Tampa Bay Rays' Wander Franco found guilty in sex abuse case, receives 2-year suspended sentence
Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, left, reacts after hearing his sentence during his trial on charges of sexual abuse of a minor, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Thursday, June 26, 2025. (AP Photo/Fran Afonso) PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic — Wander Franco, the suspended Tampa Bay Rays shortstop charged in a sexual abuse case, was found guilty on Thursday but received a two-year suspended sentence. Franco was arrested last year after being accused of having a four-month relationship with a girl who was 14 at the time, and of transferring thousands of dollars to her mother to consent to the illegal relationship. Franco, now 24, also faced charges of sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking, but was found not guilty of those. Judge Jakayra Veras García said Franco made a bad decision as she addressed him during the ruling. 'Look at us, Wander,' she said. 'Do not approach minors for sexual purposes. If you don't like people very close to your age, you have to wait your time.' Prosecutors had requested a five-year prison sentence against Franco and a 10-year sentence against the girl's mother, who was found guilty and will serve the full term. 'Apparently she was the one who thought she was handling the bat in the big leagues,' Veras said of the mother and her request that Franco pay for her daughter's schooling and other expenses. Franco's attorney, Irina Ventura, said she would appeal the judge's ruling: 'Evidently, justice was not done.' Meanwhile, prosecutor Luis Martínez said he was pleased with the rulings but did not say whether the government would appeal. Before the three judges issued their unanimous ruling, Veras orally reviewed the copious amount of evidence that prosecutors presented during trial, including certain testimony from 31 witnesses. 'This is a somewhat complex process,' Veras said. More than an hour into her presentation, Veras said: 'The court has understood that this minor was manipulated.' As the judge continued her review, Franco looked ahead expressionless, leaning forward at times. Franco, who was once the team's star shortstop, had signed a $182 million, 11-year contract through 2032 in November 2021 but saw his career abruptly halted in August 2023 after authorities in the Dominican Republic announced they were investigating him for an alleged relationship with a minor. Franco was 22 at the time. In January 2024, authorities arrested Franco in the Dominican Republic. Six months later, Tampa Bay placed him on the restricted list, which cut off the pay he had been receiving while on administrative leave. He was placed on that list because he has not been able to report to the team and would need a new U.S. visa to do so. While Franco awaited trial on conditional release, he was arrested again in November last year following what Dominican authorities called an altercation over a woman's attention. He was charged with illegally carrying a semiautomatic Glock 19 that police said was registered to his uncle. That case is still pending in court. After the ruling, Major League Baseball issued a brief statement noting it had collectively bargained a joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy 'that reflects our commitment to these issues.' 'We are aware of today's verdict in the Wander Franco trial and will conclude our investigation at the appropriate time,' MLB said. Vancouver Giants' new GM and coach have old ties to team
Hnat Domenichelli takes over with player personnel decisions for the WHL club, while Parker Burgess is running the bench now Get the latest from Steve Ewen straight to your inbox The Vancouver Giants announced the hiring of Hnat Domenichelli as the club's new General Manager on June 26, 2025 at Patt Quinn's Restaurant & Bar at Tsawwassen Springs. Photo by Marusca Rezzonico/freshfocus / Marusca Rezzonico/freshfocus Hnat Domenichelli and Parker Burgess were introduced as the new general manager and head coach of the Vancouver Giants on Thursday and both come with built-in connections to the club. Domenichelli, 49, takes over player personnel from Barclay Parneta, who parted ways with the team in late April. Burgess, 40, is running the bench in place of Manny Viveiros, who left the team in mid-May for a spot with Red Bull Salzburg, a pro team in Austria. Domenichelli's ties with the Giants are the most obvious. They include the fact that the Edmonton native, who is is coming off a six-year run as general manager of Swiss pro team HC Lugano, worked as player agent for a time with the Sports Corporation, the Edmonton-based company that's represented countless Giants over the years and now features former Giants GM Scott Bonner among its leadership group. Giants all-time leading scorer Brendan Gallagher, who's 13 years into his NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens, is a Sports Corporation client. The same goes for Cameron Schmidt, the current Giants sharpshooter who's expected to be a high pick in this weekend's NHL Draft. The Giants, as it happens, also took Domenichelli's son Leonardo, 19, with a seventh-round selection in May's WHL Draft. He's a 5-foot-9, 168-pound forward who played last year in an Under-20 league in Switzerland. Hnat is a former WHL star with the Kamloops Blazers who saw action in 267 NHL games before finishing his playing career in Europe. The Vancouver Giants announced the hiring of Parker Burgess as the team's new head coach on June 26. @ photo The link for Burgess to the Giants isn't quite so direct. The Calgary product guided the Muskegon Lumberjacks to the USHL title last season. That team's roster featured defenceman Bauer Berry. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. He's the son of former University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks coach Brad Berry — who played minor pro with former Giants assistant coach and assistant GM Craig Bonner — and is someone the Giants brass have openly bounced ideas off of over the years. It's a safe bet they've done that again here. He was fired by North Dakota in March after 10 seasons there. He has another year on his contract, so he's not likely to jump back into coaching just yet. On Thursday, Burgess listed Brad as a mentor, and also confirmed that the Giants have added Bauer to their protected list. The 6-foot-4, 198-pound left-shot rearguard, who was a 2024 seventh-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers, is going into his 20-year-old season and has committed to the University of St. Thomas. Burgess cautioned Thursday that Bauer may go that route instead of coming to Vancouver. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. A WHL team having a GM hire the head coach is a more standard operating procedure, but Giants owner Ron Toigo said Thursday Burgess and Domenichelli were kept in the loop about who was in line for the other job. Domenichelli says, too, that he has heard plenty about Burgess through the grapevine the past few years. Burgess spent three seasons with the Lumberjacks: two and a half years as head coach and 20 games as the associate coach. He guided the squad to a 92-62-7-5 (.565) regular season record and a 14-6-2 (.636) post-season record. 'He's an up-and-coming coach. He's trending toward positive things and we're very lucky to have him in Vancouver,' Domenichelli said. 'He's a very good communicator and that's what you need today.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Next up for Domenichelli and Burgess is to see what happens for the likes of Schmidt and goalie Burke Hood at the NHL Draft. Another name to watch for this weekend from a Giants standpoint is Mason West, a Minnesota high school forward projected to go in the second round who was added to the Giants protected list last season. The 6-foot-6, 218-pound West is also a star high school quarterback and has said that he plans to play the prep gridiron season before focusing on hockey. He's slated to join the USHL's Fargo Force once he's done with the pigskin pursuits. Domenichelli played coy Thursday when asked if the Giants would try to change his mind to come to the WHL. Parneta visited West in Minnesota back in February, so the franchise has pitched him on coming previously. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'It's Day 1. We're going to keep some secrets,' Domenichelli said. And, outside of Bauer Berry, Burgess wasn't keen on saying whether there'd be other players from Muskegon looking to join the ranks. 'I don't know if I want to speculate on that one. I just got up here. I'm trying to get a feel of the current roster and then we'll see,' Burgess said. Burgess wants an 'enthusiastic, passionate team,' and one that 'fans can appreciate and come to the rink knowing that they're competing.' Vancouver (34-26-8-0) finished sixth in the Western Conference last season and lost in five games in the first round to the Spokane Chiefs. It was the third straight first-round loss for the club. It was the second season for Viveiros and the seventh for Parneta. @SteveEwen SEwen@
