What is their party position? Shashi Tharoor on snub by Kerala Congress

India Today22-07-2025
MP Shashi Tharoor said there was no basis to the charges by a section of Congress leaders over his stance on the national security issue, asserting that he was "not at all" worried about his future with the party.Speaking to the media outside Parliament, Tharoor attempted to play down the apparent tensions with the Congress leadership even as he took a swipe at the party's Kerala unit.advertisementWhen asked about Kerala Congress leader K Muraleedharan's remark that he would not be invited to any party event in the state, a visibly unfazed Tharoor gave a cryptic response.
"The people who are saying this should have some basis for saying so. Who are they? What is their party position? I want to know. Then we will see. Don't ask me about the behaviour of others. I can talk about my behaviour," the four-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram said. When asked if he was worried about the developments, Tharoor replied promptly, "Not at all".SHASHI THAROOR'S 'LOYALTY' REMARKSince the beginning of the year, Tharoor has stirred the Congress brass with his praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and public endorsements of the government's policies. The political spat escalated on Sunday after Muraleedharan said Tharoor, despite being a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), was "no longer one of us"."Till he (Tharoor) changes his stance, we will not invite him to any party programme held in Thiruvananthapuram. He is not with us, so there is no question of him boycotting an event," Muraleedharan told reporters.Muraleedharan's response came after Tharoor said at an event in Kochi that the nation always came first and parties were the means of making the country better. The Congress MP also shared a video of his response to the "inevitable question" about his alleged rift with the party."Which is your first loyalty? To my mind, the nation comes first. Parties are a means of making the nation better," he said.Simmering for months now, the friction between Tharoor and the Congress became more pronounced after the Kerala MP accepted the Centre's invitation to lead an all-party delegation to garner support for Operation Sindoor.Days later, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge publicly chided Tharoor without naming him, saying, "For the Congress, it is country first, but for some people, it is Modi first."- EndsMust Watch

India cannot remain ‘mute spectator' as institutions like WTO are destroyed by Trump: Congress

The Congress on Friday said that India 'cannot remain a mute spectator and be content with coining slogans and acronyms,' while the Donald Trump-led United States administration destroys international institutions like the World Trade Organization. 'The rules-based, multilateral trading system put in place with the US itself playing a leadership role has been finished off,' Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. 'The US's approach now is to negotiate – if at all – bilaterally but finally decide unilaterally.' He further accused Trump of gutting the World Health Organization and highlighted that the US under Trump has withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. 'India has the highest stakes in such international accords and institutions,' Ramesh asserted. The WTO had been dealt very heavy blows during Trump-I. It has been destroyed during Trump-II. The rules-based, multilateral trading system put in place with the US itself playing a leadership role has been finished off. The US's approach now is to negotiate--if at… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 1, 2025 Ramesh's comments on Friday came after Trump signed an executive order reimposing so-called reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries that have not negotiated separate trade agreements with it, including India. On Wednesday, Trump announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from India. He added that India will also have to pay an unspecified ' penalty ' for buying a large portion of its military equipment and fuel from Russia amid the war on Ukraine. While Friday was the deadline for the tariffs, they will come into effect only from August 7. On Thursday, Trump said that he does not care about 'what India does with Russia' and that 'they can take their dead economies down together, for all I care'. 'We have done very little business with India, their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world,' Trump said on social media. 'Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together.' The tariffs have led to concerns of a broader trade war that could disrupt the global economy and trigger recession. The World Trade Organization was established in 1995 with the aim to reduce barriers to global trade and encourage a sustainable model of development. It sets rules for global trade and arbitrates disputes when countries contend that the rules are not being followed. However, since Trump announced his tariffs, critics have questioned the effectiveness of the Geneva-based organisation in regulating international trade.
