Chadian president holds emergency meeting after deadly incidents
Mahamat noted that the recent security incidents in Logone Occidental province, Ouaddai province and Salamat province are nothing more than a proven security and administrative failure.
The president criticised government officials for their incompetence, saying the situation was unacceptable.
"It's either you change the situation by properly ensuring the security of Chadians and their property throughout the country, or I will assume my responsibilities by appointing in your place men and women capable of reversing the trend," Mahamat was quoted by the statement as saying.
"The departments of security, territorial administration, and justice must do their job... with complete independence and impartiality," he added. "The disorder must stop."
Intercommunal clashes are common in Chad and are usually caused by disputes over land or political differences.

TMC leader slams Centre over PoJK, calls govt ‘anti-people'
Kolkata, Aug 20 (UNI) The Union government lacks the courage to reclaim Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir despite having the support of the Opposition parties and the entire nation, said Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee today. "The Union Government, despite having the support of the Opposition parties and the entire nation, still lacks the courage to reclaim PoJK. It beats its chest with hollow rhetoric, but when it comes to defending India's sovereignty, protecting our borders and acting firmly against our enemies, it shows no real resolve," Banerjee said on X. 'Instead of fulfilling its constitutional responsibility, this government (Centre) is solely interested in amassing power, wealth and control without any accountability,' he said. Banerjee said his party also strongly condemned the "authoritarian attitude" of the Centre and opposed the introduction of a draconian constitutional amendment Bill. 'The Government of India, instead of providing relief to the people and working for the genuine development of farmers, workers and the poor, has completely failed to uphold its duty of safeguarding the sovereignty of the nation,' he added. 'Having failed in its attempt to misuse the EC to implement SIR, the government has now activated another 'E' (ED) to bring in laws that target opposition leaders, crush democracy and manipulate the people's mandate by toppling state governments.' the Diamond Harbour MP said. He said the Centre has proven itself to be 'anti-people, anti-farmer, anti-poor, anti-SC, anti-ST, anti-OBC, anti federal and above all anti-India.' He also warned that every single vote to the BJP was nothing less than selling the soul of India. 'It is selling the constitution of our country and allowing India to be run as private property in the hands of incompetent obsessive tyrants,' Banerjee said. 'India built on the ideals of Gandhi and Ambedkar will not surrender its soul to dictators and power-hungry rulers,' the TMC leader concluded. UNI PC VAN SSP

IDF puts additional 60,000 reserves on alert for operation to fully take over Gaza City
Tel Aviv, Aug 20 (UNI) The Israeli Defence Forces have put over 60,000 reserve troops on alert for the total capture of Gaza City. This comes in the wake of Israel's plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip to remove the Hamas forces in the area. The military is set to launch its offensive against Hamas today in Gaza City, announced Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz. According to The Times Of Israel, the reserves would not be rolled out at once but rather in waves. The majority — around 40,000-50,000 — would be ordered to show up for duty on September 2. Another wave would take place in November-December, and a third wave in February-March 2026, the IDF said. This move markedly increases the number of reserves being called for action, as the IDF already has thousands of reserves currently serving. Additionally, the military is also extending reserve duty for some 20,000 reservists who were currently on duty by another 30-40 days. This would bring the total number of reservists at a given time during the offensive to around 130,000. These reserves include three brigades and several more battalions, and many combat support soldiers, including in intelligence and logistics. Not all reserves are going to deployed to Gaza City, but rather will fill in for the active ground troops deployed in various areas currently. In all, five IDF divisions, made up of tens of thousands of troops, were set to participate in the military's planned offensive against Hamas in Gaza City, according to the army. The forces included 12 brigade-level teams, each of which has infantry, armoured, artillery, and combat engineering forces, along with combat support. In addition, the Gaza Division's northern and southern brigades — normally tasked with the border — are set to participate in the offensive, bringing the total number of brigades to 14. As per the IDF, the preparation phases for its offensive have already begun, with an ongoing offensive on the outskirts of Gaza City. The Nahal Infantry Brigade and 7th Armoured Brigade have been operating in the Zeitoun neighbourhood, and the Givati Infantry Brigade began a new offensive in the Kafr Jabalia area, north of the city. In addition, the IDF said efforts to set up humanitarian infrastructure in the Strip's south for an estimated one million Palestinian civilians who are set to be displaced from Gaza City have started, including allowing tents and shelter equipment into the Strip in recent days. The military said more aid distribution sites and at least two more field hospitals are set to be established. The European Hospital in Khan Younis, which was closed after the IDF raided a Hamas tunnel running underneath it, was also slated to resume operations. UNI ANV SSP
