Tiruvannamalai mom's suicide over girl baby: Postmortem confirms foetus was male
Health officials at the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College and Hospital on Friday confirmed the findings after the autopsy.
According to police sources, Umadevi and her husband had travelled to Tirupati on Monday to undergo an illegal scan to determine the sex of the foetus. The scan allegedly revealed the foetus to be female. Following this, her husband's family allegedly tried to coerce her into undergoing an abortion.
When Umadevi resisted, an altercation ensued during which she was allegedly assaulted. Hours later, both Umadevi and her daughter were found dead in a well near their home in Kilpennathur. Police had arrested four people, including Umadevi's husband and in-laws, on Wednesday under Sections 296 (b), 85 and 108 of the BNS, and Section 4 (b) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998.
Responding to queries on whether the postmortem confirmation would lead to changes in the charges, a senior police officer told TNIE, 'There is no need to alter the sections. Regardless of whether the foetus was male or female, sex determination itself is illegal. The offence remains the same under the law.'

Showroom owner held after four staffers die in west Delhi fire, families allege cover-up
A day after four staffers died in a fire at an electronics showroom in west Delhi's Raja Garden, police on Tuesday arrested the owner, Manas Mahajan, for alleged negligence that led to five people being trapped on the second floor of the building. Mahajan owns Mahajan Electronics and its other branches across Delhi. He has just been booked under BNS 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire) and 106 (negligence leading to death), police said, adding that he has not yet been produced before a magistrate. Officials said that the building did not have a fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC) as mandated under Delhi fire safety norms. The fire broke out around 3pm on Monday on the first floor of the four-storey showroom, which was stacked with fridges, washing machines and other appliances. The victims were identified as Aayushi Gupta, 21; Payal Singh, 20; Amandeep Kaur, 22; Ravi Kumar, 28; and Sandeep, 25, police said. They were on the second floor having lunch when they got trapped. Police said there was no fire extinguishing equipment on the second floor. Officials from the Delhi Fire Services added that the building did not have a fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC) as mandated under Delhi fire safety norms. A senior police officer probing the case said the victims were seated in a narrow corridor when the fire began. 'When the fire broke out, they tried to rush downstairs, but there was only one exit, and it was blocked due to heavy smoke. The employees then rushed upstairs and tried to reach the terrace, but the door to the terrace was locked. Further, there were no windows on the entire floor. They tried to get help, but it got too late. We spoke to doctors who said the four persons who died suffered due to suffocation,' the officer said. The Delhi Fire Services confirmed the challenges during the rescue, noting that the building had only one entry point. 'We had to drill a hole in the building to reach the victims,' an official said, adding that the second floor was stacked with appliances and boxes, leaving no space to move. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, police said. DCP (West) Vichitra Veer confirmed Mahajan's arrest and said proceedings have been initiated against him. HT reached out to store staff and the owner, but staffers declined to comment, while the owner's family did not respond to calls. Meanwhile, families of the deceased alleged that the showroom staff misled them after the incident. Vandana Singh, sister of Payal Singh, said her 20-year-old sister had been the sole breadwinner since their father's death. 'She started working two months back. Had we known it was an unsafe place, we would have never sent her. I got a call around 6pm, hours after the incident took place. Two employees told me she was injured in a small accident... I finally found out about her death from the police. My mother kept praying for her survival. She is traumatised. What will we do now? Who will support us?' she said. Aayushi Gupta's family also levelled similar allegations. Her brother, Saurabh Gupta, told HT, 'She was only 21 years old. She worked in the accounting and sales department. We received a call around 6.30 pm about the incident. We were not told about the fire or her death. I went to the hospital and found that the company people had already identified her at the hospital, and the body was sent to the mortuary... We waited the entire night and saw her body on Tuesday… a day later. Staffers kept misleading us and told us that she got injured. If she had died, why didn't they tell us? They wanted to get her married, and she had joined the job to start saving for her wedding. The owner and senior management never came to talk to us.'

Lawyer gets life sentence for misusing SC/ST Act to file fake cases against rivals
Lucknow: Special Judge (SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act) Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi on Tuesday sentenced advocate Parmanand Gupta to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs5.1 lakh for orchestrating a series of false cases by misusing the provisions of the SC/ST Act through a Dalit woman. The court convicted Gupta under sections of BNS 248 (making a false charge of an offence with the intent to injure someone), 217 (providing false information to a public servant with the intent to cause them to misuse their lawful power to the injury or annoyance of another person), and under section 3(2)(5) SC/ST Act. The court acquitted the co-accused woman (name withheld), warning her that any future misuse of SC/ST provisions to file false gang rape cases would invite strict legal action. She was released on bail bonds of Rs 20,000 with sureties. Special public prosecutor Arvind Mishra said that Gupta conspired with the woman from a scheduled caste to file dozens of fabricated cases, primarily targeting his adversaries. Records revealed that Gupta himself filed 18 false cases, while the woman lodged 11 more, many involving grave allegations such as rape and molestation. Investigations later exposed the cases as malicious attempts to harass and jail his opponents, said Mishra. Delivering the verdict, Special Judge (SC/ST Act) Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi said, "Just as a few drops of sour liquid can spoil an entire ocean of milk, allowing people like advocate Parmanand Gupta to misuse the law will damage the credibility of the judiciary." The special judge reiterated that strict punishment for offenders like Gupta was essential to uphold public faith in the judiciary. "The probe revealed that Gupta's wife was embroiled in a property dispute with the accused family and exploited the complainant woman's SC status to file multiple cases of rape and harassment against his adversaries," said Singh. Upon receiving Singh's report, the special court framed charges against both accused. 'Use AI to track repeated false cases' The court of special judge has ordered that a copy of the verdict be sent to the Bar Council of India and Bar Council of UP to ensure that convicts like advocate Parmanand Gupta are debarred from court premises and practice to maintain the sanctity of the profession. The Lucknow police commissioner was instructed to ensure that in future, whenever repeated FIRs of rape, gang rape, or misuse of SC/ST provisions are filed by the same complainant or family, it must be recorded in the FIR and investigation records. The court suggested using AI-based tools to track patterns of repeated false complaints.

25-year-old man from Loni arrested killing wife over suspicion of infidelity
Ghaziabad: A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife in Loni on Tuesday. He murdered his wife over suspicion of her being in an illicit relationship. The accused, Sumit Gupta was living in the Ankur Vihar area on rent. "On Monday night, an argument broke out between the couple. The dispute escalated quickly, and in a fit of rage, he grabbed a knife from the kitchen and slit his wife Kavita's throat. On hearing screams, a neighbour rushed to the scene, where he found her lying on the floor in a pool of blood.
