UAE University Games on right track with AI
24 Apr 2025 01:11
Kuumar Shyam (Abu Dhabi)The UAE University Games, initiated by the Ministry of Sports, proved not just a much-needed platform for the youth of the country, but showed that the administrators are looking to stay ahead of the curve in the technology game.Organised by Abu Dhabi Entertainment Company (ADEC), in cooperation with the UAE School and University Sports Federation, the inaugural season drew a total of 1,585 students from 28 universities across the UAE in, competing in seven sporting disciplines. The top achievers may have gone home with medals and trophies, but the real success was achieved by the organisers, who created a platform where talented athletes can develop and showcase their talents, gain exposure and further their careers.True to the UAE's innovative way of doing things, multiple agencies and consultants had been enlisted to generate performance-related data for the participants, which will help in analysing the various metrics and even help scouts from around the world assess the talent available. One of the agencies is PlayerMaker, which issued tracker chips to the participants in the crucial stages of the competition, except in the football, which was handled by another contracted company."We have worked in international organisations like FIFA, NBA and even closer here to the UAE with Dubai Sports Council, Al Nasr, etc," said Steve Barratt, Vice President of Sport Performance at PlayerMaker, as he collected the bands with the data chips from the youth players.
One band can cost between Dh2,500 to Dh5,000 dirhams, Barratt told Aletihad . In addition, there were artificial intelligence-enabled cameras tracking the action, which, supplemented by the movement data, can help coaches and technical analysts assess performance, while providing talent scouts with valuable data, said Barratt."We as a company collect data on footwork movement, including speed of acceleration and deceleration, direction changes, foot adjustment in response to game scenarios and utilisation of AI cameras to gather technical and session-based statistics."The data collected will help coaches analyse player weaknesses and enhance performance. Thus we cover three very important bases – technical, tactical and physical. Two staff members have specially flown in for this project to help us."Additional scouts from the UK and Europe are involved in observing games and providing insights. Plans are to bring in 12 more scouts for talent profiling across various sports in the next stage."With the combination of physical data collection, video analysis and scout observations completing the process, agencies such as PlayerMaker, says Barratt, will be able to collate the data into reports which the Ministry of Sports can then use."So we have a human resource, computer resource, AI resource. And AI is not just limited to cameras; it's in other fields as well, other domains. The insights that we are providing, you can get that on any grassroot-level player but also you can have it on Champions League players, World Cup winners, Ballon d'Or winners. We have it across the spectrum and work with many national governing bodies," he added.American University of Dubai's basketball coach Issam Termanini was oblivious to the gadgets strapped to his players' shoelaces during the final against University of Sharjah."I have no idea what these are supposed to do [the gadgets were used only for the knockout stages]. We barely had time to prepare because the team travelled to Greece to play in a tournament three weeks ago and now got this great platform to play college basketball for their own university," Termanini said. The UoS team took the lead in the first quarter and Termanini made a strategic switch to get his players to first neutralise the threat of Sharjah's key players before going on to win the title, just as they did in Greece.
In addition to the silverware won, the data compiled during the Games will go a long way to launching the international careers of the young players.

UAE Launches National Service Athlete Programme to Support Elite Sports Talent
The UAE has launched the National Service Athlete Programme, a new initiative that allows elite Emirati athletes to continue training and competing while fulfilling their national service obligations. Unveiled at a special event organised by the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Defence, the programme aims to integrate top athletes into structured training during their service and enable participation in key competitions that impact international rankings and Olympic qualifications. The first cohort includes athletes preparing for major events such as the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar 2026 and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Participants span a wide range of disciplines, including athletics, fencing, equestrian, archery, and combat sports. The programme reflects a broader national strategy to empower youth, strengthen physical readiness, and align sports development with the UAE's vision for the future. It also supports the goals of the National Sports Strategy 2031 and the wider 'We the UAE 2031' agenda. Officials said the initiative will help identify new talent, promote discipline through sport, and prepare a generation of well-rounded Emiratis capable of representing the country on the global stage. A joint committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Defence, and other stakeholders will oversee the implementation, including athlete assessments, tournament participation, and collaborative workshops focused on coaching and fitness development. UAE Football Clubs Back FA Penalties on Khalid Al Dhanhani and Sultan Adil
Arabian Post Staff -Dubai The UAE Football Association has imposed substantial sanctions on Sharjah FC's Khalid Al Dhanhani and Shabab Al Ahli's Sultan Adil, levying fines of Dh500,000 each and domestic bans spanning five matches. Both clubs have expressed full support for the association's decision and announced plans to initiate internal reviews into the conduct of the players involved. The disciplinary measures follow an investigation into conduct deemed inappropriate during recent fixtures in the UAE Pro League. The Football Association's decision signals a firm stance on maintaining discipline and sportsmanship standards in the country's top-tier football competitions. Sharjah and Shabab Al Ahli, two of the UAE's most prominent clubs, have publicly committed to cooperation with the governing body's directives and have vowed to undertake rigorous internal probes aimed at preventing future breaches. ADVERTISEMENT Officials from Sharjah FC described the imposed sanctions as 'just and necessary,' underscoring the club's zero-tolerance policy towards behaviour that undermines the integrity of the sport. Similarly, Shabab Al Ahli representatives reiterated their support for the Football Association's rulings, stressing the importance of upholding the reputation of UAE football on domestic and regional stages. The cases against Al Dhanhani and Adil reportedly involved incidents that breached the association's code of conduct, though specific details about the nature of the violations have been withheld from public disclosure to protect all parties involved. Observers note that the magnitude of the fines and bans reflects the association's increased commitment to enforcing discipline and deterring misconduct in a league that continues to grow in regional prominence. This move aligns with broader efforts by the UAE Football Association to professionalise the sport locally and align with international standards of governance and fairness. The recent enforcement of hefty penalties on high-profile players sends a message to the football community that violations, irrespective of player status, will attract stringent consequences. Inside the clubs, internal investigations are expected to scrutinise not only the incidents leading to the penalties but also the systemic factors that may have contributed to the lapses in conduct. Sharjah and Shabab Al Ahli's initiatives aim to reinforce codes of behaviour, improve player education regarding sportsmanship, and implement monitoring mechanisms to prevent recurrence. The UAE Pro League, which features many international talents alongside local stars, has seen increased scrutiny over player behaviour and match officiating standards in recent seasons. The Football Association's disciplinary committee has stepped up its vigilance to safeguard the league's competitive integrity and enhance its appeal to sponsors and fans alike. ADVERTISEMENT Football experts within the region have welcomed the decisive action taken by the association, noting that maintaining discipline is crucial as UAE clubs seek to compete more effectively in continental competitions such as the AFC Champions League. The implementation of fair play principles is viewed as integral to sustaining the sport's development and nurturing young talent under professional frameworks. While the penalties levied are severe, they also serve as an opportunity for the players to reflect on their professional conduct and align with the expectations set by their clubs and governing bodies. Both Al Dhanhani and Adil remain key figures within their teams, and their return following suspension will likely come with an emphasis on exemplary behaviour. The financial fines represent a significant deterrent, especially in a league where clubs are increasingly investing in player welfare and development. The sanctions highlight the balance sought between disciplinary action and the need to foster a positive competitive environment that encourages respect among players, coaches, and officials. The Football Association's handling of this matter has been consistent with international best practices, reflecting a growing maturity in sports governance within the UAE. Clubs across the league are anticipated to reinforce internal policies and promote awareness to ensure alignment with the standards enforced by the governing body. The disciplinary episode involving Al Dhanhani and Adil has also drawn attention to the broader cultural and professional expectations within UAE football, emphasising accountability and ethical behaviour as non-negotiable elements of athlete performance. As clubs prepare for the next stages of the season, the message from the association and participating teams is clear: professionalism and discipline will be upheld at all costs.
