastation, with countless buildings lying in ruins, and piles of rubble collected at the roadside. The Israeli military has raided or besieged numerous hospitals during the war, alleging that Hamas uses them to conceal fighters and orchestrate operations — a charge Hamas has repeatedly denied. While Israel has presented evidence in certain cases, some of its assertions remain unverified. Defrin said the army had carefully planned the strike near the European Hospital in order not to damage it. A large trench dug infront of the Emergency Room entrance led down to a hole in the claustrophobic, concrete tunnel, that was used as a hideaway by Hamas fighters, the army said. During the search of the site, Israeli forces recovered weapon stockpiles, ammunition, cash and documents that are now being reviewed for intelligence value. "We will dismantle Hamas because we cannot live with this terror organisation right in our backyard, right across our border," Defrin said. More than 54,000 Palestinians have died during the ongoing Israeli attacks, according to Gaza health authorities. The UN has warned that most of Gaza's 2.3 million population is at risk of famine.
